We are Carmen and Elmar. We like to share time with friends, enjoy music and we love to travel. A few years ago we discovered VRBO, rented places all over Europe and the Middle East and decided we could be hosts as well since we know from our own experience what visitors need and want.
Our day jobs? Carmen is a teacher working at the University of Southern California. Elmar is a journalist specialized in film (that's why our guests can enjoy an extensive movie library).
Having lived in many countries before we settled in beautiful Southern California we always find it interesting to meet new people from all kinds of backgrounds, generations and cultures.
And we try to make them feel as welcome and comfortable as we would like to feel whenever we are guests.
Elmar purchased this apartment in 2001
We booked Elmar and Carmen's place for 5 nights in November as we were looking for a private location in the hills, close to the action in Hollywood, and most importantly an outside terrace for some sun. This place delivered all three.
Elmar and Carmen are very friendly, available when you need anything but otherwise keeping out of the way to allow privacy.
The view from the terrace is undersold in the listing - in reality it is stunning, a panoramic view of peaceful hillside properties, with downtown skyscrapers in the distance and even the ocean on the horizon. I spent many hours gazing at the view and enjoying the all-day sun.
Interior wise the unit is classically styled, the decor dated but a pleasant and charming place to be. We never had any problems with noise at night and enjoyed sleeping on the memory foam mattress.
Location is great, a short walk to some shops and restaurants and we managed to reach the walk of fame in around 20 minutes, yes its steep on the way back but OK for the able-bodied. There's lots of scenic walks and drives nearby.
I don't agree with the critical review on here about parking. We were always able to find a spot on Elmar's street and there were plenty of other unrestricted streets around. Sometimes the spots were a little tight, but so are the streets in the hills generally and anyone looking to stay here surely must know this. In my opinion its no issue.
All in all this was a fantastic value stay and I would recommend.
After reading all the positive review on Elmar and Carmen's place I decided to stay here while visiting L.A. last month. I hate to say it but I was disappointed in a few things. First of all, there was supposed to be a welcome packet for me and there wasn't. I had to call Elmar the first day because the t.v. remote was missing but he brought it right over. However, the biggest issue for me was the parking. His home is located up in the hills on a one way street with parallel parking on one side and it only has room for about 8 cars. I arrived home one evening around 9:30pm and there were no parking spots. I called Elmar but did not get an answer and left a voice message. After driving around for 45 minutes I finally parked. Once I started to walk to the house I couldn't find it as it was pitch black. I decided to go back to my car and try to find a closer spot but I lost the car too. Thankfully, I had the address in Google Maps and it directed me to the house. Even though I had paid for one more night I decided not to stay there the following night and instead got a hotel room in another city, closer to where I would be the next day. So, I paid double for two nights. It was very frustrating, not to mention expensive and my suggestion would be if you're going to have a car you have to arrive home early evening to find a parking spot.
This was exactly as listed and photographed. Elmar and Carmen were very friendly and helpful. There are 1-2 other places on the property as well as the host house. Very convenient to all the sights and restaurants in Hollywood, Los Feliz, Franklin Village, and access to the 101. The place is old and delightfully rustic and eclectic, with a comfy bed and updated bath and kitchenette. The deck is lovely and you see the ocean in the far distance on a clear day (but probably not safe for very young children). The parking is tight, but no restrictions and always available. There are steep stairs to go down to the apartment, in case stairs are an issue. I recommend this as a place to stay if you want to be near Hollywood action but in a quiet retreat away from it as well. The hosts were excellent.
Wonderful property in the Hollywood Hills. Quiet comfort off the main drag but close to everything. Elmar and Carmen were extremely accommodating. A recent leg injury made things challenging for me, but Elmar made it work. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return.
This apartment was exactly as described! The home was beautiful, and the views were amazing. We loved that we could cook ourselves meals with the kitchen appliances provided, watch movies from the extensive collection, and sit out on the balcony to read. Very relaxing!
We came to Hollywood specifically for a John Williams concert at the Hollywood Bowl, and chose this location because it seemed like a reasonable distance to walk. While we could have walked to and from, we had a great conversation with the homeowner about where best to park downhill to avoid a strenuous uphill walk on the way back. She even hand drew us a map and gave us advice on how to get to the Bowl. So helpful!
Parking was surprisingly not an issue even though the home is in the hillier neighborhood area of Hollywood. Only one instance were we not able to find a street spot on the same street as the house and had to park just downhill in another neighborhood. Not too stressful!

From your apartment you can overlook Hollywood with the Hollywood/Highland Complex (annual OSCAR Gala). You are in walking distance to the Walk Of Fame, the Hollywood Bowl, short distance by car to Universal Studio, Paramount, Musso & Frank's (Oldest Restaurant in Hollywood - since 1919 serves the best Martinis in town). Restaurant Row on nearby Franklin Avenue is THE meeting place for Young Hollywood.
Even if you're not in town for 'Hollywood', the location is very central: 15 min to Downtown, 5 min to bus station, 15 min walk to subway (Metrolink), direct Freeway access to Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City, Burbank, etc.
And for your fitness needs: Our neighborhood borders on the huge Griffith Park with hiking paths at the Bronson Caves or at the Ferndell Park just minutes away. Trips to mountain biking in Griffith Park, jogging around Lake Hollywood or horseback riding at the Sunset Ranch are shorter than you can sing Randy Newman's 'I Love LA'.
