Description

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday home in Plymouth - Cottage At Trails End

Lakefront, 4 Bed's, 3 Bath's, Outdoor Shower / Changing Area, Fire Pit / Patio

The house is a renovated antique cottage tastefully done to maintain its original Cape Cod appeal and 'vacation cottage' feel. It has 4 bedrooms including 2 with queen size beds and 2 bedrooms with twin beds upstairs. There are 3 bathrooms (1 full and 2 half) and a brand new detached cedar outdoor hot water shower with changing area.

The outside living space includes 2 mahogany decks and a stone patio & fire pit with an elevated panoramic view of the lake and plenty of seating. The lot is 4 acres offering plenty of privacy, giving you that remote Vermont / Maine feel with the added benefit of cape cod beaches, entertainment and restaurants right at your doorstep!

Electronic entertainment features include (2) flat screen TV’s with cable in the living room and basement “boat bar” (my favorite room), and of course the built in wireless SONOS sound system with 4 individual zones (living room, fire pit, beach and boat bar). This system allows you to play anything you want, anywhere using your personal phone or device. Wifi / internet access is also provided.

The view is panoramic and stunning as the house is located at the water’s edge and is elevated. Access to the private sandy beach and dock is via a lighted teak stairway. The lake is fully recreational so if you want to bring your water toys, there is a brand new 70FT dock to tie up to with power and water available right at the dock. Or feel free to take the kayaks out for a relaxing paddle around the lake whenever you get the urge.

The lake is 3 miles long and about 50 Feet deep in the middle. It’s the last stop on the herring run before the herring return to the Cape Cod Canal every spring after a long journey upstream (unfortunately for many, only to get eaten by the striped bass and blue fish waiting for them). The inlet to the lake is located on the very North end, the outlet on the South end near the boat ramp.

This lake is not really a “vacation spot”. Most people live here and work on weekdays. That means that during the week, the activity level on the water is very low - very peaceful. One of the best areas to swim is at the large shallow sand bar on the South end.

The Mass Maritime training facility (Hartford Sailing Center) is also on the lake, where they teach sailing and use exact scale model merchant ships to teach the students how to navigate large ships.

Wildlife is everywhere including deer & wild turkey. If you’re a bird lover just grab a cup of coffee, sit quietly and enjoy the show. If you like to fish and catch bass (large and small mouth), it’s almost too easy using the right bait. We hear there are more challenging species out there as well including lake trout, which we have never been skilled (or lucky) enough to land.

There is also great salt water fishing available near by along the cape cod canal and the Scusset beach jetty's & fishing pier. You can actually get to the canal or Scusset on bike (mountain style, some roads unpaved) right from the house.

About Michael Kjelgaard

I own an engineering consulting firm and I am not a real estate professional. I have a wife of 20 plus years, two teenagers and a yellow lab that loves to dive for rocks on the lake bottom. We have lived in New England all of our lives and don't think we would ever leave the area. We live in Easton MA, only 45 minutes away from the cottage. So we are available to respond quickly if any problems arise during your stay.

Michael Kjelgaard purchased this house in 2011

Why Michael Kjelgaard chose South Shore Massachusetts

We bought the house in 2011 and our family has enjoyed it immensely. We plan on keeping it forever. Its the perfect location for a vacation home given that we live 45 minutes away and can get there whenever we want to.

We decided to offer it up for rent seasonally because the kids are getting older and have other responsibilities and social lives that sometimes don't always allow for multiple long stays at the cottage. So instead of letting it just sit there when we are not there, why not offer it up to others?

The location is absolutely ideal for so many reasons. If you have been to Cape Cod before, you are likely familiar with the infamous bridge traffic (sometimes for miles), or even the bumper to bumper traffic just driving around the Cape. Our house is located very near the canal on the mainland side of the bridges ('off Cape') and you can get to the house through back roads (we will provide specific directions), completely avoiding bridge traffic. In addition, living on this side of the bridge allows you to plan your trips 'on Cape' strategically to avoid the busiest of times.

The house is just about half way between Boston and Provincetown (the very tip of the Cape), realistically opening up many options to explore historic Massachusetts in day trips if desired. Boston is an hour drive North (with no traffic). Venturing into Boston is best done on a weekend or after 10am on weekdays to avoid rush hour.

Down town Plymouth Harbor is only 20 minutes away, offering many sites and activities including whale watching, deep sea fishing, (Captain Johns), Plimouth Plantation, Plymouth Rock, The Mayflower and all kinds of water front restaurants and antique shops.

If you want to go to the beach without crossing the bridge there are a handful of awesome beaches with plenty of parking to check out just minutes away (Scusset, Onset, Sagamore). For the kids – the Water Wiz water park (featured in the recent movie Way Way Back) is also minutes away.

Scusset beach is located at the canal inlet, has plenty of parking and is a great beach to spend the day. It also offers great salt water fishing from the jetty and a fishing pier located in the canal. Scusset is about a 5-10 minute drive. You can also get there on bike traveling along the scenic Cape Cod Canal bike & walking trail (about a 30 minute bike ride to Scusset starting from the house). The bike ride from the house is for adults only as the ride requires about a mile along the main road and a mountain style bike to navigate some unpaved and steep hills near the house. If you have small children and/or road style bikes its best to park at the canal public parking area and start the ride there. Our shed has plenty of space to store your bikes.

Of course going 'On Cape' opens you up to some of the best beaches in the world. You can even ferry out of Woods Hole (and take your car with you) to explore Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket for a day or more. Don't miss the free Oceanographic Museum at Wood's Hole; where you can picnic outdoors while enjoying the ship scenery, live seal shows and even a hands-on area.

Other possibilities include world class golf courses, wineries and all kinds of restaurants & dining experiences both on and off the Cape. Of course spending quality down time at the lake house is a must - you may even find that after showing up to the cottage and settling in, that you don't want to leave!
