Overview

About the property

6300 sq ft private home on 3 private acres, 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms & sleeps 10

This historic five bedroom house also accommodates 4 to 6 people for a lower rate can reserve on listing # 992258. is set on 3 private acres surrounded by woods on two sides and pine trees on one side secluding it from other properties. The house has been carefully renovated throughout the years with much attention to detail. The vintage feel has been preserved and modern amenities were added throughout. The two newly built wings within the last ten years provide a private courtyard surrounding the main house and boasts a beautiful horseshoe perennial garden in the spring, summer and fall. There are plenty of rooms to congregate with friends or family as well as cozy nooks and crannies to explore with friends or to be alone. There is a large deck on the property connected to the master bedroom by a staircase on the first floor. All antique floors in the house are either original or purchased during construction of the added wings. There are comforts of a modern heating and cooling systems.

The house has 5 bedrooms in total: one queen size bed in the master bedroom with French doors overlooking the gardens. There is a staircase going out to the deck in the warmer weather. The second bedroom on this floor has a twin bed with access to a full bath off the kitchen. Upstairs there are three bedrooms: Two bedrooms have a full bed; and le petite boudoir has 2 twin beds. I call this my grandchild room. These bedrooms will sleep (9) people. Additionally there is a cot which can accommodate 10 in total. The master bedroom has its own bathroom including a shower. Each bedroom upstairs is adjacent to two (2) full bathrooms. In total there are four complete bathrooms. There is also a fully equipped laundry room in the hallway of the master wing.

The chef / gourmet kitchen has high end appliances including a Viking range, a Miele oven and Miele microwave/oven. It is fully equipped for cooking and perfect for those guests who love to cook and enjoy great food. The eat in kitchen adjoins a sitting room which has a large stone fireplace and French doors which overlook the horseshoe garden.

The sun room also has two sets of French doors that have sun streaming in the windows in the winter as well as heat and a gas stove. Outside the sun room is a retractable awning overlooking the brick patio and gardens should the sun be too strong in the warm weather while sitting inside or outside. Above the two car garage is a large game room with a ping pong table and ping pong accessories. There is also a 55 inch TV in the game room. The dining room table seats 8 people. Both leaves have been added. The living room is spacious and also has a small fireplace. We have Wifi, cable TV, some board games and books are everywhere on the numerous book shelves in the various rooms. Outside of the kitchen entry is a small round table with two chairs to enjoy the garden in the summer.

A tower for cell service has been erected in a adjacent area. But at this point only At&T phones will work in our area plus some others. Our telephone will be available for both local and long distance calls. Only calls outside the US will be charged and subtracted from the security deposit which will be returned within seven (7) days if no damage has been incurred. Our upstairs over the garage is a gorgeous game room which has a ping pong table and large TV.

Check in: normally at your request so let us know what works best for you.

Departure: normally at your request, unless other vacationers are arriving the next day. Then we would need time to clean the house before the next guests arrive. There is a minimum stay of 3 nights but we will consider 2 nights, just ask.

We chose to locate in the Red Hook / Rhinebeck area, both are about 20 minutes away, because of the proximity to so many interesting small towns with great restaurants conveniently located in any direction that one wishes to go. The Taconic Parkway entrance which could take you to NYC is only 3/4 a mile from the house. Should you need a meal close by, The Stissing House in Pine Plains, built in the late 1800's, is perhaps the best restaurant in the area serving both lunch and dinner on weekends. It is only 10 minutes away. And one should not miss dining at The Culinary Institute in Hyde Park that is approximately a 30 minute drive. You must make reservations before coming to the area in order to get a table. While in Hyde Park you might like to see some historical sights. Both the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt mansions are in Hyde Park. Other mansions to see, if starting from the Red Hook area, are Mills Mansion in Staatsburg; Wildenstein in Rhinebeck; Samuel Morse, who invented the Morse code in Poughkeepsie; and the Fisher Performing Arts Center at Bard College. Both children and adults will enjoy the Rhinebeck Aerodrome featuring old airplanes that actually still fly. If you like hiking, Poet's Walk is only 15 minutes away. At the end of your walk you will be at the Hudson River. Or you can climb Stissing Mountain in Pine Plains or walk around Thompson Pond instead of climbing the mountain.

If you love searching for the perfect antique, Hudson is the town to explore, about 20 minutes away. In the summer, Grieg farm has picking times to enjoy strawberries and other fruits. The Millbrook Winery has a tasting room which offers lunch and dinner and can certainly delight your palette. And across the street from the house is the Roejan Creek. If you brought a fishing pole, you can spend many hours fishing along the edge of the water across our street. In the summer Wilcox Park on 199 has a pool with a sandy beach and the Taghkanic State Park off the Taconic Parkway has a beautiful lake to swim in with a picnic area. In the winter skiing is available at Catamount Mountain which is about 30 minutes away. Further north are other ski resorts.

