About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, 10 Sleeps

Situated at just over 10,000 feet, a short distance from the Kachina lift, Bavarian Restaurant and the Phoenix Lodge, nestled in the natural surroundings of the spectacular Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, this large, 3 bedroom, 3rd and 4th floor condo is the perfect place for you to experience endless possibilities of outdoor activities right at your doorstep.

Radiant floor heating throughout the condo provides comfortable warmth to the large open space. The open concept kitchen features GE stainless steel appliances, gas stove, granite counter tops and plenty of counter space for cooking for large groups. Just outside the main living area is a large deck/balcony with a new stainless steel gas barbeque grill. The deck is a perfect place to relax, soak in the sun and enjoy the 180 degree mountain views of the ski slopes, Kachina Mountain, and mountains of the Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area. Because of the condo’s position in the valley and facing southwest, this condo gets more afternoon sun than any of the area properties. “Taos light” is like nowhere else. Experience it yourself from the condo deck as the sun sets over Kachina Mountain, a special orange glow illuminates the alpine landscape. There are two bedrooms on the first floor. The master bedroom features a king bed, large walk in closet, flat screen TV, and an en suite bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and walk in shower. If you are up early, sun rise views can be seen from the master bedroom window as well as the second floor window in the rear of the condo. Watch a golden, first light slowly appear on Gold Hill as dawn begins to break. The 2nd bedroom features two twin beds, a closet and a door to a full 2nd bathroom. The 2nd full bathroom is also accessed from the bedroom hallway and features a bath tub with shower, toilet and sink. In the bedroom hallway, there are two large closets for all the outdoor gear as well as a full-size washing machine and gas dryer. Up the stairs, the second floor, 500 square foot “loft” features 2 twin beds, 1 bunk bed (full size bed on bottom bunk) a TV with a DVD player, and a new American Leather queen plus comfort sleeper sofa (6 inches larger than a queen). American Leather comfort sleepers are regarded as the most comfortable sleeper sofas on the market. There is also plenty of floor space for a queen Aero bed and/or extra mattress for large groups or families with kids.

This condo is modern, functional and flexible in terms of occupancy- perfect for 2 family/ large family groups, for an adult couples/ girls/guys get-away or for couples looking to spend quality romantic time together. We think we have everything you need for the perfect vacation get away but if we have forgotten anything, let us know and we will be quick to accommodate you.

Taos adventures are infinite; whether it is exploring all the natural surroundings and outdoor activities all around the Taos Ski Valley or exploring the unique art and history of the town of Taos. There is so much to do all over the place. For many, however, coming to the Taos Ski Valley is all about the incredible skiing/boarding. This property is unique because lift# 4 / Kachina lift is just a 5 minute walk from the condo. You are able to skip the crowds and start your day on fresh “back side” snow. You will find that there is nothing like a Taos Ski Valley powder day.

In local folklore, the Taos Mountain has a sacred spirit. According to legend, if the mountain likes you, it will continue to draw you back and keep you. Come stay in this beautiful mountain condo and experience your Taos adventure. You never know, the Mountain might like you and you will be drawn back to Taos over and over again.

NOTE: Roads to the condo are well maintained in the summer and well plowed in the winter. However this condo is located at a high altitude in a heavy snow belt - a vehicle with either 4-wheel drive or AWD is required from November through April (chains are an alternative).

About Nick

In the 80s my Mom, an avid skier, would visit a close friend in Taos every winter and she would talk about this incredible town with incredible skiing. I, of course, did not believe her. How could there be a great ski mountain in New Mexico? After graduating from college in the early 90s, not really knowing what I wanted to do with my life, I decided I wanted to take a year off. I was a big ski racer through high school, loved the outdoors and loved adventures so on my Mom’s recommendation I decided to try the Taos Ski Valley. Through a contact from my Mom’s friend, I got a job taking care of guests at a little chalet and guiding snow mobile tours for, at the time, a new operation. (The snow mobile and now also horseback riding tours are still being operated by my friend and old boss “Big Al” – A.A Taos Ski Valley Wilderness Adventures is a must do in the Taos Ski Valley.) It did not take long for me to get completely hooked. Back country skiing, tennis, white water kayaking and fly fishing were weekly activities for me. I worked hard and played even harder, skiing over 100 days each winter. I very quickly found out that my Mom was right. I found out what the locals already know; that the Taos Ski Valley is one of the premier ski mountains in the US and that the Taos Ski Valley is the Ski Industries’ best kept secret. I left the Taos Ski Valley after 2 winters but I knew I would be back.

Twenty years later, living on the East coast with my wife and 4 children, I want my family to experience Taos and the Taos Ski Valley. I still have dreams about the epic powder days I experienced in Taos and hoping I get to enjoy a few more in the near future.

Nick purchased this condo in 2013

Why Nick chose New Mexico

One of the guests who stayed at the little chalet I was taking care of was a mother and her 28 year old son from Germany. They were so struck by the beauty of the mountains and old world charm of the Taos Ski Valley that the son wanted to make the Taos Ski Valley his home. My boss introduced them to the family that owned much of the vacant land in the Kachina area of the Taos Ski Valley. Over the next 3 weeks, he scouted all the land around the Kachina lift. I joined on many of these excursions and was completely mesmerized by the alpine environment, landscape and the 180 degree mountain views of the Kachina area of the Taos Ski Valley. My new friend, Thomas, eventually purchased the land where the Bavarian now sits and I convinced my family to join me in purchasing a building lot further down the hill towards the base area. Thomas spent the next several years building the Bavarian and has spent the last 17 years making the Bavarian Lodge and Restaurant into a truly special Taos Ski Valley Institution.

