About Rick

Rick Dyer is an inventor. Rick is best known as the creator of the hit video game 'Dragon’s Lair'.

Dyer is a licensed REALTOR® and Licensed Real Estate Agent. Rick is a twenty (25) year resident in Julian, California; and considers it a great privilege to live in such a beautiful place. I live in Julian to unwind, relieve stress and center myself. Our family fell in love with the peace and tranquility of the Mountains, the magnificent location and coziness of the house. For me, it is a magical place, and I love it as much as the first time I discovered Julian.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:

When I travel up the mountain from San Diego, only a 60 minute drive or so, I can physically feel the layers of stress peel off. By the time I get there I am already in a renewed and relaxed state. Most noticeable is the lack of traffic and sirens, just the quiet sounds of nature. I love the four seasons, each for their own unique character. I originally thought this was a winter resort, but actually it is popular all seasons, and especially summer with Lake Cuyamaca only nine minutes away. Located on a private lane, away from the highways, surrounded by trees and spectacular Mountain views.

I enjoy relaxing on my deck taking in the Mountains, valley, the changing cloud formations in the distance and listening to birds and the wind blowing through the pine trees.

Rick purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Rick chose San Diego County

Great location, great views, 20-minute walk to the Julian Township!!

CHRISTMAS comes to Julian every year in an old-fashioned way-like a Norman Rockwell painting which reflects small-town American life and brings the spirit of the holidays to heart. Holiday time in Julian gets closer to that dream than most spots in Southern California where you'll feel a nip in the fresh mountain air, stroll through a quaint, festive town, and maybe catch a glimpse of snow capped mountains.

The holiday season in Julian also offers an opportunity to shop at small boutiques and craft shows, without crowds or lines, for one-of-a-kind gifts. From antiques and collectibles to jewelry and home décor to old fashioned candy and treats, Julian offers a wide variety of unique treasures to discover.

You can greet Santa a couple of times during the season, indulge in a Victorian Christmas tea, sing carols with costumed holiday carolers, sip a cup of hot chocolate or spiced cider. And you can watch the annual Living Nativity scene, cuddle under a blanket while riding down Main Street in a carriage, stay in a cozy bed & breakfast that's all decked out in holiday finery, or even stroll down a quiet country lane.

You can enjoy Julian's holiday ambiance through early January.

What makes this cottage unique

Julian was founded following the Civil War, when displaced Confederate Veterans from Georgia headed West to seek their fortunes in a new, mostly unsettled land. Among these were cousins Drue Bailey and Mike Julian, who found a lush meadow between Volcan Mountain and the Cuyamacas to their liking. They were there in 1869 when cattleman Fred Coleman found the first flecks of gold in a creek. It was San Diego County's first and only gold rush.

The town was named Julian, in honor of Mike, who later was elected San Diego County Assessor. The town was never big, at the most boasting a population of about 600---more than reside within the historic district today. Rumor has it that Julian almost became San Diego's county seat.

The gold rush was short-lived, nearly over within a decade. But the pioneers stayed and began farming the rich land. While many crops were planted and animals pastured, Julian proved to be a fine place to grow apples. Apples continue to be produced in Julian. Their sweet, fresh flavor lures thousands to the mountains each fall, when visitors will find fruit stands overflowing with crisp fruit, homemade cider and other delicacies.

Fun with the family

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved this house! We all enjoyed the home theater very much so and they had plenty of movies to choose from!

The Jacuzzi was perfect for late nights and we even saw a deer both mornings right on that hillside.

Definitely recommend this place for a fun time with the family.

Great Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My extended family and I had an excellent time at the main and guest houses. Maria was incredibly nice, and of the rental properties we have stayed at thus far, no one except this owner/manager has taken the time to drive with us to the property and give us a tour of the facility. We had toddlers, adults, and grandparents. Relaxation and fun was had by all. One member of our party has difficulty with stairs, so this might be a factor to consider when staying here (as listed on the property description). The property was very clean, had updated appliances, and one could tell that there was a lot of attention to detail in the accommodations. We will definitely be coming back!

Girls Weekend

  • 5 of 5

There was 7 of us woman who were all related that stayed at the NEST. We rented the main house & the guest house so that we could all have our own space. It worked out just great for us. We were able to BBQ the one night and sit in the Jacuzzi and visit. Really comfortable movie seats in the movie room. We did not have time or want to with our short visit to watch movies but thought that it would be great if we were there for more than 2 days. Maybe 5 minutes at the most from down town. We visited the down town area and then when out of town to do wine and chocolate tasting. Did our own Hard Cider taste test at the house. The property is very clean , updated and maintained. We talked about coming back again so I'd say that is a thumbs up! Thank you Marie & Rich ( & Peter)

Great cabin, lots of amenities!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at this cabin during the Apple Festival days in Julian. The check in process is easy, and Maria does a great job at showing you the property and all of it's amenities. The cabin is exactly as it looks in the pictures, and the description is very accurate, so no disappointments, if anything, is even more than what you expect to have in a vacation rental, it really feels like being home.

