About Cy Barton/Tom Barton

We finished construction on the home in 2005 and is primarily used by our family from Charleston, WV.

Cy Barton/Tom Barton purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Cy Barton/Tom Barton chose West Virginia

Location, location, location! We chose this property because Northlake Resort has so much more to offer than just skiing and is truly a multi-seasonal destination. In fact, the winter season (180 inches of snow annually) is awesome but where we really excel are the summer and fall months because all guests have access to our lake and other common areas located within our 80 acres.

Great house. Great location.

  • 5 of 5

Close to beautiful state parks and a very nice national wildlife refuge. A couple of excellent brewpubs nearby that provided nice fills for the growlers. Great show on the last night in Thomas at the Purple Fiddle by the Steel Wheels.

Everything in the house worked. The kitchen was fine. The living room areas (loft, main floor, basement) were very comfortable and conducive to hanging out.

Fantastic rustic cabin close to ski resorts

  • 5 of 5

This place was great and Cy was fantastic to work with. We had a group of 8 friends and it was the perfect size, with more than enough room for all of us. It's a truly beautiful cabin and the location is great...only about 10 minutes from Canaan Valley and Timberline! Will definitely stay here again!

Just a note to be careful if you don't have an all-wheel drive vehicle as the entrance to the development can be a little tricky. A few of the cars staying in houses on the street had issues getting out but it was nothing that a little kitty litter and salt couldn't fix. Just a heads up if you drive a Ford Focus like one of the people in our group! Again, no fault of the owner's and it didn't change how we felt about the cabin (it was fantastic). Just something to be cautious about if there's a lot of snow and ice when you stay!

GREAT WEEKEND

  • 5 of 5

We stayed Labor Day weekend. We had a group from ages 4-65 and everyone had a great time. There was something for everyone to do. The cabin was very well stocked with everything we needed from spices to toys. It was nice that there was gates on the steps and on the porch to keep the kids safe. The lake was beautiful. We all did some fishing and everyone caught something. The cabin was easy to find and close to everything we needed. We would definitely rent this cabin again for a family vacation.

The house was great!

  • 5 of 5

We went up in the summer time. There was a lot of things for the kids to do hiking, rafting, float the river in tubes. Also there was the zoo and horseback riding. The fishing was great. The house has perfect. The downstairs was a great place for all the kids to hang out. The kitchen was the best stocked kitchen I have ever stayed in. We will be back soon!

Huge cabin on expansive private property

  • 5 of 5

Three buddies and I stayed here for a guys' weekend at the end of July/beginning of August. The location was relatively easy to find - not too far from the cute town of Davis or from the resort property of Canaan Valley. In fact, we ventured into Davis a few times for food and groceries. The development in which the property is located is very private. There are about a dozen homes, some situated around a small lake where you can fish (catch & release, as the owner will tell you). There is also a great deal of open space in case you want to throw a football around or just run around in circles. Make sure to explore the picnic/playground area that is set off from the grouping of homes; you will have to walk down the private gravel road to find it, but it is pretty nice for kids. The one complaint I would have about the property is that it is not as remote or "woodsy" as it is portrayed in the profile. There are woods behind the house, sure, but the development is very much a development. This isn't camping or even wilderness living. Also, unless you bring your own canoes, kayaks, or rafts, you will not have a way to access the lake from anywhere except the shore. You do not want to swim in this water (the "No Swimming" sign will confirm that...)!

The owner of the house is very helpful. He makes the stay as comfortable as possible and provides informative details about the surrounding area. He contacted us several times ahead of our stay to ensure that we were well prepared.

The house itself is absolutely amazing. All of the amenities listed are available, functional, and fantastic. The interior is gorgeous, with ample space for multiple families or a school/community group. The porch is beautiful, and it allows for different groups to occupy different spaces, whether that be the hot tub, the picnic table, the rockers, etc. The only odd things that stick out about the home are 1. the thermostat was not responsive, 2. a lot of what you think you might need for cooking is already in the cupboards (look around!), 3. we experienced several power outages/surges during our stay, and 4. the hot tub takes a while to heat up (something else communicated by the owner prior to the stay).

With that said, this was an excellent choice for our group!

Just the vacation we were hoping for

  • 5 of 5

I

am genuinely torn about writing this review. On the one hand, it was a fantastic cabin and the perfect location for a relaxing week in West Virginia. On the other hand, I don't want to let the secret out because I want to be sure I can book this place again next summer.

The Good

This was a beautiful and very well maintained cabin just south of Davis. It was perfectly situated with parks nearby and day trips to keep us active. We hiked trails at Blackwater Falls. Paddle boarded at the lake there. Took the ski lift up to the top of Canaan Valley State Park and saw a bear at the top of Bald Nob Overlook. Went to the top of Seneca Rocks and gaped at the sheer drop-offs from the crest of the ridge. And every night we went fishing from 6-9pm in the lake on the property.

The house was spectacular. Plenty of space and lots of "living spaces". Very open and inviting floor-plan. Very well accommodated. I'm still not sure if I like the hot tub more or the hammock. The kitchen was well equipped. The rooms were tiding and pleasant.

The Bad

This can't really be seen as a flaw of the property, but I was surprised that it was so close to the road. From the pictures I expected it to be tucked far away from civilization, when in reality it is right off of Rt 32. This turned out to be a good thing because it made access to town super convenient for quick runs to the store.

The Ugly

So the worst part of the week was that our friends from Colorado took an interest in fishing. This is great, because I love fishing. The only problem is that they are now ruined for life. I have spent a lot of time with my line in "stocked ponds," but I have never had so much success in pulling out Large Mouth Bass over, and over, and over. One evening we pulled out roughly 14 bass (all between 12 to 16 inches). Our friends young son managed to hook this monster (http://imgur.com/O4NfWVd), and needed my help to get it to shore.

Bottom line is, our friends now have the most outrageously overblown expectations for fishing and, undoubtedly, they will be disappointed with just about any fishing experience they have from here on out.

If you want to avoid the noise and commotion of the beach but still want a fantastic family getaway, scoop this place up.
