Austria's 1st self-sufficient holiday resort: winter skiing / summer adventure

This high quality traditional chalet was hand-built by expert carpenter Herbert Bliem and his local team. The available chalet is extremely luxurious, only 5 minutes from the main St Michael ski lift and part of a private plot with 9 other, similar chalets, central facilities, natural swimming pond (summer only), private gym, cinema room and sauna.

The accommodation includes 3 double and/or twin bedrooms, sleeping 6, plus a converted loft space, which sleeps a further four (children love this!). Fully furnished and equipped with excellent kitchen and dining facilities, the chalet comes with linen, towels and even a daily delivery of fresh bread (on request).

The open plan living room features a large lounge and dining area, traditional Austrian stove (which will be lit when you return from the slopes) and is stocked with a variety of games, DVDs and consoles. There's also a sun terrace and BBQ area.

The managers are an Austrian-English couple who will really look after you!

Green Credentials: St Martin Chalets is Austria's first truly environmentally friendly, energy-self-sufficient holiday resort. The chalets and central facilities, which include sauna, recreation/cinema room and gym, were all built by local craftsmen, using locally sourced, untreated timber, triple glazing and 100% pure sheep's wool insulation. Our buildings are extremely efficient, for which the development has received international acclaim. It is entirely self-sufficient – supplied by natural spring water, and heated and powered by a state-of-the-art vegetable oil power plant.

Electric Bikes: We are also among Austria's sustainable tourism pioneers. Herby has led a very successful project to create an electric 'E-Bike' network in Lungau, which is now in place. You can now hire battery-powered mountain bikes here at St Martin Chalets and recharge them all over the region. This enables people who may otherwise avoid long cycle rides to enjoy much longer tours (perhaps alongside other non-battery-powered cyclists in their group) without taking the car.

In a similar way, our guests can take one of our electric golf buggies if they need to pop into town for shopping. Or, if they have a tee time at Golf Club Lungau (less than one kilometer away), they can take the buggy instead of the car. There's a cycle path that will keep you off the road, which means not only can you leave the car behind, you can also enjoy the 19th hole!!

Activity and Adventure Holidays: We don't just provide accommodation. Winter and summer, we go to every length to ensure your holiday is as action-packed (or not) as you want it to be. When you arrive you'll find a pre-prepared activity programme, including lots of free activities we're running (and a few special options that involve a surcharge). There is no obligation to take part, but it gives you the option to enjoy some of the area's better-kept secrets by making the most of our local knowledge.

  • Including the downstairs WC there are plenty of bathroom facilities for 10 guests. Having said that, as one of the upstairs bathrooms is en-suite, it helps if the people staying in that room are prepared to share their shower.

  • Thanks to the converted loft space, the chalet sleeps 10 comfortably, although it doesn't feel too big for smaller groups. The third bedroom's twin beds are designed to fit together as a third double. One of the bedrooms have its own balcony and the master bedroom is en-suite.

A fabulous and unique holiday

We (husband, granny, granddad and three children - two very small) spent a glorious sunny week at St Martins. The standard of accommodation is second to none - the natural pool in the centre is glorious on a summer day. The region is stunning. We absolutely love St Martin - the kids loved rooting for vegetables in the garden and all in all this is on the (very) short list of venues that we will return to. Loved it. Couldn't improve it actually.

The Lungau region is a particularly beautiful part of Austria and is blessed not only to be one of the most snow sure parts of the country, but also to enjoy over 200 days of sunshine each year. With superb family-friendly skiing between 1700m and 2400m - all available on one lift pass - the region contains no fewer than 5 intertwined ski areas, covering over 250km of piste.

The charming village of St Martin and its larger cousin, St Michael (which is less than 10mins walk away), has numerous restaurants, traditional gasthofs and bars, which offer some great local cuisine and nightlife (Jodi and Herby will put you right). The main streets are lined with historic buildings, butchers, bakers, supermarkets and banks, offering all the necessary amenities. In the summer, the area is one big adventure playground, offering golf, cycling, hiking, fishing, rafting and lots more.

It's a great base for touring too. Hungary, Slovenia, Venice, Turin and the Italian lakes are all within reach