The view from the front deck is beautiful at night, you can see so many stars is amazing. The location is very convenient, less than 5 minutes drive to town. The guesthouse is nicely decorated and very comfortable. The Jacuzzi is great after a full day of apple picking. The kitchen is very well equipped, we also enjoyed the BBQ, all you have to do is bring your food! The owner gives you a coffee bag, so you have a nice start of your day :)

Mi family loved it so much, they are already asking me to book for next year :) Thanks.

The Perfect VRBO House for a Relaxing Julian Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The theme of our getaway was simply to escape the sweltering heat in San Diego brought by the Santa Ana winds. We were so relieved to find that the temperature in Julian was an amazing 15 degrees cooler than where we live in North County of San Diego. We've rented using VRBO several times, and this rental stood out among the rest for many reasons. It was noticeably clean throughout. Maria did a great job walking us through how to use the TV, movie theater, and spa equipment. It was convenient that the TV system is up to date so that we could connect to our Netflix and Amazon accounts to watch TV shows and movies online. A lot of hotels these days don't even have this yet (probably because they want to sell you movies in the room). Speaking of movies, the management lets you check out as many Blu Ray movies as you would like on their list. That was very nice because our son was able to enjoy several he hadn't seen before. The spa jacuzzi was a huge plus to have here, including the robes we were provided with, to make our vacation even more relaxing and enjoyable. The Nest sits up on a hill so you have a nice view across the valley. It's very peaceful here... mostly hearing birds chirping and the wind blowing through the trees which makes it a nice place to decompress and forget about the stress of everyday life in the city. We will definitely be back, and would recommend this place to friends!

Great place to relax with family

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed here with some families and the Nest couldn't have been more perfect for our stay. The amenities and location were perfect as the house was quaint, clean and located very close to town. Our kids loved the theater room to watch movies and play in their own space. Having the outdoor patios to enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery was perfect for us adults and we spent the majority of our time out there. I would highly recommend staying at the nest as the inside isn't only clean but very nicely decorated and equipped with modern updated appliances. We look forward to coming back to the nest in the future.

Julian is a small mountain community in Southern California located at the intersection of California highways 78 and 79, about 50 miles northeast of San Diego. This historic gold-mining town is nestled among oak and pine forests between the north end of the Cuyamaca Range and the south slope of Volcan Mountain.

The entire township of Julian is a Designated Historical District. Its image as an early California frontier town with pioneer store fronts, historic sites and guided tours of Eagle and High Peak Mines accounts for much of its modern appeal. Tourism is Julian's largest industry, followed by cattle raising.

Julian is also unique among Southern California communities for its cold-winter climate, ideal for growing apples. All Julian apples are sold locally as apple pies, apple cider or whole fruit. In October, 10,000 apple pies a week are baked in Julian, when Southern California tourists flock here for the fall colors, cool breezes, frontier atmosphere and its famous Apple Festival.

Julian began as a California mining camp when A.E. (Fred) Coleman discovered placer gold at Coleman Creek in 1869. Drue Bailey founded Julian City in 1870, naming it after his cousin Mike Julian. Bailey and Julian were cousins and ex-confederate soldiers who had left Georgia after the Civil War for the California gold fields.

By the summer of 1872, there were 50 houses, 3 hotels, 4 stores, 2 restaurants, 1 schoolhouse and the "usual number of saloons" to service an an estimated 300 miners working in the area. Numerous hard rock mines were established in 1879 in the Julian and Banner area yielded an estimated $4 to $5 million dollars in gold ore.

Unlike other such camps, Julian survived after the mines played out because of its climate, rich soil and proximity to San Diego. Julian's first newspaper, The Julian Sentinel, began publishing in 1887. Since James Madison first brought the first apple trees to Julian in the early 1870s, Julian apples have won many blue ribbons at places like the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, the St. Louis Fair and the San Francisco World's Fair of 1915. The first Julian apple celebration was held in 1909 , but wasn't followed by another until 1949.

WEATHER / CLIMATE

Julian has four moderate but distinct seasons with average annual precipitation of 30 inches. Cool springs and falls contrast with hot days and cool nights during summer and occasional winter snowfall from December to March. Various climates, from desert to high mountains, exist within 25 miles of Julian.
