About Andy Garrett

Originally from rural South Dakota, I've been a resident of the Puget Sound area since 1977 where I've owned and operated an industrial business for 20 years. My home is in nearby Steilacoom.

Andy Garrett purchased this house in 2006

Why Andy Garrett chose Puget Sound

I love the location of this home, with the daily cycle of foot ferry running from Port Orchard to the Bremerton terminal and the big ferry going to and from Seattle. Open the window or step outside and you'll hear the gulls and see the flocks of ducks on the water. You will often hear sea lions from across the bay and always the scent of salt water.

What makes this house unique

I enjoy bicycling and this house sits right on one of my favorite routes. Indeed, it is a popular year-round biking destination because of local waterfront and rural paved roads. The location makes the house a great hub for day trips. The local foot ferry is about a mile and a half away and it travels all day Monday through Saturday to the Bremerton ferry terminal. There's live music on weekends just a couple blocks away at the Blue Goose and good restaurants within walking distance.

Special location, but problems with house.

  • 3 of 5

The two bedroom, one bath house was in a great location on Puget Sound. Views were exceptional. Nice walk into the town of Port Orchard with access to the foot ferry across to Bremerton. There were some problems with the house. Visually, it was overrun with weeds and there was no outdoor seating options, a disappointment given the view and area. Inside, there were no screens on the living room windows, so they could not be opened. In addition, windows that looked out west toward afternoon sun had no shades to filter blinding sunlight. Refridgerator was leaking onto floor, but Andy Garrett (owner) swapped it out with another one. He was attendant to needs and very nice. The faucet on the sink also leaked and he had to replace it. Nice of him to do it, but did take time away from things we were planning.

Additionally, the TV had no cable and only one regular channel. A little confining for a month's stay. To sum it up, the stay was enjoyable, but would have been more so with some outdoor space especially. A small patio would have made a big difference. To be in such a picturesque area during a beautiful summer month and not be able to relax outside was a bit of a bummer.

Perfect for our needs

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this cute cottage home. It is a simple home, both inside and out, but complete and immaculately clean. It is an individual home with 2 bedrooms, living room, dining areas, full kitchen and, even laundry facilities. As others have said, it is located on a beautiful bay where we watched snow-capped mountains in the morning, sunset across the bay in the evening, and lights twinkling on the water all night. There is a home across the street that is not seen in the posted picture, but this rental is elevated and you can see over it. The home was stocked with all the towels, dishes, cleaning supplies and cooking devices that you would need. The cable was limited and we never did get the Amazon firestick to work, though Andy tried his best to explain it to us (blame us for not being as tech savvy as we should be). The home was perfectly located for us in the cute town of Port Orchard. We split our time between the Olympic peninsula and national park, and Seattle. When going to Seattle, do NOT attempt to drive there. The traffic is horrible and the parking can be as much as $9 an hour with no daily limit. Instead take the Bremerton ferry which takes less time than driving, has a nominal round-trip fare of $8.20 for adults and $4.10 for seniors. The ride is relaxing and enjoyable, and drops you right in downtown Seattle. You have two choices for getting to the ferry. You can take the foot ferry from Port Orchard, but there is an $8 parking fee for the day. It is worth it if it is a weekday. The parking in Bremerton was terrible (maybe because of the time of year), but we spent a half hour looking up to a mile from the ferry for parking and were unsuccessful. So we had to drive back to Port Orchard, about a 15 minute drive, and take the foot ferry across the bay to Bremerton. If it is the weekend, parking is not a problem, and you have the choice of staying later in Seattle and catching one of the late ferries back to Bremerton. If you use the foot ferry, you have to be back in time for the last foot ferry, which is about 9PM. The only disappointment was the lack of any outside space for sitting or eating. A picnic table on the side lawn would have been great! All in all, we loved our say here, found Andy very friendly and helpful, and would gladly stay here again if we were in the area.

We loved the beautiful view from the windows and the twice daily playing of the national anthem.

Nice place and nice location, with a couple of things to beware of.

  • 3 of 5

We had a good time staying here while spending time with family during our granddaughters wedding festivities. Took the ferry into Seattle to meet our niece at Pike place Market, for lunch.

The accommodations were clean and tidy and had all the amenities we expected.

We were there July 5th - 12th and 5 out of the 7 days it was over 80 degrees in the house (no air conditioning). Andy was nice enough to bring over additional fans, which helped a bit with the heat, but made it difficult for conversation or TV.

Something that should be mentioned is the fact that the climb from street level to the house is a bit difficult for seniors. Winding and irregular height steps make navigating a bit of a challenge. Do to this we will not be returning.

Exceptional area for waterfront biking. Just 40 minutes by bike to Manchester Park with stunning views all the way. The local foot ferry delivers you to the Bremerton/Seattle ferry (drive on or walk aboard), which travels to downtown Seattle just two blocks from Pike Street Market, downtown shopping, Seattle Art Museum, Benaroya Hall, theater. If you kayak or surf try Crescent Beach just a couple hours away on the Hood Canal. For stunning mountain views drive 90 minutes to Hurrican Ridge and relax at the visitor center or do an easy hike.
