Please read our reviews. Our guests all say the photos don't do the place justice and routinely give Highfields 5 star reviews.
Steve has lived in the Valley all his life and is the owner/operator of Home Grown Lumber, selling custom flooring, siding, mantels and tables. Olga's family built a second home here in the early 1950's and she moved to the area permanently in 1971. She recently retired from the Conway Public Library after working there since 1990. She plays guitar and is a storyteller and writer of fiction. She speaks French and ein bischen Deutsch.
Olga purchased this chateau / country house in 1976
SHORT ANSWER: Outstanding view of mountains and Silver Lake; secluded location at the end of a dirt driveway; inside tips from the local owners, who live on site.
LONG ANSWER: Highfields was originally a log home built by Steve and Olga with friends in 1979. The 36-acre lot was heavily forested with old stone walls as the only testimony to the pastures of the 1800s. Over the years Steve has reclaimed 14 acres of field, opening up the view and creating an exclusive house site. Six years ago during extensive renovations, the logs were faced with old Montreal brick and a master bedroom addition was constructed on the first floor, freeing up the entire second story of the house for guest quarters. A second story deck was added, too. It has the best view on the property. Beautiful examples of Steve's wood products manufactured locally at Home Grown Lumber are evident in the second story renovations from the King Size bed in the master bedroom to the new floors, wainscoting and entryway, which is floor-to-ceiling red pine.
Since the owners spend their evenings in the downstairs addition on the northwest side of the house, upstairs guests rarely hear them, except when Olga is cooking in the kitchen, which is directly below the upstairs kitchen. Guests enjoy the privacy of their own apartment in a quiet location with no other houses in sight.
However, if you want some INSIDER INFORMATION about the area from long-time locals, Steve and Olga are home most evenings and are happy to share their knowledge over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. We know some terrific restaurants, routes to avoid traffic (especially in summer and fall!), good hikes and great beaches. Summer guests, please ask about the BEACH PASS for Silver Lake as it is only open to residents and their guests. We have a pass for you. The lake is a 10-minute drive on back roads. It has a gorgeous view, kid-friendly beach with tables and barbecue (charcoal) facilities, bathrooms and changing areas, a dock for good swimmers, and clear water off a sandy beach (rocks as you go deeper).
Winter guests can enjoy King Pine Ski Area 5 minutes down the road. Ask about snowmobile excursions, too! Our neighbors Ken and Paula Sweet do half-day and full-day trips right from your door with everything provided - Sweet Ride Snowmobiles. Cross country, sledding and snowshoeing is great right out your door, too - we live on a hill!
Thank you so much Olga and Steve for the wonderful experience. Your home is a phenomenal, immaculate getaway. It is a great area to explore. The shops, the food and the quiet nights are all amazing. The mountains are exquisite and the sunsets are to die for. You're hospitality is like none other we have experienced. Hope to see you again. I would recommend Hobbs Tavern to any visitor. The blueberries from the neighbors are the best around. Thank you so much for your time and kindness.
Our family stayed 6 nights for February vacation and had a great time. It was quiet, extremely clean, and spacious. Just minutes to King Pine, and only a short drive to North Conway. The hosts were very gracious and Olga offered helpful suggestions about the area and a warm welcome. Thank you!
We drove all the way from Chicago, the drive was unpleasant. We encountered huge snow storm and heavy rains that lasted hours. We highly recommend listening to Olga's directions because google maps will not help.
Here are the great points of our stay:
- The view of the mountain is incredible! Especially from the master bedroom. You wake up with the mountaintop starring at you.
- The condo we stayed in has its own entrance.
- The terrace is an excellent place to relax and grill after a long day of skiing and snowboarding.
- This place is very dog friendly. There is so much land for him to run around and play off leash.
It is definitely the best place to "recharge the battery" and reunite with nature! Steve and Olga are amazing people who would make you feel like home away from home! We would love to come back in summer time!
We were more than impressed by our stay at Olga's place. The pictures don't do it justice! Much roomier than it looked. Kitchen was well stocked with more than essentials and plenty of room/utensils to cook full meals. We "stayed in" for 2 full days, just playing games and watching movies with the occasional walk in the snow and a few sled runs down the hill (sleds available to use). The other day we went to the local outlet malls in North Conway. We got about 20"+ of snow on our last night, but driveway was well plowed and easy to exit. Stairs to apartment are not exposed to elements and not a problem. Loved our stay and the beautiful woodwork within and the views outside. Definitely recommend.
OLGA AND STEVE ARE THE BEST.
KIND, OPEN, RESPECTFUL, WARM AND WELCOMING.
THE SETTING IS AWESOME. ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND EXPANSIVE IN THE AREA.
THE HOUSING IS EVERYTHING YOU NEED. COMFORTABLE. RELAXING, WELCOMING, RESTFUL.
DOG & KID HEAVEN TOO.
SO SAFE I LEFT MY KEYS IN CAR UNLOCKED WITH OUT A THOUGHT OR WORRY.
MY DAUGHTER AND I WANT TO COME BACK IN THE WINTER. IT WILL BE AMAING.
A LOVELY, LOVELY PLACE WITH LOVELY LOVELY HOSTS. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Olga and Steve's home will make you feel like you are at home, so much that you won't want to leave.
The house is clean, the linens are comfortable, and the kitchen is stocked with anything you'd need.
The view...well really that is all you need to be sold. Add in that there is a screened in porch with mountain views to sip coffee, read, and have meals on and you think it can't be topped....however watch the sunset from the hot tub and the day is complete perfection. There is a firepit and Olga even provided us with ingredients for smore's.
Many hiking trails are within an hour drive. Silver Lake nearby is great for an afternoon of reading and swimming. Large grocery stores found easily in Conway and many farm stands.
Ask Olga for any recommendations on your desired vacation and she will go above and beyond to help you have the best stay possible.
Enjoy and soak in the view!
My friend and I and my dog Halli stayed at Highfields recently while we were exploring the White Mountains and hiking Mount Washington. Olga and Steve are very friendly and helpful, but never intrusive. The house and grounds were immaculate. We enjoyed the amazing mountain views and sunsets every day, loved exploring the property and walking to the pond so my dog could swim (my dog found a porcupine in the stone wall; thankfully that ended without mishap!). We were serenaded by coyotes every day although we never saw them. The screened porch was a perfect place to rest after a long day of hiking and to sit and enjoy breakfast and dinner each night. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.
Highfields in winter is spectacular. You will be cozy with our wood furnace heat. There are also many trails accessible right from our door for cross country and snowshoe enthusiasts. Also great sledding, as we live on a hill.Downhill skiing is as close as 5 minutes (King Pine Ski Area) with larger areas like Cranmore Mt., Attitash and Wildcat half an hour's drive away. Enjoying a hot toddy or cup of tea by the outdoor fireplace as the sun sets is always a treat.