I have always felt a connection to the Kachina area of the Taos Ski Valley so when the opportunity arose to purchase a large condo unit in the Kachina area of the Taos Ski Valley, my wife and I took the plunge.

What makes this condo unique

Late afternoon sun, amazing mountain views, and proximity to the Kachina lift make this large condo unique in the Taos Ski Valley but what makes this condo very special is all that surrounds the property.

Great views, lots of room

  • 5 of 5

Nice place! Comfy beds, clean condo. Great views out the BIG windows of Kachina Peak. Bedroom windows also provided beautiful views. Descently appointed kitchen for cooking in. Ski in/out description is a little misleading, as it's really about a 1/4 mile walk to the Bavarian/Lift 8. BUT, we found it easy to just drive over and park at the lift since most of the crowds are at the main base. Overall great place and will come again.

Very nice cabin for ski vacation.

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed these accommodations during our ski trip. The owner was quick to reply by phone. The fireplace was great and provided movies were appreciated. Also, it's nice to be able to wash and dry clothes as needed. Heed the property description: there are 3 flights of stairs to climb - these iced over and we had no shovel to scrape them. There were a few frightening slips on these stairs. Four wheel drive (or chains) are necessary to get in and out of the Wheeler Peak area especially in snow and ice. We had hoped for the opportunity to ski from the area of the Bavarian, but the lift wasn't open during our time there. As such, the drive to the base of the ski village is about 10 mins, then we rented lockers to hold our stuff each day.

Owner's Response: A real bummer Lift#4 was not open yet for your stay which really surprised me. I believe it opened the day after Christmas. I thought you could still ski to main base via the return trail and could also ski down from to Lift 4 so I believe you still could have started and ended your day from Lift#4. Fireplace is great and I am glad you enjoyed my DVD movie collection. Thank you for the helpful tips about snow and the stairs. Unit is on the 3rd floor so it is 2 flights (Not 3 Flights) of stairs but at the high elevation of the ski valley feels like 3 flights of stairs. The condo Association is suppose to keep stairs clear but certainly during storm that is impossible. I have replaced shovel that somehow left the unit last year and have ordered some de-icing pellets to have on hand in case guests want to help keep stairs safe. Many thanks for taking the time to review your stay and hope you can visit again.

What an awesome property! 5 star experience.

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing experience. If you are looking for a condo with ski-in and ski-out capability, this is your place. There is a ski lift within walking distance. And the condo is awesome. The units are literally at the end of the road and you feel like you have the mountain to yourselves. The condo itself was also wonderful. It is so well furnished, with tons of towels, blankets, beds, pillows, and everything you'll need for the kitchen. Just pack your clothes, skis, and food, and you'll be all set! Two things to keep in mind, the nearest grocery store is about 30-40 minutes away, so make sure you have what you need. And also, you will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the condo during the winter months. Also, make time to have a meal at the famous Bavarian restaurant while you're there. It's an experience you will not soon forget and you can walk to it from the condo. Lastly, the owner was amazing to deal with. So professional and so available, when and if, you need anything! All in all, we loved our time at this rental and would definitely come back!!!

Owner's Response: Hi Alisa, I am so glad you had such a wonderful stay! Thank you for the review with some really great tips for future guests. 4 wheel drive in the winter months is required; While there is a small convenient store in the ski valley, it is best to do the main shop in the town of Taos (preferably en route so you can enjoy the skiing and condo during your stay!); and the Bavarian is a must! Hope you can visit again- the summer months are really amazing too as you might imagine with the mountains and nature all around. -Nick

Perfect accommodations for a group of hiking friends

  • 5 of 5

I was happy to find a VRBO in Taos Ski Valley that would accommodate 12 people. I belong to a hiking club in Colorado and it was easy to find 11 others who wanted to hike Mt. Wheeler and Gold Hill from Taos Ski Valley. The trailhead for the short route up to Mt. Wheeler is just a short walk from the condo. From the summit of Mt. Wheeler, we could look down and see the condo! That was kind of fun. We fixed three group breakfasts and two dinners at the condo and had everything we needed in the kitchen. One couple and three men slept downstairs; 7 women slept upstairs, no problem. (I brought a small backpacking air mattress from home and slept on that - which left more room for people to pile their gear and move around. Everyone else slept on the beds/hide-a-beds.) The owner was responsive to all questions. All in all, a great stay in a beautiful spot.

Owner's Response: Hi Anne-Marie, I am so glad you had a great stay at the condo and had a successful summit of Wheeler Peak with your group. It really is a great place to start your hiking day. I am glad the accommodations worked out for your group of 12 adults. The 2nd floor is a really big space with lots of beds. You may be the first group sleeping 7 adult women in that space... However, I have had 8 kids sleeping there in a large 2 family group. I hope you get a chance to visit again for more hiking or some amazing skiing. Many thanks for the review and sharing your experience at my condo. -Nick
