'The Cactus Patch' is a second story full apartment over our garage. 1 Bedroom with queen-size bed, a full kitchen with stove, oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, toaster, and coffee-maker. Living room has 2 futons that fold out to double beds, flat-screen TV, Dish network, and WiFi. There is a half bath, and downstairs is a full bath with tub/shower as well as a washer and dryer. Central heat to keep you warm in the winter and Air Conditioning to keep you cool in the Summer. There is an outside deck that is perfect for watching the sunrise with your morning coffee. You can also sleep under the stars on the deck if you wish.
We share the front yard which is the perfect spot to enjoy the gorgeous Sunsets.
You will have covered parking for you car, truck, or bike.
We are on 10 acres 1/2 mile up a dirt road off of Hwy 62, and 1/2 mile below JTNP land, which means Great Views and not too many neighbors.
We allow small pets, and smoking is only allowed outside.
We have extensive knowledge of the area and would be glad to help you plan your days, but if privacy is what you want, then privacy is what you will get.
We are pet-friendly, biker-friendly, hiker-friendly, rockclimber-friendly, people-friendly and would love to have you stay at this true 'home away from home'.
We are bee-keepers and have bee-hives on the property. They usually don't sting unless you bother the hives, but you will see them out and about gathering pollen.
Some extras that we offer are:
We will do your grocery shopping for you and have it in the apartment when you arrive (for a 10 dollar fee) if you don't feel like spending a minute of your vacation grocery shopping.
And if you don't want to cook, but would like a 'dinner at home', we will cook dinner for you (priced from 20 to 40 dollars per person).
Thank you for considering 'The Cactus Patch'.
We are 'Desert Rats' at heart. We have lived in the desert most of our lives, and love this area. We love to travel and see other places, but we always come home to the desert.
Gayle Austin purchased this apartment in 2011
The reason we love this property is the amazing views. We are high enough up to see across the valley to Sunfair, and to have JTNP lands 1/2 mile behind us. The Stars, Sunrises, and Sunsets are unbelievably beautiful. Being on 10 acres, we have privacy and room to breathe.
Beauty 360 degrees around!
Tim and Lisa were such wonderful guests. They and their 2 boys were so respectful of our property. They left the apartment extremely clean, and well-taken care of. Lovely personalities and very friendly. They are what I imagine when I think about "dream guests". We would absolutely love to host this family again. Thank you Tim and Lisa and A and R.
The house was extremely clean and well organized, the location was easy to find and access. The owners Gayle and Tom are wonderful people and the entire experience was delightful.
The owners have thought of everything you could possibly need, from water bottles for your hike into the desert to mugs in the freezer for a cold beverage when you return. Clean, spacious, and very comfortable. We enjoyed the proximity to Joshua Tree National Park and to the town of Joshua Tree, yet distance from the neighbors out in the desert. The cooking facilities and the laundry area were super.
Gayle and Tom are super hosts. We had a great stay.
We stayed at Gayle and Tom's lovely apartment while on a camping trip with our small retro trailer; first because we were worried about leaving our dog, Jake, in the desert heat while we visited the nearby Integratron. What a great experience it turned out to be! (Both Gayle's rental and the Integratron). The apartment has everything you can need, spotlessly clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the deck and the view of the stars was unlike anything we have seen for many years. Gayle and Tom are wonderful hosts...we were sorry we didn't have more time to talk with them. Their desert garden was beautiful and we enjoyed the dried figs and honey that Gayle provided. We both felt that this was a place where the creative juices could flow...our next trip will be for a much longer stay!
On a recent weeklong roadtrip with my family, we stayed at this private home adjacent apartment in the desert. I gotta say, it was my favorite stop. Lovely desert property, friendly owners, and an adorable and slightly kitchy apartment filled with everything you'd need. The best bit was enjoying the stars on the little 2nd floor patio off the apartment, as the place is a bit removed from the town proper and the reduced light pollution makes for great viewing. Despite my dogs dislike of the stairs involved, I'd probably want to stay again if I was headed out that way.
Tom was a wonderful host. We had a wonderful time and really felt comfortable being around him and at the Cactus Patch. Would go again if the opportunity came.
Thank you Cactus Patch - you have a wonderful place!
Most people come to Joshua Tree to visit Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP), we also have murals and museums in 29 Palms, The Integratron and Gubler's orchids in Landers, Wildlife Sanctuary in Morongo Valley, Arts and Crafts galore in Joshua Tree, and museums and shopping in Yucca Valley.
JTNP and has hiking trails, rocks to climb, flora and fauna to view, and sights to see. There is a visitor center in Joshua Tree, and it is the west entrance to the Park.
Palm Springs is less than an hour away and is a mecca for food, shopping, spas, and sunning. The aerial tram in Palm Springs takes you one mile up Mount San Jacinto into a whole different world, 40 degrees cooler and lush trees and bushes, with snow in the winter.
