Overview

About the property

Secluded Mountain Ranch, Serene, Peaceful, Beautiful & ONLY 15 minutes to Cd'A!

This magnificent and spacious home has 6 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. The unique setting of this home is at the confluence of two streams and surrounded by pristine natural beauty to stir your heart. Like a painting come to life with romantic rock bridges, quaint stone steps and walls, lush pastures, fruit trees, flowers and jade-green ponds; this is a dream come true! This enchanting home is located at the gateway into the vast National Forest. This 150 Acre ranch is surrounded on three sides by U.S. Forest land; 2 1/2 Million Acres extending to Montana and Canada! There are deer, elk, moose, bear, wolves, bald eagles, wild turkeys, and ermine on or visiting this ranch; and we have maintained the property as a wildlife preserve. There are no visible neighbors and this is a place of serenity, peace and complete quiet except for nature!

The two streams are Marie Creek, which has high water in the Spring and early summer, along with several large pools of water and log waterfalls into mid-July. By early to mid-August, Marie Creek goes underground by the ranch. It continues to run above the ranch in the National Forest. Searchlight Creek runs the north-south length of the ranch and in front of the house. Searchlight Creek runs year round and is a perfect creek for children to play in the creek and the pools.

Home is 4,000 S.F with 6 Bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, 2 Stone Fireplaces and a great Western Decor!

Elk Mountain Ranch was homesteaded in 1908 and the Deed is signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, on display at ranch. The center of the current house was built in 1930, and retains much of the charm of that time period. The later additions are very western and rustic.

This family ranch was offered as a Vacation Rental beginning May 1, 2014 for the first time. The furnishings and décor are that of a high quality, Western motif reflective of the love we have for this beautiful ranch.

The ranch is 150 acres with access into the National Forest. You can pan for gold in the creek! We now have a fire pit and provide firewood for your use! You can bring your Mountain Bikes, ATV's, Snowmobiles or Cross Country Skis and stay for a fun-filled vacation summer or winter! We do provide sleds for our awesome sledding hill and snowshoes to use on the ranch or into the adjacent National Forest land.

Elk Mountain Ranch is also a private trout hatchery comprised of three separate spring-fed ponds where they are raised from fingerlings to full size adult trout which in turn, spawn, and continue the cycle. We provide trout food for our guests for which the trout which put on a spectacular show! We allow absolutely no fishing on the ranch and breaking this rule will forfeit one's damage deposit. Only the bald eagles and osprey fish unhindered; and we want our guests to enjoy all this majesty of nature.

About Michael Dickson

Elk Mountain Ranch has been in our family for over 40 years. My Dad was a German Artistic Stone Mason as is evident at the ranch. Our family immensely enjoyed and loved living at the ranch. We enjoyed foreign guests who came and stayed at the ranch, and it was such a wonderful experience, we decided to officially offer the home as a Vacation Rental. My parents lived there into their late 80's, as it was such a healthy environment. The ranch is now a wildlife reserve and timber farm. We live a short distance away which is convenient for care-taking the home and property. When you stay there, you have the home all to yourself!

Michael Dickson purchased this chateau / country house in 1970

Why Michael Dickson chose Coeur d'Alene

Elk Mountain Ranch is one of the most unique and beautiful properties in the Northwest. We found it amazing to feel so remote, secluded and peaceful and yet we could commute into Coeur d'Alene in 15 minutes for Shopping, Groceries, Restaurants, Church, Social Activities, Art Shops, the City Beach, or Silverwood Theme Park. In the photo we are tubing on the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River which is just 25 minutes east, via Interstate 90.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

At Elk Mountain Ranch you can imagine it is 1906 and experience the peace and observe the wildlife just like the first pioneers did! ....If you'd rather golf at the World's only floating green, that is only 15 minutes away!....If you'd like a 'Cowboy steak' that is so huge you can't eat it all, that is 10 minutes away at the famous Wolf Lodge Inn & Steakhouse!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a family from Kanagawa, Japan who stayed at Elk Mountain Ranch before it was officially a Vacation Rental. We and our three children watched "Little House On the Prairie," and were intrigued with the American West. We contacted the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce looking for a recommendation of a real western ranch to stay at on our vacation. Elk Mountain Ranch was recommended. We stayed for 10 days and it was beautiful, memorable, and the best vacation of our entire lives. The owners even had Western cowboy hats, prairie bonnets and clothes so we could dress up and take pictures. We went horseback riding, hiking, enjoyed the ranch and the easy drive to Coeur d'Alene. It was an experience of a lifetime and we wouldn't trade the memories for a million dollars!!! We still keep in touch with the ranch owners and love them like family!! Thank you so much!