Maps will be available for you to locate all these sights.

About Mara Marrero

I have a university degree in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in Marketing. My interests are reading, decorating my house with antiques and putting my personality into it. I lived in France for three years and took many lessons in French cooking. I used to love to cook and entertain when I was younger, but less so now. While in France we traveled to Russia, Austria and Germany as well as England and Italy. I loved the European way of life. I love animals and we have rescued a Bichon Frisee from a shelter in Philadelphia. She is the love of my life. I have also done some charitable work in Rhinebeck in a Food Bank while living in Red Hook before we moved to Poughkeepsie, New York where we live now since May of 2013. I love classical music and opera. But since leasing our new car and listening to Elvis on Sirius radio, I have become fixated on that channel. I do believe that no matter what one's age, there is always a place in your heart for Elvis. My partner Dale Mitchell has a graduate degree in math from the University of Arizona and was a math teacher in a private school in Kent, Connecticut. After leaving Kent School, he built high end solar homes in Kent, Connecticut. After that project he built another business called New England Wholesale Hardwoods, which he sold to his son. His interests include design and construction and planting and caring for our perennial garden. Before we retired in 2010, we were partners in another business that he created called Antique & Vintage Woods of America. We used our house as a showroom for architects and designers to see the different species of flooring both used in various rooms as well as hand hewn beams installed throughout our house. The massive beams in the master bedroom were pilings submerged in the Baltimore Harbor. Our house exemplifies the contemporary design concepts of Recycle, Re-Use and Re-Purpose. Embrace the past to enrich the future.

Mara Marrero purchased this house in 1995

Why Mara Marrero chose Hudson Valley

We bought this property because of the history of the house which when purchased was only 1500 SF. In the 1700's, Jackson Corners road was the dirt road leading to Albany, the state capital. The stage coach used to drop off or pick up people going to different areas. It is that history which captured our imagination. We kept the original house as is with updated amenities and added three wings which gave us a large master bedroom wing, a sun room, a new kitchen, beautiful gardens and a two car garage with a large game room above the garage. We enjoy the total privacy of our three acre plus land knowing that our house still retains some of the historical aspects of the late 1700's.

What makes this house unique

The unique benefits that are important to us is having retained some of the history of the house yet having built wings that allow people to gather together or find private areas to be alone in the house or on the outside patios or deck or screened porch. Big pine trees block the only house on the driveway side. So there is so much privacy on our three acre property including the beautiful horseshoe garden surrounding both wings that were constructed. And with these benefits, are new heating and cooling systems for comfort in all seasons.

1756 House is a lovely historic property

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at 1756 House. The setting is welcome, serene and lovely. For our family of 6 adults there was plenty of space to spread out, read a good book, do some painting and just enjoy the historic beauty of the home. The kitchen and bathrooms are modern and beautifully done. The kitchen had just about everything this family of experienced cooks needed. The nearby farmer's markets supplied the rest. We had wonderful dinners on the patio surrounded by a gorgeous mature garden dotted with darling hummingbirds. Lake Taghanic State Park is a 10 minute drive. We enjoyed lots of hiking and swimming in the park. Rhinebeck is 20 minute drive and fun to explore with numerous shops and restaurants. We would easily return to 1756 House for another vacation!

Overall, very good

  • 4 of 5

Our guests and ourselves enjoyed the house. Charming and lots of room.

The stairs to the second floor were a challenge for our older guests and we had to rearrange sleeping quarters, as a result.

We didn't cook much, but that was not because the facilities were not there. They were great.

Wonderful Christmas stay .

  • 5 of 5

My family of ten, including two grandchildren, had a very cheerful holiday in this country estate.

The house is large while remaining cozy, very warm and has a great kitchen for gathering together.

Plenty of room to be alone, with a great-room of windows to bird watch and watch the kids sled on the hillside.

We had many delicious meals and created many wonderful memories. The bedrooms were comfortable, the game room fun, we played lots of ping pong, and having a washer/dryer made the stay better.

Everything you need is there, pots, pans, dishes, linens, games, etc.

I highly recommend this property. It is amazing! And in a beautiful area near many lakes.

Three families

  • 5 of 5

We met our daughters, their spouses and young children at this beautiful country estate for a long weekend celebration. I would like to say we took advantage of the area and with sightseeing and and exploring the multitude of dining experiences. We didn't. We did not want to leave the house and grounds. From breakfast cooked on the outside griddle, eaten at the large patio table to dinners in the room, to ping pong tournament to races on the lawn. Why go elsewhere? Each family had a private bath and room, and there are many many rooms. Wonderful!

Comfortable home and beautiful gardens for extended family vacation.

  • 5 of 5

We loved the combination of modern comfort and historical detail in this country home. It was perfect for our family gathering to celebrate Bard's graduation. The hosts were attentive and thought of everything, even leaving us two bottles of wine.

There is so much to see and do in the area and this home is perfectly situated.
