About Elmar

We are Carmen and Elmar. We like to share time with friends, enjoy music and we love to travel. A few years ago we discovered VRBO, rented places all over Europe and the Middle East and decided we could be hosts as well since we know from our own experience what visitors need and want.

Our day jobs? Carmen is a teacher working at the University of Southern California. Elmar is a journalist specialized in film (that's why our guests can enjoy an extensive movie library).

Having lived in many countries before we settled in beautiful Southern California we always find it interesting to meet new people from all kinds of backgrounds, generations and cultures.

And we try to make them feel as welcome and comfortable as we would like to feel whenever we are guests.

Great for Exploring Hollywood

Elmar was a terrific host, he let us have a private stay but was there when we needed him. He is very knowledgeable about the Hollywood scene. The bed was incredibly comfortable and we got some great rest after our long days adventuring. The views from the apartment were amazing, wish we’d had more time to enjoy the deck. The apartment is conveniently located to several major attractions. Overall we had a great stay, thank you Elmar & Carmen.

Great view and collection of movies / music

This private room was perfect for my wife and I to get away for our anniversary.

Amazing views of Hollywood and Santa Monica in the distance.

The deck had seating and a propane heater for evening lounging with coffee / tea.

An expansive selection of music and movies / tv series on DVD was available for setting the mood or unwinding for the evening. We definitely plan on coming back in the future.

Classic home on a quiet street overlooking LA. Great views, perfect place for two people.

We spent almost a week here (sunday-thurs.), and it was perfect for the two of us. The house was really comfortable, especially the bed, nice and soft. The view from the patio is great, day or night. The house is just north of LA but it was located close to plenty of things to do. Observatory, greek theater, staples center, Hollywood, etc., everything is pretty close. Overall it was a great place. Comfortable, clean, and quiet, what more could you ask for while on vacation?

A Retreat in the Hollywood Hills

We stayed here has a couple and loved it. We had a wonderful trip to L.A. and this place made that much more relaxing and fun. The city was easy to access and close to Trader Joe's. I highly recommend it and really I wanted to stay longer. It is just the right size for two and we loved our romantic sunsets. In the morning I was able to get some work done early on the deck and have all day to tour. It's a quiet neighborhood. We never had any parking issues. We had a Chevrolet Impala as a rental car which was too big. Next time I think we would stay corolla size for parking. There are steps going down to the house but path is well lit. These folks are great folks and I would go back anytime.

A wonderful and reasonably priced retreat near the heart of Hollywood

The accommodations were as pictured. The host provided us a free bottle of Cabernet upon arrival and made sure we had nice homey touches including coffee machine (fully stocked) and bottled waters in the mini-fridge. The room was spacious, well-appointed, and comfortable. The neighborhood is very quiet, and the private balcony overlooking the city and Hollywood Hills is beautiful, especially at night. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed staying here. Parking was not an issue, neither was access as I have read elsewhere. The directions we were given to find the place were spot on and we had no problem finding it. The traffic in LA, well that's another story! But it's certainly not any fault of the host's. Overall, we give this 5 stars enthusiastically. If we return to LA, we'll be looking up this place for rent again. Oh yes--and the price was very reasonable, actually much cheaper than a similarly appointed hotel.

Fantastic hollywood location and views

We booked Elmar and Carmen's place for 5 nights in November as we were looking for a private location in the hills, close to the action in Hollywood, and most importantly an outside terrace for some sun. This place delivered all three.

Elmar and Carmen are very friendly, available when you need anything but otherwise keeping out of the way to allow privacy.

The view from the terrace is undersold in the listing - in reality it is stunning, a panoramic view of peaceful hillside properties, with downtown skyscrapers in the distance and even the ocean on the horizon. I spent many hours gazing at the view and enjoying the all-day sun.

Interior wise the unit is classically styled, the decor dated but a pleasant and charming place to be. We never had any problems with noise at night and enjoyed sleeping on the memory foam mattress.

Location is great, a short walk to some shops and restaurants and we managed to reach the walk of fame in around 20 minutes, yes its steep on the way back but OK for the able-bodied. There's lots of scenic walks and drives nearby.

I don't agree with the critical review on here about parking. We were always able to find a spot on Elmar's street and there were plenty of other unrestricted streets around. Sometimes the spots were a little tight, but so are the streets in the hills generally and anyone looking to stay here surely must know this. In my opinion its no issue.

All in all this was a fantastic value stay and I would recommend.

From your apartment you can overlook Hollywood with the Hollywood/Highland Complex (annual OSCAR Gala). You are in walking distance to the Walk Of Fame, the Hollywood Bowl, short distance by car to Universal Studio, Paramount, Musso & Frank's (Oldest Restaurant in Hollywood - since 1919 serves the best Martinis in town). Restaurant Row on nearby Franklin Avenue is THE meeting place for Young Hollywood.

Even if you're not in town for 'Hollywood', the location is very central: 15 min to Downtown, 5 min to bus station, 15 min walk to subway (Metrolink), direct Freeway access to Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City, Burbank, etc.

And for your fitness needs: Our neighborhood borders on the huge Griffith Park with hiking paths at the Bronson Caves or at the Ferndell Park just minutes away. Trips to mountain biking in Griffith Park, jogging around Lake Hollywood or horseback riding at the Sunset Ranch are shorter than you can sing Randy Newman's 'I Love LA'.
