Adequate Apartment and Location,

  • 3 of 5

We arrived at this apartment, a short walk from the train station, and after a half-hour wait was greeted by the person who would let us in and collect the balance of the rent. As other reviewers have noted, the landlord requires the balance of the rent to be paid in cash -- kind of a challenge for travelers to carry that much cash. The apartment was equipped with only the bare necessities, and lacked things like extra toilet paper, paper towels, hand towels for the kitchen and bathrooms and only one bath towel for each person. I wrote to Johan the following morning, and by the end of day there were additional supplies delivered to the apartment. We were very grateful for the quick response, but remain surprised that we had to ask. The location is on a busy intersection and fairly noisy when the bars nearby were busy, but that was only a problem on the weekend. We walked or took the train to most places that we wanted to see, so the location is convenient from that standpoint. The washer and dryer are a big plus. In all, I think the price of this apartment is too high given the general condition and lack of basic amenities.

Location great, amenities lacking

  • 3 of 5

This apartment's location is fantastic, but our stay in the apartment for 8 days could have been better with just a few small extra amenities. Our group of 4 liked to save time by eating breakfast in the room, but this kitchen lacked decent knives, no kitchen sponges or towels, only one (very rusty) cooking pan, and the bathrooms did not have hand towels. Not a big deal, just little things that you expect to be supplied by the owner. Also, the woman who greeted us and later returned our deposit did not seem very proficient in English and made us wait a bit--however, Johan did a good job in making sure it was all coordinated. With just a few small investments, this apartment could earn 4 stars from us!

Excellent Location

  • 5 of 5

As per the other reviewers, don't rent this place if you have a problem with lots of very steep & narrow stairs. Otherwise, the place couldn't be better! We arrived at the train station & crossed the street to the traveller's information centre to get directions. It was an easy 5 minute walk from there to the apartment. The door was locked, so I walked into the smoke shop below & asked the proprietor there if I could borrow his phone. Luckily, he was more than happy to oblige. We called the owner who told us the place was being cleaned, but he would have the cleaners let us in, which they did. Being the trusting Canadians we are, we handed the cleaners the cash for the rent and left our bags there while we went out for a walk to let them finish. They gave us the key to the apartment before we left. We felt a little uncomfortable handing them cash with no receipt & leaving our bags there, but as it turned out, they were honest people. When we returned, the place was spic & span & our bags were still there! Everything was perfect & I am very glad I decided to book it as we were all very pleased. As every other reviewer stated, it is in a perfect location for people watching & taking in all the touristy stuff. No need for a cab at the end of the night.

Excellent apartment, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

The apartment itself is beautiful and clean and well fitted out with everything you might need (only minus point would be it has a combi microwave rather than a proper oven, as stated on the website). The pictures on the website are up to date and certainly do the apartment justice. It is centrally located so we expected some noise but the apartment is very well soundproofed, we didn't experience any problems with the windows closed. The front balcony is perfect for people-watching and we spent many an evening sat outside watching the world go by. Public transport links are minutes away and it's only a 10-15 minute walk from Centraal Station. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful throughout the whole booking process and we really can't find any fault with our stay!

Nice apartment, conveniently located.

  • 4 of 5

We had a great long weekend in Amsterdam with some friends and our dog. The Singel apartment is conveniently located within a 10 minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, which makes it easy to access public transport to anywhere in town.

The apartment was clean, nicely furnished, and comfortable, and it was easy to feel at home quickly there.

There is a coffeeshop below the apartment and though the apartment is on the top floor if you have the windows open in the living room you can occasionally smell some smoke from the terrace below, but its the same thing you'll smell anywhere in town. One of the bedrooms is on the street which can get loud sometimes late at night if you leave the windows open. The owner required us to call upon arrival and pay the balance of our fees in cash, both of which can be inconvienent for travellers coming from abroad without phones or access to more than a few hundred euros in cash from an ATM per day..

Overall I'd have no trouble staying there again.

Wonderful situation but dirty location

  • 3 of 5

The access to apartment and rooms is only for the youngest and for people who do not care with cleanliness.. It is the first time in all my renting experiences with vrbo.com that I have to go through a more than dirty entrance. I wonder what the 200€ deposit is for, as we had bed sheets with spots which should have been paid by the person who had walked on the bed with his dirty shoes and thrown away. The bath towels had holes, as well as the kitchen towels. The kitchen was unsufficently equipped, i.e. bread knife, opener, paring-knife, more than 4 table-forks, more than 1 pan and if possible in good state, etc. The washing and drying machines had not been cleaned for a while.

Considering the price for the level of maintenance of the apartment, it is too expensive.

Owner's Response: the apartment is located in a typical Dutch building on a third floor of narrow stairs shared with more neighbors and some times is not as clean as we wish I accept that the guest forgot to mention that because he was a senior the greeter have carried his bags up and down the stairs on arrival and departure. the holes in the towels and the spots in the linen is not TRUE and I do not accept a complaint that is a lie. nor the linen or the towels had spots or holes. Walking on beds with shoes on????? NOONE walks with shoes in the beds in a civilized country I believe that what the senior guest forgot to mention is that the apartment is located next to a coffee-shop and this may have been the reason that made him so uncomfortable in the location. the 200 euros deposit do not cover even the standing lamp next to the sofa, let alone the flat screen TV. the guest has asked the greeter to inform how every appliance worked, I guess that at that time he forgot to mention that the washing machine and the dryer has not been cleaned in a while. I have not ever replied to a review, but this one is not sincere and is not fair.
