Casa de Karma was constructed in 2007.
The main objectives were to build a home that maximized the incredible Ocean view directly out front.
While limiting the angles of which you could see into the house.
The home is located on a rock cliff with the constant sound of the Ocean and indigenous wildlife echoing through the circular cylinders.
Being the last home in the row of five beach front homes make it extremely private and serene.
The home is also located on the edge of the owners 30 acres of private reserve property.
With many walking paths paved and packed dirt you can roam for hours without even leaving the property.
The local people you encounter on the beach and on the road are friendly, courteous and always willing to talk story, as El Salvador is a rightfully proud nation.
Buenas is a typical greeting that will usually get you the same in return.
I cannot say enough good things about the resourceful local people, my friends, family/care takers and neighbors here in El Salvador.
Without all of whom I would not be privileged enough to visit their hospitable, beautiful country.
The house itself was built with all local materials, from the foundation using the same rock as the volcanoes to the stone floors and lime stone walls.
We set out to build a home that also was not all bling bling.
There were actually guys that spent weeks chipping away at columns to make them look aged.
Special molds were hand built to form Mayan patterns with-in the home to respect the roots of the country and its people.
The Kitchen which was originally going to be a third bedroom, it was changed last minute to my favorite room.
The Kitchen is the place in most homes where people enjoy hanging out.
Therefor we destructed all the walls except the back supporting wall and opened the Kitchen up completely to the elements of nature.
There is a surrounding Lava Top Bar with a central (also round) cooking station.
Along the sides are sinks, serving bars as well as an in development stone oven.
The Kitchen chairs were custom built with extra height to optimize the incredible 360 degree view of the Ocean and surrounding mountains.
You can enjoy your meals and beverages to the sound of the Ocean and indigenous wildlife.
The home was designed with multiple levels and individual cylinders to enhance the features listed below.
Privacy, sound levels, acoustics, ceiling heights, lighting, air flow and all of the little things that can make a difference in a good vacation, restful sleep, peacefulness etc. were taken into consideration, thought out and applied into this unique karmic structure.
All The furnishings and art with-in and on the Terrace were custom built and designed by the locals who knew, the homes unique structure, myself and the intended vibe.
Which makes the home seem all that much more comfortable.
I find myself not leaving the property for weeks at a time, due to fact that the best fisherman are my care taker/friend and his friend two doors down.
The local ladies bake tortilla's and bread and our the locals bring fresh picked vegetables and fresh cheese to the front door.
Most else can be found at the small market (5 minute walk) at the end of our street (dirt road) there are also great restaurants a short distance away.
Special trips such as the Mayan Ruins, Capitol, Volcano, Zip Line, Shopping or Night Life Tours etc. require a 24 hour notice.
Horseback rides from the house, can be arranged on a same day morning notice.
The Fishing and Sailboat tours require a 48 hour notice.
What is so cool is that whatever you would like to experience during your stay is with-in a two hour drive of your private paradise.
We have a professional driver with a car, pick-up and microbus who is friendly, safe, reliable knowledgeable, he has been driving for our family for 20 years.
Let us know if you have specific questions.

I've been fortunate enough to have been a visitor to this wonderful country and its incredibly hospitable/humble people for almost 25 years now.
I have also traveled the globe for over 35 years and this place has captured my heart like no other.
Currently I reside in San Diego and Mammoth Lakes CA. as I am a snowboard product representative in the winter.
When summer comes its time for music and surfing!
I especially enjoy showing people parts of this country that you the average visitor would never see.
Believe me there are many magical adventures to be had within the borders of this small country and the Islands that border the east of the country.
I know of many places in this tropical paradise that you would guess that you are elsewhere in the world.
My connection to this country is lengthy and ever developing as we have a very special neighborhood that I enjoy giving back to when and where possible.
My 1974 Land Rover has been nick named by the locals as Carro Fantasma (everything here has a second name) and is know up and down the coast as well as deep into the mountains and rivers.
