I am a retired pharmacist who grew up in Decatur Illinois then went to school at Ohio State University and then graduated from the University of Illinois school of Pharmacy in Chicago. I spent most of my adult life in Key West ,Florida but now reside in Highsrpings, Florida.
Robert S. Baker purchased this cottage in 2013
I originally came to Cortez in 1974 and worked in a local boat yard for 3 years until I got my Florida pharmacy liscense. I fell in love with 'the village' and villagers and decided to return last year
The Pelican cottage has that old florida costal cottage style. The cottage is located in the village atmosphere and has hard wood floors and period furnishing harkening back to a world of peaceful coexistant with ones environment.
Just spent 2 weeks at the Pelican Cottage in Cortez. Very nicely appointed, good, quiet location. The cottage contains everything you need, including a tandem kayak, beach chairs and umbrella, and even beach toys and fishing rods. It also includes a bait fridge in the garage. It is within short walking distance to several fine Cortez restaurants, and a five minute drive to Anna Maria beaches. You can't go wrong with this one.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pelican Cottage last week.
We were very impressed by all the facilities available at the cottage. We were very comfortable there, and our only regret is that we did not arrange a longer visit! Maybe next time we will!
Some friends who were staying on Anna Maria Island who had visited us there were also impressed with the setup. I have already given them one of your business cards - they are regular visitors to this part of Florida, and would be very surprised if they did not contact you to hire Pelican Cottage some time in the future!
Thanks and regards,
As I was going through VRBO to plan this years spring break vacation, I came upon Pelican Cottage and realized I never posted a review! This home is hands down the BEST rental I've ever booked on VRBO, and I've stayed in handfuls of beach rentals. We fell in love with the home as soon as we pulled in the driveway. The home has been thoughtfully and lovingly restored and updated, it's just beautiful! Everything you need is provided, you really don't need to bring anything but your clothes! I used the grill out back daily, we lounged on the hammock and took long walks around the neighborhood every morning. We loved the convienence of how close we were to the beach, jump in the car and you're there in 2 min. The quaint beaches are gorgeous and not crowded, which is just how we like it! I also met a couple of the neighbors, and they were just so nice! We hated to leave. It really felt like home to us.
Where do I start?
House description: fully equipped cottage with everything you may need and more, from a Kayak to Ibuprofen. Everything is just wonderful, I’ve stayed in many places and this cottage by far takes the price. Cortez is a wonderful fishing village full of artists, hardworking people and character.
The beaches of Anna Maria Island are a quick 5-7 min bicycle ride away or 2 mins by car, want to walk? 10-12 mins. There are several restaurants nearby, but I recommend you head to the Star Fish company fish market, buy some and cook it in the cottage. The star fish restaurant itself, highly rated on yelp and other sites, honestly is overrated. The long wait is not worth the soggy mess you get 2 hours later. Buy the fish and cook it!
Back to the house, bikes, laundry, cable tv, wifi, comfortable bed, sofa bed, two fridges, coolers, sand toys, everything you need to have a good time while you stay in Cortez.
To summarize everything: don’t wait and book your stay.
Cortez is a quaint fishing village established in 1860 and still functioning today. Just walking around an observing the old Florida fishing cottages with their large yards(for drying nets) is interesting Then there is the local restaurant and fresh fish store Star Fish (2 blocks), the Cortez Kitchen bar with live music( fri.sat, sun) which has excellent food, and the sword fish grill, all with in easy walking distance. Then there is the Cortez café for Sunday breakfast(or any day) next to the post office where you have to walk to get your mail. The Cortez market is across the street next to one of the many local antique and coastal art shops of the area. Then there are the beaches (coquina-all shells,Bradenton ,Holms, and Anna Maria) which are some of the best beaches in the world. Then there is Anna Maria fishing pier on the pass into Tampa bay.
Then there are the miles of mangrove creeks on the Inercoastal Waterway and Palma Sola Bay( 2 persons kayak provided) Then there are many kinds of water sports boating ,jet skiing , para-sailing,and sailing. Then there is downtown Sarasota with its many restaurants and live theaters. All in all the pleasant year round temperatures and quaint atmosphere make Cortez wonderful.
