"We had a brilliant time!" "We had to come back!"

Our beaming visitors say Béral is the perfect getaway for adults and for kids! The traditional 18th-century farmhouse in white Quercy stone is matched by the splendour of its private full-size heated outdoor pool (cleaned with salt), large terrace with ping-pong & barbeque, orchard with swings and hammock, and exquisite setting. All has been sensitively restored to be characterful but with modern conveniences (including wifi). The property is set into the side of a hill, with everything facing south; the terrace, pool and gardens are spread out to give wonderful views over the fields of sunflowers.

Inside, the farmhouse has a large main living room, with stone and whitewashed walls, a traditional corner kitchen and a beamed open fireplace. To either side are delightful bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with a king and a cot if needed. All the rooms have views over the valley. The upstairs bathroom has a hipbath with a shower, and a toilet. Downstairs are two more bedrooms - both with antique floor tiles and two single beds - and a second bathroom. The house has been tastefully restored to retain all its ancient character, but with modern facilities throughout.

The house is particularly well laid out for a single family or two families together. But the upper floor is also fantastic for a couple traveling alone - see our Special Offers for couples!

There are too many attractions in the area to suggest more than a few. Among the distinctive villages, Lascabanes has beautiful flowers and a lovely church; Lauzerte, high on a hill, a carefully restored bastide with a remarkable town square and good festivals; Saint-Cirq Lapopie, a 45-minute drive up the Lot, is the most famous village of the area, a medieval town in a spectacular cliffside setting hanging over the river - good restaurants too; Montpezat-de-Quercy has a beautiful arcaded square, and half-timbered houses. Rocamadour is not far away. Figeac is well worth a visit, with its museum to Champollion, who cracked the code of the Rosetta Stone.

With the porous limestone prevalent on the causse, there are important caves in the area. The two most famous are the Gouffre de Padirac, a set of enormous chambers going on for miles, with incredible rock formations (north of Gramat), and the huge underground village of Peche Merle, with its prehistoric paintings and traces of early man (up the Célé river from Cahors).

The most interesting castle in the immediate vicinity is the Chateau de Bonaguil, near Fumel, an extravagant folly that mixes the medieval and the Renaissance.

The most well-known museums in the area include the Toulouse Lautrec museum in Albi (which also has a wonderful red-brick cathedral), the Musée des Beaux Arts in Agen, and the Musée d'Ingres in Montaubon. There are many other types of museum covering every aspect of Quercy life.

Among the cathedrals and abbeys, apart from Albi, you might consider driving to the wonderful abbey at Moissac, which also has a stunning set of well-preserved cloisters.

Why Richard Evans chose Lascabanes

We bought Beral as a way to spend time in a beautiful, relatively undiscovered part of rural France. The farmhouse and its land are simply exquisite - an 18th-century house in gleaming white and pink limestone, with gorgeous views and a relaxing garden. We also have a fantastic full-sized swimming pool that is HEATED and kept clean with salt (no chlorine). In fact, apart from the great red wine of Cahors, the Lot is the best area of France for food - goose, duck, fois gras are everywhere, the cheeses are to die for (Roquefort is nearby), the melons are world famous, the vegetables shockingly tasty.... There's something for everyone in the area: adults love the space and quiet, kids the pool, ping-pong and orchard. We've modernized the farmhouse to retain its character while providing all modern amenities. It's truly a memorable place to visit.

What makes this farmhouse unique

No-one forgets the blissful quiet and peace of Beral. The sheer beauty of the surroundings and of the traditional house take our breath away. Yet the property is also great as a place for families to hang out, eat big meals out on the terrace, play together, and then walk it off or visit the wide range of attractions in the area - castles with festivals, prehistoric caves, rivers to kayak on, ancient villages, concerts, theatre, jazz, museums, it goes on and on! For over 15 years, we've been continuously surprised and delighted by all the things to do for all ages in this superb part of France - away from most of the tourists!

We had a brilliant holiday in a beautiful setting surrounded by the French countryside, wild flowers, sunflowers and pretty villages. Our hosts (the owners, Richard and Melissa) were warm,welcoming and generous with their time and information for exploring the area. The garden and swimming pool area are delightful and everything provided for maximum comfort for living outside with several tables in different areas to enjoy a quiet drink or large family meals. The pool is heated and always warm for swimming day or evening. The house is a typical old farmhouse, stone walls and floor boards with comfortable beds and a great family kitchen with farmhouse table. The kitchen was particularly well equiped which made cooking the fresh food from the markets a joy!

We would highly recommend this house for family holidays or groups of friends. We will certainly return, thank you so much.

Beautiful Beral

This is the third time we have visited this truly lovely farmhouse. My partner and I travelled with my two children and my mum and dad. The layout out of the farmhouse is just right, my parents occupying the ground floor level while we stayed in the main part of the farmhouse. The views are superb - giving a real feeling of peace and tranquillity. The salt pool is super - heated and and totally secluded. We spent many hours with our children splashing about. Melissa and Richard, the owners of Beral, were very welcoming and incredibly helpful.

The local area offers a host of things to do and places to visit. Montcuq, the nearest town has a number of good cafes and restaurants as well as a superb market. There is a swimming lake near Montcuq with a "total wipe out obstacle course" which the children loved.

I cannot say enough nice things about both the house, its owners and the location in which Beral lies, the only downside is that we had to come home.

A blissful French escape!

