Taos adventures are infinite; whether it is exploring all the natural surroundings and outdoor activities all around the Taos Ski Valley or exploring the unique art and history of the town of Taos. There is so much to do all over the place. For many, however, coming to the Taos Ski Valley is all about the incredible skiing/boarding. This property is unique because lift# 4 / Kachina lift is just a 5 minute walk from the condo. You are able to skip the crowds and start your day on fresh “back side” snow. You will find that there is nothing like a Taos Ski Valley powder day.
In local folklore, the Taos Mountain has a sacred spirit. According to legend, if the mountain likes you, it will continue to draw you back and keep you. Come stay in this beautiful mountain condo and experience your Taos adventure. You never know, the Mountain might like you and you will be drawn back to Taos over and over again.
NOTE: Roads to the condo are well maintained in the summer and well plowed in the winter. However this condo is located at a high altitude in a heavy snow belt - a vehicle with either 4-wheel drive or AWD is required from November through April (chains are an alternative).
In the 80s my Mom, an avid skier, would visit a close friend in Taos every winter and she would talk about this incredible town with incredible skiing. I, of course, did not believe her. How could there be a great ski mountain in New Mexico? After graduating from college in the early 90s, not really knowing what I wanted to do with my life, I decided I wanted to take a year off. I was a big ski racer through high school, loved the outdoors and loved adventures so on my Mom’s recommendation I decided to try the Taos Ski Valley. Through a contact from my Mom’s friend, I got a job taking care of guests at a little chalet and guiding snow mobile tours for, at the time, a new operation. (The snow mobile and now also horseback riding tours are still being operated by my friend and old boss “Big Al” – A.A Taos Ski Valley Wilderness Adventures is a must do in the Taos Ski Valley.) It did not take long for me to get completely hooked. Back country skiing, tennis, white water kayaking and fly fishing were weekly activities for me. I worked hard and played even harder, skiing over 100 days each winter. I very quickly found out that my Mom was right. I found out what the locals already know; that the Taos Ski Valley is one of the premier ski mountains in the US and that the Taos Ski Valley is the Ski Industries’ best kept secret. I left the Taos Ski Valley after 2 winters but I knew I would be back.
Twenty years later, living on the East coast with my wife and 4 children, I want my family to experience Taos and the Taos Ski Valley. I still have dreams about the epic powder days I experienced in Taos and hoping I get to enjoy a few more in the near future.
Nick purchased this condo in 2013
One of the guests who stayed at the little chalet I was taking care of was a mother and her 28 year old son from Germany. They were so struck by the beauty of the mountains and old world charm of the Taos Ski Valley that the son wanted to make the Taos Ski Valley his home. My boss introduced them to the family that owned much of the vacant land in the Kachina area of the Taos Ski Valley. Over the next 3 weeks, he scouted all the land around the Kachina lift. I joined on many of these excursions and was completely mesmerized by the alpine environment, landscape and the 180 degree mountain views of the Kachina area of the Taos Ski Valley. My new friend, Thomas, eventually purchased the land where the Bavarian now sits and I convinced my family to join me in purchasing a building lot further down the hill towards the base area. Thomas spent the next several years building the Bavarian and has spent the last 17 years making the Bavarian Lodge and Restaurant into a truly special Taos Ski Valley Institution.
I have always felt a connection to the Kachina area of the Taos Ski Valley so when the opportunity arose to purchase a large condo unit in the Kachina area of the Taos Ski Valley, my wife and I took the plunge.
Late afternoon sun, amazing mountain views, and proximity to the Kachina lift make this large condo unique in the Taos Ski Valley but what makes this condo very special is all that surrounds the property.
We really enjoyed these accommodations during our ski trip. The owner was quick to reply by phone. The fireplace was great and provided movies were appreciated. Also, it's nice to be able to wash and dry clothes as needed. Heed the property description: there are 3 flights of stairs to climb - these iced over and we had no shovel to scrape them. There were a few frightening slips on these stairs. Four wheel drive (or chains) are necessary to get in and out of the Wheeler Peak area especially in snow and ice. We had hoped for the opportunity to ski from the area of the Bavarian, but the lift wasn't open during our time there. As such, the drive to the base of the ski village is about 10 mins, then we rented lockers to hold our stuff each day.
