One of the original beach houses In Kapoho Beach Lots, Jo Mitchel's is right on the water. You can't beat this location for easy access to the warm, calm inlet waters. You can relax in the lounge chairs or sit on the bench on the concrete landing, then just walk down the stairs right into the thermally heated fresh and salt water and swim and snorkel with the colorful fish and giant sea turtles that come right up in front of the property each day. Just a few blocks walk to the Champagne Pond where you can soak in the 80 - 90 degree water, too! The beach house is comfortable and relaxing - not fancy! But it has what you need to enjoy an old-fashioned Hawaiian tropical vacation. It's fully furnished with 2 bedrooms each with a comfortable queen bed plus 1 single bed in living room. Sleeps up to 5 people. Note: You walk through one bedroom to get to the the stairway to the master bedroom. It's well stocked with linens, towels, kitchen utensils, plus snorkel gear and boogie boards for water fun! You can fall asleep to the tropical breeze blowing through the windows of the master bedroom, and waves breaking a few feet away. Get away from the hustle and bustle and relax here! There's an indoor bathroom with a shower, or just a few steps away from the main house is a separate private bathroom with large shower. There's a covered old fashioned barbeque area with a picnic table on the lawn and tables under the covered lanai. There's Satellite TV provided. No internet to distract you here from your lovely vacation! (Note: AT&T cell works here). There's a laundry room with washer and dryer.
"Wind pulsing through the cabin as swimsuits twist on the clothesline. Waking up as if in clouds. Floating alongside Honu. Trying and tossing our first line. Snorkeling 3x a day - surrounded by unique colorful fish and hearing the distant clink of lava rocks shifting in the surge. Meeting Pele's work and seeing the local offerings to the Power. This place is so quiet and magical. "
Our third time here. Morning snorkel in the lagoon - fish, turtles eels. The kitchen is dated, but we cooked there every night but one without a problem. Great swimming steps from your back door is priceless.
This beautifully situated beach cottage was truly a welcome retreat! Enclosed in a gated community, we felt safe and the quietness of the neighborhood was very much appreciated. How we looked forward to our morning snorkeling adventures right in our own back yard complete with docile seat turtles and friendly reef fish. Then it was off exploring the free zoo, enjoying a delicious lunch in town (Pahoa) at the Natural Food Market, hiking Volcano Park, horseback riding at Paniolo Ranch 3,000 ft. up in the grasslands and visiting the breathtaking waterfalls outside of Hilo. Exploring the coffee plantations in Kona Town was informative and enjoyable as well.
Don't forget the crafters market and Produce Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays right in downtown Hilo near the water.
Jo Mitchell's Beach House was accurately described. A super kitchen, tons of towels and snorkel gear, a full-sized washer and dryer and even satellite TV! There was a nice fan in the upstairs bedroom which was very welcome. Thank you Jo and Art for caring about us and Grace! We will tell everyone about our stay- Blessings to you and future guests.
We had a really good time on this leg of our trip. We love the Puna district and the location of this house is great. A turtle greeted us on two of three mornings and the snorkeling and even fish viewing from the bank was literally like living in an aquarium.
We tend to agree with other reviewers that stated the house needs some updates. Yes it's an old house exposed to lots of salt air, but the fridge and stove were so rusty that it made the kitchen feel unsanitary. Linoleum was torn in the living room and much of the furniture was more worn than some garage sale pieces I had in college. On the plus side the upstairs master bed was very comfortable and we slept very well, so it was very livable once we got adjusted to the condition.
Wonderful location, had everything we needed. Hoping to come back soon!
We just checked out from this house today. The location was amazing but the house was dirty and lacking. When we got there we found a pair of VERY soiled underwear just by the foot of the bed that was right in the living room. Maybe this set the tone, but the rest of the house seemed quite dirty and worn. (we used to live near here and are quite used to island living, rust and salt water wear and tear, but this house needs some serious upkeep).
On a more positive note, the location was very nice and we just spent as little time in the house as possible.
Our next time through we will rent a different house in the same neighborhood. It seems like you can get a much nicer place in the same area for the same price.
Located in a rural setting with lots of beautiful scenery on the easterly coast of the Pacific Ocean and Kapoho Bay. Only about 30 miles to the Volcano National Park and about 15 minutes to the lava flow viewing site (as Pele permits). A few blocks to Champagne Pond and a few miles to the public hot ponds. Just a mile to the Waiopae tidepools for great snorkeling. Close to Lava Tree Park.
Note: As of 10/2014, there is a lava flow slowly advancing towards Pahoa. This could be a once in a lifetime chance to witness a change in the Hawaii landscape, if the lava advances into the town. There is a possibility that the highway 130 could be covered by the lava. The County has already built several alternate contingency routes - good gravel roads for travel to and from the Puna area, if needed. The car rental companies will allow rental cars to use these roads.
