Canoeing, kayaking, swimming, campfires and ice skating make this home ideal for a summer or winter family vacation. Downhill skiing in the winter and fine dining and world class cultural events in the summer are just a few of the local attractions.
Originally built around the turn of the century, we modernized the cottage to accommodate our growing family and endless guests. Two family rooms (one with a fireplace, one with a tv), a large deck, a 12' dining table, four bedrooms, including a bunk room plus an extra sleep loft turn this cozy cottage into an accommodation for two families with a gang of kids. The ambience is part Ralph Lauren and part 'On Golden Pond'; a place where everyone feels at home. It's where life-long memories have been made. We invite you to make a few of your own.
PS. If its just for the two of you, all the better ;)
I am an artist and a mother of three grown children.
Having grown up in Miami, I gravitate to property on the water as I have a view of the Hudson River from my NY home and views of Queechy Lake from all but one room of this 'cottage'.
Mary Ellen Scherl purchased this house in 1989
I went to camp in the Berkshires, so I have been fond of the area since I was a child.
Just two hours and change from Manhattan, this property offered our growing family the benefits of a wonderful lake house as well as the proximity to year-round cultural events and sporting activities. Whether boating, swimming, biking, campfires or just hanging out on the deck watching the light change on the water, there's nothing better than life on peaceful Queechy Lake. It's like camp! Only nicer...
The view from our home is all natural -- no houses across the lake, only tree blanketed hills. That makes this house truly unique, especially given its excellent Berkshire location.
We had a group of friends go for a long weekend. The space was great and the kitchen was perfect! We loved to use the canoes and kayaks, and the lake was just amazing. We can't wait to come back!
House and setting are lovely as others have reviewed. We had two issues that prevented us from giving 5 stars. 1) the house wasn't fully cleaned before our arrival. The bedrooms were fine but there were dirty towels hanging up in the baths and kitchen, dirty dishes in the sink and dirty towels in and draped over the washer. So, upon arrival we had to do dishes and laundry first thing, which was kind of a drag. 2) Be advised that upstairs hallway bath plumbing leaks through the ceiling onto the main level. This appears to have been going on for some time, as there were marks on the living room ceiling and floor. (We have young kids and this is the only tub in the house with a stopper for tub bathing.) We informed the owner of these issues immediately via email and never got a response. The lake is beautiful but not the best spot for wading or swimming unless you like mud, snail shells, aquatic vegetation, etc. The dock is great for canoe/kayak launch.
We just returned from a 3 day get-away. There were 7 adults, 8 young people age 12-21 and a 6 month old baby. The house was very well equipped, laid out so you could get away from others if desired. We enjoyed the lake and the kayaks. The fishermen even caught fish tho' not to keep. the outlets were close by as was a craft fair. Most of the time we stayed at the house and enjoyed the surrounding. I can't think of anything we lacked. My first encounter with VRBO and HomeAway was very positive. Mary Ellen was reachable by e-mail for the questions I had. I would recommend this get-away without reservation although it would be difficult for handicapped individuals.
This beautiful home was perfect for our family reunion! The house was charming with plenty of room for everyone. There were plenty of activities to keep everyone busy and night time fun with games by the fire. It was wonderful and we look forward to renting again and again!
Just a lovely, lovely place. Off the beaten path just enough, but close enough for a quick trip to quaint small towns nearby. The property itself is fantastic. Well maintained, clean, lots of personality, with just about everything you could ask for! The lake is lovely, too, although a little seaweed-y by the house to swim in. But you can drive or kayak over to the beach nearby and its much clearer.
Our group of 3 families (6 adults, 4 kids) had a great long winter weekend here. Loved the fact it was right on the lake with a great view from the kitchen window. The house is very well equipped - we cook a lot and kitchen had plenty of everything - plates, pans, casseroles, baking dishes, knives etc. no need to bring anything. Also loved the long dining table that could seat 10 easily, and one night friends came so we had 14 without a problem.
Loved snowshoeing on the frozen lake, although was slightly hard to tell how thick the ice was as the weather had started getting warmer and there were no ice fishermen out, but it was fine. Very peaceful.
House is very comfortable, plenty of towels, linens etc. Kids loved loft beds. Fire worked well. Was nice to have the second living room with the TV in it separate from the main living / dining area.
Imagine its great in summer too. Mary Ellen was very responsive and helpful. Only thing is that in winter the driveway gets icy - we had chains so were OK as was the 4 wheel drive car but the other car in our party couldn't get out one day.
Summer in the Berkshires is known for Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, Berkshire and Williamstown Theater Festivals, and many more cultural events. Jiminy Peak has alpine slides and other fun activities
MassMoCA is nearby.
In the winter, it's just a short ride to Jiminy Peak for snow skiing or a little longer to Butternut.
