About Olga

Steve has lived in the Valley all his life and is the owner/operator of Home Grown Lumber, selling custom flooring, siding, mantels and tables. Olga's family built a second home here in the early 1950's and she moved to the area permanently in 1971. She recently retired from the Conway Public Library after working there since 1990. She plays guitar and is a storyteller and writer of fiction. She speaks French and ein bischen Deutsch.

Olga purchased this chateau / country house in 1976

Why Olga chose Madison

SHORT ANSWER: Outstanding view of mountains and Silver Lake; secluded location at the end of a dirt driveway; inside tips from the local owners, who live on site.

LONG ANSWER: Highfields was originally a log home built by Steve and Olga with friends in 1979. The 36-acre lot was heavily forested with old stone walls as the only testimony to the pastures of the 1800s. Over the years Steve has reclaimed 14 acres of field, opening up the view and creating an exclusive house site. Six years ago during extensive renovations, the logs were faced with old Montreal brick and a master bedroom addition was constructed on the first floor, freeing up the entire second story of the house for guest quarters. A second story deck was added, too. It has the best view on the property. Beautiful examples of Steve's wood products manufactured locally at Home Grown Lumber are evident in the second story renovations from the King Size bed in the master bedroom to the new floors, wainscoting and entryway, which is floor-to-ceiling red pine.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Since the owners spend their evenings in the downstairs addition on the northwest side of the house, upstairs guests rarely hear them, except when Olga is cooking in the kitchen, which is directly below the upstairs kitchen. Guests enjoy the privacy of their own apartment in a quiet location with no other houses in sight.

However, if you want some INSIDER INFORMATION about the area from long-time locals, Steve and Olga are home most evenings and are happy to share their knowledge over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. We know some terrific restaurants, routes to avoid traffic (especially in summer and fall!), good hikes and great beaches. Summer guests, please ask about the BEACH PASS for Silver Lake as it is only open to residents and their guests. We have a pass for you. The lake is a 10-minute drive on back roads. It has a gorgeous view, kid-friendly beach with tables and barbecue (charcoal) facilities, bathrooms and changing areas, a dock for good swimmers, and clear water off a sandy beach (rocks as you go deeper).

Winter guests can enjoy King Pine Ski Area 5 minutes down the road. Ask about snowmobile excursions, too! Our neighbors Ken and Paula Sweet do half-day and full-day trips right from your door with everything provided - Sweet Ride Snowmobiles. Cross country, sledding and snowshoeing is great right out your door, too - we live on a hill!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much Olga and Steve for the wonderful experience. Your home is a phenomenal, immaculate getaway. It is a great area to explore. The shops, the food and the quiet nights are all amazing. The mountains are exquisite and the sunsets are to die for. You're hospitality is like none other we have experienced. Hope to see you again. I would recommend Hobbs Tavern to any visitor. The blueberries from the neighbors are the best around. Thank you so much for your time and kindness.

Great place

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed a week long vacation here for 2 summers in a row; that is how enjoyable it is. As so many others have mentioned, the view alone is superlative and it can be enjoyed through a cleverly placed window right above the comfortable king-size bed or on the covered, screened in balcony/room which is a brilliant idea. You can enjoy the fields and the mountains in any weather without being disturbed by insects.A barbeque that is so immaculately clean that I thought it was brand new is also here to enjoy.

You don't see any neighbours from the property and Olga and Steve who live downstairs are very friendly and helpful. The apartment has a separate entrance so there is privacy as well. You are not far from many great hikes and North Conway.

There is good value here too; you get premium cable TV (although why would you be watching much TV in such a beautiful spot?), internet, lovely apartment with beautiful wood throughout, great kitchen with everything you need and in good condition, for the price of an average motel room. Extra bonus points for not charging a pet fee!

Great lawn game equipment is also available; play croquet or bocce with a beautiful mountain vista in the background. Enjoy reading in the hammock. Wild blueberry picking and swimming are about a 10 minute drive away.

It is so nice to be able to afford such a great holiday, not everyone can afford to rent a $250 dollar a night home and this place offers everything you could need.

The attention to detail, the cleanliness, the quick response to queries, everything adds up to a vacation rental done right. Bravo. Hope this place is available for years to come. Love Highfields, love New Hampshire and its wonderful motto: Live Free or Die!

Lovely all the way

  • 5 of 5

My Wife and I spent our Honeymoon here, and it was just what we were looking for. Beautiful, serene, peaceful, quiet. We wanted a place where we could just relax and be still, spend time in nature etc.. and we wanted a place where we could bring our dog. Like so many others have commented, our dog Ziggy was in heaven. We had great weather and watched incredible sunsets every night.

Our one concern in booking this place was a potential lack of privacy, but this was a total non-issue. We didn't see Olga (or Steve) often, but she was kind enough to bring us some fresh veggies from the garden, and even left us a bottle of Champagne with some chocolates. We were very pleased.

We would definitely come back , and happily recommend this place to anyone.

The pictures do not do it justice. The apartment is bigger and nicer than it appears in the advertisement, and the view just has to be seen in person!

Best Regards!

Chadley & Nikki Kolb

What an amazing place. The owner, Olga, was warm and welcoming. The apartment was even more quaint and beautiful than the pictures. Had such a nice three day stay. Would go back in a heartbeat and plan on doing so!!!!

Great location and view. The apartment is adequate.

  • 4 of 5

We'd recommend this property for location, views and hot tub but there were some things about the apartment we didn't like. Soundproofing is poor between the rental unit above and the innkeepers below. Voices can be heard from the first floor and we tried not to make much noise either. Also the back of the house doesn't get much natural light so it's cool and dark. We had to keep the lights on in the kitchen which is small and the second bathroom. The main big bed is terrific but in common space with the tv so it feels like a studio. No going to bed until both are ready. The main bathroom has saloon type swinging doors so privacy is lacking. There was always internet available but we had to daily ask Olga to reboot.

Olga and Steve were available and respected our privacy so living in close quarters other than the sound was fine. It's at least 20 minutes to get groceries so that is a factor. Also there is no washer or dryer. We were there for 11 days so some of these concerns wouldn't be a problem for a short stay.

THE most incredible views of mountains.

  • 5 of 5

Olga and Steve have to be THE best hosts. We recommend their rooms as the perfect home away from home. You will not be disappointed! We had a fire every night in the fire pit outside and watched sunsets sink behind the mountains. We even had a hot tub to enjoy a glass of wine and admire the vast array of stars. We just loved it! And it was only a 5 minute drive from family farm.