No worries, we have professional full time drivers with current/safe vehicles if you are not in for an adventure in Carro Fantasma.
We can arrange a 1/4, 1/2 or full day trips to whatever you would like to do or see with in and around El Salvador and beyond!
We are also affiliated with other operations throughout different parts of the country, so if you desire a multiple location visit we can assist you there as well.
I encourage anyone of any age or family size to visit this incredible country.
I have been all throughout Latin America and there is something phenomenal about this country.
Maybe it's the smell of the burning wood fires pushed by off shore winds as the local prepare fresh fish and pupusas over salt soaked drift wood as you surf a perfect right hand wave to the beach at sunset.

Doug Harley purchased this house in 1997
The surf break out front has always been one of my favorites.
While surfing this break one day I happened to crack my head on the reef gashing the crown of my head open requiring 57 stitches.
When I asked the doctor for 2 more he just mumbled something to the effect of 'loco gringo' so I ended up with 59 (K59) stitches total.
My original piece of property was shown to me me by my friend Aldo, whom without his hospitality and friendship, I would not have continued to visit this country during its more challenging times.
As well as Roberto and Jimmy Rotherham and their incredible families, Muchas Gracias!
This property is out of town and off the beaten path, incredibly beautiful and private.
It features perfect uncrowded surf (for regular and goofy footers) at the bottom of the stairs with friendly locals that are a blast to surf, fish, laugh and play soccer with.
The house sits on a cliff away from the beach providing complete privacy. You can sit in the pool or hammock sipping your beverage of choice while watching the surf and soccer game go off!
The Property itself is amazing as it is spans over 30 acres with a mile of paved walking trails and miles of dirt walking trails through the dense surrounding jungle. Which will eventually lead you to to the KM 59 restaurant on the Pan American Hwy.
As you cruise the property there are mango tree's, almond tree's a Plumeria Tree forest, Mayan Caves, Natural Jacuzzi's with mineral water, endless birds etc.
This is one of the largest Ocean Front properties in the country, many times I go weeks without leaving the property.
Our care taker and neighbor friend are two of the best fisherman in the area, therefore fresh sea food is abundant daily.
Being that the property is so large, you can easily separate from travel companions and enjoy some quality time alone.
Saludos, Casa de Karma
The original piece of property involved 3 terraces leading to the Ocean.
I spent five years just building Mayan style walls to secure the property for development.
During which time the property to the west (the coast runs east & west) became available, so I purchased it and decided that was the spot for Casa de Karma.
We decided on a round structure with round cylinders for ambiance and Ocean views.
The home features two levels.
As you enter the house you are on the friends level which includes the friends bedroom with 2 twin beds (also designed to combine into a queen size) as well as 2 air beds. Guest bathroom with limestone shower and the large open air kitchen facing the Ocean and Mountains in the circular central zone.
You then proceed down four stairs to the second larger circular central living room, bar, master bedroom and two arched doorways out to the 200 degree Ocean Front terrace. Once on the terrace you are directly in front of a private swimming pool, beach with 86 degree Ocean water and perfect waves and friendly swimming.
To access the beach you simply walk down the stairs, through another doorway and onto the beach.
If you are off for a surf there is a waxing station at the bottom of the stairs.
If you notice the lineup is a bit more crowded than you prefer, just walk five minutes west to the next right point which could have minimal or no people.
If your just beach cruising to the left (east) there are endless tide pools, little caves, private beaches etc. all of which are tide dependent.
Sunsets and sunrises from every angle of the property are some of my favorites as well as the full moon nights.
From the top of the property you can see multiple points down the coast as well as the top of the mountain top.
The care takers have been on the property for forty years working around the property daily to ensure safety and maintenance.
The Family will ensure that you have cultural memorable experience.
We wanted to finally touch base and Thank you and La Familia for an incredible experience in El Salvador.
It was really hard to leave your extensive paradise, the last day when Ernesto, Micheal & Edgard blasted off fireworks for my Uncles Birthday and Maria made a cake and the whole staff sang Feliz Cumpleano in spanish brings smiles to our faces upon every recollection !