We have just returned from a wonderful second two week stay at Beral with our two teenage sons. Beral is a beautiful old Quercy farmhouse, surrounded by sunflower fields, walnut and plum trees and stunning countryside. The fantastic owners, Richard and Melissa, were on hand for our two stays and that made it even more fun as we spent several evenings drinking and eating wonderful food and Melissa had kindly made us delicious homemade delights as a welcome pack. The owners are full of fantastic tips to make your stay even better and have provided lots of local information including details of walks around Beral. The house itself is very versatile, lots of bedrooms, and a kitchen with everything you could need. Our teenage sons loved having their own "space" downstairs. We ate outside on the various terraces every day and spent hours chilling round the large heated salt water pool, playing table tennis, reading in hammocks, walking in the beautiful countrside, star gazing and swimming at night and eating and drinking far too much wonderful local produce! Beral is wonderfully located for getting around the Lot region, but a car would be essential. We loved shopping at the local daily and night markets for fresh produce, visiting and doing tastings at various wine Chateaux and a slice of French life! Cahors is not very far if you crave a big town, and there are many sites and beautiful places to visit - if you enjoy good wine and food and stunning scenery this is the area to be in!! It still feels relatively undiscovered unlike other areas of the South of France and that makes it even more enchanting. The photos do not do it justice, you need to see it to believe it!! We will definitely be returning as soon as we can.

Our Month at Beral!

I have lived and spent a lot of time in France over the years, and the SW part of the county I love because it's rural and the countryside is extraordinary. I have wanted to bring my husband to France for an extended period of time so he would see why I appreciate the country and this part of France so much. When I saw Beral on VRBO I just knew it would be the perfect place for us. It was my first search and I knew I didn't need to look further! Richard the owner of the property was wonderful when we spoke, and it only confirmed my decision. The house is even better than the photos, it's nicely appointed with antiques, comfortable beds, and a well equipted kitchen. Richard provides a nice accurate booklet for the local villages, the wonderful daily markets, good local hikes, and things to do beyond the Lot (the Department of France we are in). It's also great for families with the pool, and the activities he has available for guests.

My husband and I love nature and hiking, which we did daily, we ate tremendous food, drank great wine, and just enjoyed the countryside. The weather from mid Oct.-mid Nov. when we were there, was perfect, cool in mornings and evenings and warm during the day. The tourists were all gone and it was an opportunity to see what that part of the country is really like! I would highly recommend going this time of year.

We are now planning our next visit and we will return to Beral, it's a place you can't tired of! Très agréable séjour à la campagne avec une grande piscine chauffée

La cuisine est très bien équipée pour cuisiner, les chambres au calme et les différentes terrasses agréables en fonction du soleil. La grande terrasse pour déjeuner est en contrebas de la maison, accès compliqué pour s'y installer à chaque repas.

Une information importante sur la maison: les 2 étages (cuisine/chambres/sdbain en haut et chambres/sdbain en bas) ne communiquent que par l'extérieur.

La vallée est magnifique, le jardin bien entretenu et arboré pour abriter du soleil.

At Béral, near the village of Lascabanes, the wine region of Cahors meets the plum and nut country of Agen. The Cahors vines ripen on the high limestone uplands of the causse and in the sun-drenched valleys of the Lot as it meanders spectacularly westwards from Cahors, studded with chateaux commanding the heights. This is bastide country, endlessly fought over in the Crusades. In these more peaceful times, the villages luxuriate in their heritage, with local markets for meat, cheese (Roquefort is not far away), vegetables, antiques, and everything else imaginable.

The countryside is also great for walking and cycling. From Béral, you can walk straight out onto the oak-strewn landscape of the hills, joining the pilgrim trail of St Jacques de Compostela (GR65) less than a mile away. This is one of the classic walks through France to Spain, a legendary pilgrim route from the Middle Ages. Or drive into nearby Montcuq, 5 miles away, with its shops, cinema and cafés in the village square, as romantic in the sparkling sun as under the late-night stars. Within easy reach are attractions as varied as kayaking on the Lot and Célé rivers, exploring France's most important prehistoric caves at Pech Merle, with their 15,000 year-old paintings, visiting the Toulouse Lautrec Museum in the painter's home town of Albi, and wandering through the exquisite cathedral and cloisters at Moissac.

The local Sunday market in Montcuq is fabulous. It fills the main streets with stalls selling local produce of all kinds. In addition, most nearby towns and cities host markets on certain days of the week. In Prayssac, the market is held on Friday mornings. In Cahors, the covered market (the best place for cheese, and good for wine, meat and vegetables) is open every day at the south end of the Place de la Cathedrale in the old quarter. There is an outside market by the Cathedral on Saturday mornings. Castelnau-Montratier has a Sunday market, and in Luzech it is held on Wednesday mornings.

Béral is situated in Cahors 'black wine' country. Cahors wine, particularly that made from Malbec grapes, is renowned worldwide for its unique style - a perfect accompaniment to the locally popular cassoulet. The Cahors vineyards are everywhere, from Béral to the river Lot. The drive to Prayssac gives you a good view, and the overlook of the Lot valley from Belaye is very special. The Clos de Gamot, outside Prayssac, is one of the most famous, but you are spoilt for choice. If you want to converse in English with an owner to find out more about it, Michael and Susan Spring run the Domaine du Garinet at Le Boulvé - good wine in a beautiful setting. You can get a nice 4 litres en vrac from them, excellent bottles of the Cahors red and of a refreshing Malbec rosé, and - a rarity - a new line of white wine (vin de Quercy). Outside the Cahors region, there are also interesting vineyards around Gaillac, specializing in white wine.
