Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday apartment in Fayetteville - Lafayette Flats - Quinnimont

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Lots of Luxury

Quinnimont has lofty rooms and the decor is contemporary, comfortable and luxurious. You can enjoy a long soak in the fabulous tub or a refreshing shower under the rain drop showerhead. The beautiful view of the historic courthouse might distract you from the LED HD televisions, but you are sure to sleep well on the high quality sheets and Tempurpedic mattress.

You will be treated to a wide variety of local original art, both in the private living space and the common spaces. You are also invited to learn about the local area by exploring Lafayette Flats' library of books about West Virginia or those written by authors from WV.

Located on the main street of Fayetteville's historic district, Lafayette Flats is an easy stroll from locally owned and operated restaurants and shops. Hikers, bikers, climbers and whitewater enthusiasts are minutes away from their activities as well.

Lafayette Flats is located on the upper two floors of a historic 100 year old cut stone building. The interior of the building has been lovingly renovated with new electrical, plumbing and heating/cooling systems but retains much of the original architectural details throughout.

About Amy McLaughlin

I'm Amy and my husband's name is Shawn. We were both born and raised in Charleston, WV, where we still live and we both work for the same non-profit organization. Charleston is only about one hour from Fayetteville, so lucky for us, the best vacation spot in West Virginia is close by.

Lafayette Flats began with our simple desire to get out of town. We love our home in Charleston's East End but we really like to travel. We found out early in our relationship that we travel together well and we love to do it as often as we can. We love taking weekend driving trips to places like Asheville, Columbus, Charlotte and Louisville, and we've been all over our home state of West Virginia. Two years ago we drove across the country on Route 66 and last fall we toured Northern California - Yosemite, Redwoods, Wine Country - we loved it all. But big trips are few and far between, so we satisfy our travelin' Jones by making the drive up to Fayetteville as often as we can. Maybe it's the Bacon Jam at The Secret Sandwich Society or the breathtaking views from Long Point Trail, but something keeps us coming back again and again.

We looked for a small apartment in Fayetteville that we could rent, just to have a home base where we could escape to on weekends but found nothing suitable. After months of searching we decided to take on a project where we could build our own space. We looked a several opportunities, but the one that caught our eye was the historic building on the corner of Court Street and Wiseman Avenue - known as 'The Malcolm Building.' This building was built in 1906 to house The Bank of Fayette and is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Fayetteville's Historic District.

Our home in Charleston is in a 100 year-old townhouse community, so I guess it's safe to say that we are drawn to old buildings.

We spent the summer and fall of 2013 renovating the building - doing much of the work ourselves. We are eager to show off our space!

Why Amy McLaughlin chose West Virginia

Our love for Fayetteville and the New River Gorge area caused us to something we had never done before: We bought and renovated this historic cut stone building, transforming the top two floors into four apartment style vacation rentals. Quinnimont is one of four flats in the building, and the one that we call our second home.

Since it is on the Historic Registry, we were very intentional in our renovation plan to leave the building intact as much as possible. Originally built to be an office building, each floor only had one common bathroom and the heating in the building was hot water radiators. Since it was built before electricity, the electrical system was hodgepodge of makeshift circuits and ancient fuse boxes. Along with theses negatives, though, were a lot of positives: The beautiful original woodwork is still there and the fortress-like construction means that the building is very sturdy. The beautiful cut-stone exterior looks exactly like it did when it was built a century ago.

Our renovation plans preserved the woodwork and the basic configuration of the building. Installing a new electrical system and the plumbing necessary to support two additional bathrooms and kitchens was done in such a way as not to change the character of the building. Fire codes made us make some alterations to doorways, but overall the building looks as it has for the last century.

But in spite of the ancient spaces of this small town former bank building, the interior design is chic, modern and urban. We want to offer visitors to Fayetteville something completely different from the campsites, cabins and large vacation home rentals available in the area. Furnished with all the comforts of home and decorated to the nines with local original art and many unique design elements, this is not your typical vacation rental! We want you to more than just feel at home - we want you to wish that you lived here!