The setting, the house, the food, the countries people and their hospitality were all top notch as well a full on surf filled cultural experience !!
We will be back to Casa de Karma annually.
Thanks Again, Mateo y Familia
this is a very unique house tucked inside a small private neighborhood. Everyone working for Doug was extremely nice and helpful. Maria is an awesome cook! Doug was always around when you needed to make any arrangements and a classic character. One of the great things about the house is the location on the cliff side, great views and a nice breeze. The breeze is especially nice in the tropical heat.
There were many surf surf options within a ten minute walk from the house. K59 was always empty at sunrise where u could surf it alone. If it got crowded more than 5 people, there were many options walking up k61 and the various books and crannies between them. There were no one really surfing any of those breaks.
The property was impressive from the very first glance. Full ocean view, warm breezes and a friendly welcome from all. This house is more like a terraced estate. Every spot that you place your feet onto has an ocean view. There are plenty of hammocks to relax and sink it all in. The beach is literally just steps away, and it is expansive and breathtaking. The ocean is consistently pumping out endless waves, without a crowd to steal your ride. Doug was a great host. He set up excursions, a surprise surfing adventure by boat, and even had a masseuse on hand! Maria, the exquisite cook, was a pure delight. She brought a smile to all of our faces and kept our bellies full!
We will return....hopefully sooner than later!
My husband and a friend wanted to surf El Salvador. So we went to Casa de Karma which is right at K59. They had a great time in the water and loved that they could roll out of bed and into the surf. Dream come true. The house is very nice. Very cool design, big deck with hammocks to laze away the afternoons and take in the view. Big dining table on the deck as well to enjoy outdoor meals. AC in the bedrooms was a plus. The pool was a great spot to chill in and my son loved it ,as the rips and waves in the ocean out front were not for kid swimming. The view from the house is gorgeous. We fell asleep to crashing waves every night. Doug was a great host. He provided us with anything we needed. Maria and her family also live on the property. Maria is the sweetest lady and will cook you delicious meals whenever you want. She even taught me how to make papusas. Doug had a couple local drivers to pic us up from the airport or take us to town when we felt like a change of pace. This is the way to go as renting cars in El Salvador can be tricky. We also felt safer driving with a local. Doug's property is well secured and he is close with the local community and they all seem to look out for eachother. Very nice neighborhood with lovely people. The surf camp a couple doors down on the beach has fast wifi (if you have to work a bit). It is also a good place to meet people from all over the world. The palapas on the beach have great local seafood meals. We loved our stay and are very grateful to Doug for our week long home away from home. Oh, the house also comes with some very sweet doggies!
My husband and I stayed for a week at Doug's home in Taquillo. Before we even got there, we knew it would be a fantastic trip, Doug's communication with us was remarkable. He arranged for everything we asked for and more. Dinners overlooking the ocean, surfing, trips to local villages and Mayan ruins. He even helped me plan a birthday surprise for my husband. We looked forward to seeing him and his wonderful staff each day. The house is gorgeous and the views from every angle are just stunning. We could not have been more pleased with this getaway!
We had a wonderful time overall. The house and location are even better than what the pictures would suggest. The area was especially notable in the wonderful people. My 7 and 14-year-olds were warmly greeted by the local kids and the place is wonderful for children. Doug and the staff were attentive, friendly and very pleasurable to be around without being intrusive or overbearing. I highly recommend the place and we hope to make a trip back sometime.
Our group was in search of some down time and we got just what we wanted. The pictures dont do the area justice as it is an incredible beautiful place. The locals make it even better. So eager to meet and hang out and show you the country. Doug was great as well. taugh us about the country and alot of history as he has been in the area for many years.
We where fortunate enough to have great weather, warm water temps and incredible surf.
Maria and Netty where great as well and we hope to be able to head back sooner than later.
The local kids and families were incredible to us and it is definitly a trip we wont forget and still talk about daily! Such a great country with such deep history.
