The house is in the most south-western part of Ireland, close to the village of Schull. It is right in front of the Atlantic Ocean with views of the world famous Fastnet Lighthouse, as well as a 4000 year old stone tomb. Across the house, there is an intimate sand beach. The house is cosy and comfortable. It has two floors and features open fires, handmade oak and pine furniture, black natural stone slabs and Persian carpets. Under floor heating, bathrooms en suite, reading room, open fire sitting area and conservatory offer space and comfort to relax. The house has several rooms but is ideal for two people. There is a living room with wooden beam ceiling, open fire and a natural stonewall, a meditation room with a massage bed and a master bedroom with en-suite bath. The large handmade pitch-pine kitchen, glass conservatories, fireplace and reading area are also charming. You have ocean view from every room. CD, DVD and book library are available. No kids.
Private and authentic Atmosphere: This house has a very special personal and charming touch and atmosphere. The owner is using it himself on a regular basis and it is very different from a typical holiday rental cottage. Everything is real and authentic. You will find handmade furniture, Persian Carpets, very expensive HiFi system, huge library with books in several languages, art, several hundred CDs and DVDs. The owner is traveling quite a bit and the house is full with little things from all over the word. There is a little video a guest made, you can watch it at youtube if you search for 'Toormore'
Remote and quiet: The house is very remote. In front of the house is a garden with palm trees, fuchsia, escalinoa. The Gulfstream creates a very mild climate and we never have snow. This allows a very sumptuous vegatation. Every room has ocean view and you can see the famous 'Fastnet' lighthouse. A sheltered intimate sand beach is in front of the house. From the guestroom and the meditation room upstairs you can see the 'Standing Stones'. At night, you only hear the waves of the ocean. And sometimes a fox. In fact, the fox as well as Likker and Honey, our cats, might even pay you a visit.
How it all began: Over 15 years ago the owner, an international working artist came to work on an art project in the Southwest of Ireland. Finding peace and serenity and a refined lifestyle which can only be found in a few places on earth, he built his dream house in a very special location. The house is on an elevated piece of land and overlooks the Atlantic, a stone tomb und the bay. Quite an unique combination of endless blue, space and a feeling of longing to be far away --created by the ocean-- yet at the same time the feeling of being at home, protected and sheltered --created by the bay and the cliffs-- had a very strong impact on him and he fell in love immediately. In Toormore he found a place where one can still discover secret places, be enchanted by the grace of thousand year old forests and explore ancient castles and stone circles. Here where people still take the time to chat, it is possible to withdraw from the hectic modern life and to relax, be creative or even find oneself.
Denise is the 'soul' of the house and it is she you will meet when you arrive in Toormore. She also will be there in case you need anything, be it help or advise. She also can give you some ideas on what to do or where to go.
At the end of the world, facing the Atlantic Ocean, very cozy. Not a typical holiday rental home as the owner is using the house himself. Filled with art, music, movies and books ... a real 'home away from home'.
We stayed two weeks at Toormore House enjoying perfectly restful sleep while a symphony of ocean, wind and birds drifted through our open windows. Toormore House is quiet and remote but only four miles from groceries, pubs and restaurants. In the surrounding area one can visit many megalithic monuments and burial sites. The seascapes and mountains are wonderful. Mizen Head and the Caha Pass are among the must see attractions a short drive away. The kitchen is well appointed and there is a good selection of music and DVDs. The seafood chowder at O'Sullivan's is remarkable. Mary Ann's in Castletownshend is a restaurant worth the drive. In Schull there's a grocery store, a good butcher and fresh fish market, as well as a Sunday Market offering locally grown vegetables, eggs, and cheeses. We didn't want to leave. Denise was supportive and helpful.
This was one of our favorite trips - thank you so much. Your house is beautiful and the view is spectacular. We made fires at night, listened to music (great choices) and didn't want to leave. Denise was terrific and everything was easy.