What an amazing experience. If you are looking for a condo with ski-in and ski-out capability, this is your place. There is a ski lift within walking distance. And the condo is awesome. The units are literally at the end of the road and you feel like you have the mountain to yourselves. The condo itself was also wonderful. It is so well furnished, with tons of towels, blankets, beds, pillows, and everything you'll need for the kitchen. Just pack your clothes, skis, and food, and you'll be all set! Two things to keep in mind, the nearest grocery store is about 30-40 minutes away, so make sure you have what you need. And also, you will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the condo during the winter months. Also, make time to have a meal at the famous Bavarian restaurant while you're there. It's an experience you will not soon forget and you can walk to it from the condo. Lastly, the owner was amazing to deal with. So professional and so available, when and if, you need anything! All in all, we loved our time at this rental and would definitely come back!!!
I was happy to find a VRBO in Taos Ski Valley that would accommodate 12 people. I belong to a hiking club in Colorado and it was easy to find 11 others who wanted to hike Mt. Wheeler and Gold Hill from Taos Ski Valley. The trailhead for the short route up to Mt. Wheeler is just a short walk from the condo. From the summit of Mt. Wheeler, we could look down and see the condo! That was kind of fun. We fixed three group breakfasts and two dinners at the condo and had everything we needed in the kitchen. One couple and three men slept downstairs; 7 women slept upstairs, no problem. (I brought a small backpacking air mattress from home and slept on that - which left more room for people to pile their gear and move around. Everyone else slept on the beds/hide-a-beds.) The owner was responsive to all questions. All in all, a great stay in a beautiful spot.
The location of this condo is great. 10-15 min from base camp (Early sept when it would rain occasionally so depending on road conditions, but 5 minutes from the Kachina ski lifts). Beautiful views from almost all rooms!
The condo was clean and well equipped with pretty much everything you will need for a short trip.
Overall a great stay!
The condo was very nice and spacious. The furnishings are a bit dated, but very functional. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking. Appliances were up-to-date and quite nice. Ski Valley is under quite a bit of construction, and a number of restaurants were closed. If you want groceries, get them before you leave Taos!! (same with gas). Owner was nice and responsive, but seemed a bit disorganized. All in all, a nice week.
For the outdoor enthusiasts, guests can enjoy the day hiking Wheeler Peak, snowmobiling/ horseback riding up and along Fraser Ridge with “Big Al.”, full moon hiking/snowshoeing to Williams Lake, hot air ballooning over the Rio Grande Gorge, white water rafting / kayaking the “Taos Box” on the Rio Grande, fly fishing the numerous local trout streams and rivers or skiing/boarding the world famous Taos Ski Valley. Taos Ski Valley is celebrated for its steeps, champagne powder, 300+ days of sun and its #1 ranked ski school.
For history and art enthusiasts, guests can visit the town of Taos, just 25 minutes down the canyon. Taos has over 100 art galleries and museums which show off the area’s rich Native American, late Spanish Colonial, and artistic histories. While in town, guests can visit the historic Taos Plaza for a meal or for shopping. A must see in Taos is the Taos Pueblo located at the base of the sacred Taos Mountain which has been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years and has been designated a World Heritage site.
For guests that want to be pampered, guests can visit the Edelweiss Lodge and Spa right in the Taos Ski Valley, El Monte Sagrado Resort and Spa in the town of Taos or a bit further away, the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa.
There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the Ski Valley and in the town of Taos, many highlighting Southwestern cuisine. The highly acclaimed Bavarian restaurant located at the base of the Kachina lift, a five minute walk from the condo is a must visit. Enjoy an exceptional authentic German meal for lunch or dinner or just relax with a German beer on the sun-drenched Bavarian deck after a long day of skiing.