What makes this apartment unique

Most lodging in the New River Gorge area is campsites, cabins or oversized vacation homes in remote settings. Lafayette Flats offers a small town main street lodging experience with walkable access to unique locally owned restaurants, shops and activities.

The decor, with an emphasis on local original art, provides visitors with a rich cultural experience. Travelers interested in history will enjoy staying in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the stunning view of the Fayette County Courthouse.

Even though Lafayette Flats sits on main street downtown, it still is walking distance from National Park trail heads and all of the outdoor adventure that the New River Gorge provides.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just wanted to touch base with you and tell you how wonderful our stay was. I have to tell you, we have rented apartments/houses all over the world for the last 15 years. My husband and I agreed that your apartments were the most beautiful we have ever stayed in. The apartments are like little works of art. Everything is perfect.

Fantastic location, beautiful reno of historic building

  • 5 of 5

The Flats are 1 minute from the main thoroughfare of Route 19, and walk-able to everything in downtown Fayetteville. We were in town for a weekend of rafting the Gauley and zip lining, and were a 10 minute drive to those attractions as well. The location was absolutely perfect for everything we wanted to do. The renovation Amy completed within this historic building is gorgeous, stylish, and modern. This was a perfect couple's retreat!

Lafayette is the place to stay in Fayetteville

  • 5 of 5

Location is perfect. Our unit was clean, comfortable, and private. The great stuff was the unit was decorated with very cool art, everything was high end, and anything you could want was there. Unique fun art was throughout the building including a wire wound man sculpture repelling down the refrigerator. My wife loved the tub with the supplied salts and lavender.

Amy communicated very well with us and made our visit stress free. Can't wait to return.

Since this is a review, I will objectively mention only 2 minor items that would not keep us from returning.

1. parking is tight. A huge open lot that can't be used for fear of towing, only 3 small spaces. When we got there, a truck with trailer was blocking the spaces so I parked a few blocks away with about 20 tow away spaces wide open in the lot.

2. The mattress is one of the most firm we have ever been on to the extent of uncomfortable. The report of Tempurpedic being a hot mattress is true. Turn the air down because you will be hot to the point of sweating a few hours after going to bed. We travel a lot and are not picky or big people, but a good night sleep was not in the cards for us our 2 nights. My wife transferred to the couch our last night.

Such a lovely stay

  • 5 of 5

I was given the opportunity to stay in the Quinnimont while I installed a piece of art in the flat. This was easily one of the best experiences as I got to stay in such a lovely flat, and in a matter of steps be out in Fayetteville exploring the town with the option of going on any adventure. The flats themselves were beautiful, comfortable, and were designed with contemporary West Virginia in mind. The hospitality of Amy and Shawn has gone without measure. I will definitely be back for another stay soon.

Stunning & Perfect

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed in the Quinnimont for her birthday weekend and the flat could not have been more perfect. Amy even left us a bottle of Prosecco to celebrate. In addition to the flat being well kept and designed, it's conveniently located for walking to restaurants in Fayetteville. We spent the weekend hiking and caving, and it was such a treat to return back each night to this stunning apartment and tempurpedic mattress. At the end of an exhausting day, the Lafayette Flats are the perfect place to relax.

Great Stay and Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over the Fourth of July weekend and had a great time despite the recent flooding. This was our second trip to Fayetteville, WV and we will certainly be back to stay at the Flats. You can tell the attention to detail that went into the flats and they've certainly thought of everything. From the bath salts, to the well appointed kitchen, to the local artwork and books. Amy went above and beyond, providing a list of holiday activities and even a list of closures due to the storm. The Flats are absolutely our first choice in Fayetteville and we can't wait to come back.

It is one of our goals to introduce Lafayette Flats visitors to a new way to think about West Virginia. We want to surprise our guests with the real West Virginia and nothing will make us happier than if they walk away with an impression that is different from the prejudices they might have held when they arrived. We have tried to do this through the design, art and literature of each flat. We think that Fayetteville itself helps to illustrate this new narrative. Here is a place that through the years has attracted the attention of many people with its amazing beauty and rich supply of natural resources. But instead of repeating our state's history, where those resources are scooped up and taken away on a train, the New River Gorge has been able to remain beautifully intact and now welcomes people to come here to enjoy it.
