Overview

About the property

This is a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom cabin located right on the creek.

Please read the entire description (we've had guests not read this description and have incorrect expectations... we have the faults listed (no place is perfect)... but you have to read this the description to know what they are): We will be unavailable for the most of the month of June because we will be having a baby. Since I'm our cleaner, know that if you book a property during June it may not be clean.

Hidden Creek Cabin is a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom cabin that sits right on the creek. One bedroom has a king-size bed and the other has a queen size bed. The bedroom with the queen-size bed has a door that opens up onto the screen porch out front. We allow 8 people to stay but there are beds for 6 (there is a full-size futon in the common area of the cabin). There is also a screen porch out back that overlooks the creek. Currently one door is broken due to a bad wind storm. From the screen porch, you can access a stone patio which also overlooks the creek and has a small fire pit for campfires. There is a stone fireplace, NOT usable at this time, in the living room and a full kitchen (smaller size stove/oven though). Pets are welcome but do require a fee of $55 per pet. This is a one time fee per pet... not per night.

This is a real cabin in the mountains built long ago. Therefore it will not feel like new construction (since it isn't new construction), but then again, that is what gives the cabin its charm because it is unique and older. Guest must let us know within 15 minutes of arrival if property has issues. Owners will resolve issues as soon as possible but no refund will be given for issues. Guest must allow us to fix issues. The forest contains all sorts of wildlife and deer can even be seen at times walking through the yard. Because this is a real cabin, there are things you should expect to find in an older real cabin such as spider webs (we clean them for every guest but they do reappear quickly), ladybugs, critters, ants, insects, and stink bug during certain times of the year.

Quiet hours are from 9 pm to 9 am. Check in 4 pm until 7 pm. Checkout 11 am, or earlier. Early check-ins, before 4, or Late check-ins, after 7 pm, and late check-outs, after 11 am, require a $20 per hour fee for pre-approval and $30 when not pre-approved, before booking, and possible cancellation of booking. Please ask in advance about late check-ins.

No smoking in the cabin. No beer pong or Hookahs.

Guests are required to sign a rental agreement before arrival and a photo ID. For this reason, the person who makes the reservation has to be the there at the time of check-in, unless the contract is signed and arrangements are made for someone else to check-in in advance.

All pet fee(s), early/late check-in or late check-out, firewood or extra person fees are not refundable once paid.

Failure to show up/check in or contact owner before 4 pm of day of arrival will result in cancellation. Host reserves the right to rebook property if guest does NOT contact owner. There will be a charge of $30 an hour for guests arriving more than 30 minutes later than the arrival time that they give us on the day of arrival. Arrival times must be sent in the message thread upon booking. We will do our best to work with you if your time changes.

Illegal drugs will not permitted on our properties under any circumstances. Smoking is not permitted inside any house or cabin or on any screen porch. There will be a $750 charge for any smoking in either of these areas. Illegal drugs being used anywhere on the property will result in a $750 charge. Kegs and hookahs are not permitted anywhere on property under any circumstances. There will be a $500 charge should either of these items (kegs or hookahs) be found on the property (this includes outside areas too). If smoking (inside or on screen porches), illegal drugs (meaning what is illegal in Virginia), keg(s), hookah(s) or fireworks (there is a $500 fine for having fireworks or for shooting firearms at a property) are found on the property the guest will be asked to leave and there will be no refund whatsoever for any portion of the stay (including any future days/nights). Guests failing to check-out by 11 am agree to pay $50 an hour for a late check-out beginning at 11:01 am. If the guest is still there at 12:00 noon then then the charge is another $50 and so on with each additional hour the guest overstays their reservation. Late check-outs require prior written permission and applicable late check-out fees to be paid.

Owners are not responsible to mail or hold on to left items.

No check-ins or checkouts on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. Owners only have the right to cancel a reservation without refund for reservations made to check in or out on these days. If owners allow the booking, a charge of $100 will be charged to check-in.

Lovely, but not as quiet and private as we expected

  • 3 of 5

The house itself is quite comfortable, although the lighting is a challenge - if you are planning to spend any time reading, best bring some extra light, at night the inside of the house just doesn't have enough light. Also, for those who enjoy cooking, the kitchen is not well provisioned in terms of cooking utensils, etc. Bring everything you think you might need to prepare your meals! We also had a problem with one of the exterior doors being broken so that our dogs could run out whenever they wanted from the porch, it was not at all secured.

The immediate location of the cabin is truly lovely. I really enjoyed the porch and the creek, so relaxing to hear the water babbling and to sit out there. But the photos are rather misleading in terms of how remote or quiet it is. We could not find anywhere to walk directly from the cabin because of all the "No Trespassing" signs on every little dirt road, so you have to drive to do any walking. There is quite a bit of car traffic that comes through, and the other cabins are quite nearby, on three of the four sides of the cabin. So there is not much of a sense of privacy, and you have the noise from cars and motorbikes fairly regularly. I probably would not go back for this reason, but if you are not so concerned about the privacy/quiet element, then the place is comfortable and has its charm for sure.

Beautiful stream and great proximity to trails

  • 3 of 5

The stream is beautiful and we caught a number of brook trout nearby. We chose the location for the stream for fly fishing. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars because of some issues with the cabin itself. There was no door on the porch while we were there so it did not keep bugs out and it had not been cleaned so it was needed to be wiped down well to use. When we locked the back door we needed a knife to pop the lock back open which seems like a safety concern. The size of the cabin is great and we did not mind the rustic feel but I recommend wearing shoes inside because our feet turned black after walking around inside on the floor. It is close to some beautiful trails for hiking!

Lovely cabin in a lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

We had such a relaxing and enjoyable stay. In fact, we stayed an extra day. Very accommodating hosts and a perfect getaway. Lovely is the word that describes it all and continues to come to mind as I remember our time there.

Great location and cabin.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lot of time in the Shannondoah Valley and this cabin was the perfect place to come back to. Peaceful and yet close to all we needed and enjoyed. Great service from owners as well. Highly recommend this cabin.

Peaceful house by the creek

  • 4 of 5

This house was just what my husband and I were looking for - an easy to access escape to the woods from the summer heat in the city! Being only about 2 hours away from DC and 20 minutes from Harrisonburg made the location really easy to access, and yet the quiet drive and old trees made it feel like we were in a little mountain community miles away from anything else. This house has two amazing screened in porches (one in front and one in the back overlooking the babbling creek). The rocking chairs, ceiling fans, and protection from the bugs made it easy to sit out there all day long! My nephews loved playing along the creek and I enjoyed listening to it at night. The inside of the cabin was much more spacious than I was anticipating and was full of charming character.

The only reason I didn't rate this cabin 5 stars was because the reservation and pre-check-in process seemed rather lengthy and involved for just a quick weekend rental (although I understand that many may rent this space for longer periods). Limitations of the HomeAway site meant that I owed additional money on top of what was quoted (although that was clearly spelled out in the description). I use sites like HomeAway and AirBnB for the ease of searching and renting a space - so the extra steps figuring out a second way to pay the remaining balance was less than ideal. Also, despite paying ahead of time for 6 people, there were only 3 towels in the cabin when we arrived. We had brought extra just in case, so it wasn't a big deal... but could have been frustrating had we been less prepared.