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our stay at Elk Mountain Ranch. Mike and Susan have anticipated guests wants and needs. There was a full playroom for kids as well as outdoor sports equipment, snow shoes, sleds, etc. The kitchen was stocked with anything you might need for preparing the perfect meal. The views from the great room are breath taking. It is a perfect place for family fun!

Amazing Winter Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was a fantastic property for our winter getaway/retreat. A bunch of different friends from a few different churches get together every year for some winter fun. This house has so many different areas to hang out and then a huge great room to come together. All the amenities were amazing! We definitely would recommend this to bigger families and larger groups! It accommodated all of our needs and then some. Can’t wait to come back next year.

DO NOT STAY HERE WITH YOUNG CHILDREN, NOT SAFE!

  • 1 of 5

We had a bad experience from the second we walked in the house. The owner had mentioned lighting the fireplace for our arrival, but we asked them not to because we have two young children. When we got there the fire was lit. And the owner’s response to why they did this?Because we arrived so late, (4:30pm) we should have been able to control our kids between getting there and bedtime. It is extremely rude to tell us to control our kids around the fireplace instead of just not lighting a fire like we requested. The room has a heater they could have turned on.

A big reason we chose this house was the sledding hill for the kids. They did not tell us about all of the junk that they have on the side of the sledding hill, which included wood with nails sticking out and a roll of barbed wire. Close enough to sled into. They denied this and said this debris was several hundred feet away from the hill.

They have 3 sets of steep stairs and no baby gates. All of the upstairs rooms have railings that can be climbed on like a ladder. This limited the rooms we could use for the kids. These balconies are not in any of their photos. They should also mention that they have wasps, we found 3 inside during our stay.

We did our best putting things up where the kids couldn’t get them, but they did get to a magazine and one of the saran wrap window covers. However, the owner also blamed us for damaging other items. I am willing to pay for what my kids damaged,

but it would be less than $20 and they are trying to charge us for other items in their house.

The photos of the home must not be current, they have a lot more knick knacks out than the photos show. Guests look at these photos to help determine if the home fits their families needs, and most parents dont want to spend their entire vacation hiding tchotchkes from their kids.

The wifi only works outside in the driveway and sometimes by the front window, there is no cell service, land line is only for local calls.

The closest grocery stores are 25-30 mins away, not 15 minutes like the owner will tell you.

For the owners, I’d suggest better descriptions of your house and better photos. Clean up the barbed wire and a working baby gate would be a bonus.

For renters, if you have young children, or children who cannot be “controlled” around fireplaces, barbed wire, steep stairs, balconies, wasps or if you wouldn’t trust them to walk around an antique store unsupervised, then I’d suggest looking for another home

Owner's Response: This guest left the following comment in our guest book on the day she left: "JANUARY 12-15 THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL HOME. WE HAD A GREAT TIME. THE T. FAMILY" (WITH A SMILELY FACE) We have had 100's of children stay at Elk Mountain Ranch over the past 5 years and everyone has enjoyed our beautiful family home, the western décor and the amenities kept there to enhance their enjoyment during their stay. We have never had a similar problem with a guest. Our previous guests have treated our home with respect and supervised their children. We like to meet our guests upon arrival so we can explain some of the many details of this home. For instance, we have a cell phone booster into the great room as the reception is limited, and cell phones do also work outside by the front window. We also have Hughes Gen-4 High Speed Internet, which is via satellite, and we have WIFI which works fine and we have not had any complaints about it. These guests were late, we waited 3 hours for them and had to leave before they arrived. The children of this guest were not supervised and we charged for only part of the damage they caused. We did not profit from $75.00 of the damage deposit. This does not cover our time in buying a new radio/CD player, library books, 2 chess sets, decorations, or bay window winterization kit. We did not charge for magazines, the Spirograph, puzzles or games we tossed because pieces are gone. The driving time from the ranch to Coeur d'Alene is 15.7 minutes. It may take a few minutes longer depending on which grocery store you choose, or if you encounter winter driving issues. The sledding hill is over 100' from the place we store surplus ranch supplies, and since it is surrounded by trees, it would be impossible to sled into this area without hitting a tree. We have a high quality Fisher-Price baby gate which works fine if you know how to use it, or you can call us on the land line if you have a question. Our number is posted by the phone for your convenience. The photos of the home are updated and correct. This is a private family home on a working ranch and not the average vacation rental house. It is not a sterilized Disneyland environment. Children coming here must be supervised. There are ponds, running creeks, millions of acres of U.S. Forest land surrounding the ranch, and it is a special destination site. This guest was correct in stating, "If you have children who cannot be controlled, then look for another home."

Christmas Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your home with our family. What a great way to celebrate Christmas, with 4 families (11 total guests ranging in ages from 12 to 80) we had plenty of room. The snow fell right on cue for a beautiful white Christmas. We couldn't have asked for anything better!