We fell in love with West Cork and are thinking about whether we might make the move there at some point. Incredibly beautiful place - with what seems, from what we can tell in a week, to have a lovely group of creative, interesting people.
This is the perfect place for a vacation. The pictures are completely accurate. It is in a stunning location and is a very beautiful well appointed property. Achim, the owner, has truly thought of everything to make this home
comfortable and a delight to return to from a day of touring. It is very well located. Isolated and very peaceful with breathtaking views, yet it is located only minutes away from Schull. This picturesque town provides every amenity you might need. Denise, who takes care of the property, is a complete gem and very accommodating. I would definitely recommend this properly to anyone interested in a relaxing and enjoyable retreat. We have stayed in houses throughout the world and this is definitely one of our favourites. We had a beautiful week in this gorgeous house! Everything was just perfect: the weather, the combination work-leisure, the afternoon trips with fantastic hikes (Crookhaven, Barley Cove, Mizen Head, The Old Castle, Glengariff, Bantry, Sheep's Head, Baltimore) the beautiful evenings, the restaurants (O Connery's in Crookhaven, The Three Castle Cafe, The Fish Kitchen in Bantry, Glebe Gardens in Baltimore)... our batteries are refilled!
This is a totally unique home designed and custom built by someone with a dazzling visual eye who appreciates the interplay of light, creature comforts, and
a stunning location. You can hear the ocean when the surf is up. Inside there is an artful subtle blend of middle eastern accents combined with gorgeous mood lighting and the extensive use of wood everywhere. Fabulous audio set-up, combined with tons of books, DVDs, CDs, and a fireplace.
Location is lovely. Private but minutes away from all of the villages dotting that beautiful coastline. Denise, the housekeeper was super helpful in every way. Car rental a must, and this was an ideal home for a couple, not really set-up for a family. But overall - idyllic and a hidden gem.
If you're thinking about having a home base for at least a week in West County Cork, Ireland, I highly recommend Toormore House. The description of the property was not only accurate but we think an understatement. The house is beautiful inside (with just about every amenity you can think of) and equally nice outside. Not only is it quiet at night (you can hear the waves across the road) but even in the daytime the only sounds were birds and distant cows.
The nearby town of Schull was fantastic. We enjoyed a couple nice meals there during our week-long stay, browsed the farmer's market enjoying samples of cheeses, meats and olives, and also found the fish market and meat market to cook some meals in our fully stocked kitchen.
Denise, the property manager, is a gem. She left us farm fresh eggs, brought us firewood for a cozy evening fire on a blustery night. And by the time we left we had become good friends with her and her husband.
Like I said at the beginning, Toormore is great as a home base. There is so much to see all within easy driving. Our favorites: Bantry's farmer's market on Fridays, the Beara Peninsula and Healy Pass, Dromberg Stone Circle, Bonane Heritage Park, and just about every town between Ballydehob and Clonakilty.
I can't say enough about the owner. Right from the beginning when we were considering his home he answered all my emails promptly and answered any questions I had. He is a gracious host and we hope to meet him in person some day to thank him.
Again, you can't go wrong selecting this special place in just about the most beautiful part of Ireland.
The house is located at the sunny South West Coast of Ireland, the most demanded area of Ireland. Cork airport is 50 miles away; the next little town (Schull) is 4 miles away. It is surrounded by unspoiled nature on several acres of own coastal land, right on the Atlantic Ocean. All you see from the windows is the sky and the blue of the water and the Fastnet Lighthouse. Because of the Gulf stream, the climate is mild (palm trees in front of the house) and most of the year is perfect for being outside. Because this area is highly sought after by tourists (a sailor’s paradise) the coastal towns are bursting with charming pubs, first class restaurants, little shops and activities. In short: If you want to withdraw and nourish your soul, be surrounded by cosy fireplaces, art, paintings, books, music and movies, handmade furniture, Persian carpets, gardens with palm trees, smell and feel nothing but the Ocean without seeing other houses around you, this is the perfect place.
