About Barbara Bergin
I’m Barbara Bergin, an orthopedic surgeon from Austin, Texas, where I live with my husband, who is a nephrologist (kidney specialist). We met in medical school! My two grown kids also live and work in Austin. Lucky us! A couple of colleagues and I founded Texas Orthopedics, Sports & Rehabilitation Associates in 1986, and since then it has grown into a group of 37 orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists and a rheumatologist. I love to write, and that eventually led to the publication of my first novel, ENDINGS (Sunstone Press), in 2007. I’ve been working on a second novel, THE WISH, for a long time, and have a pending contract for my first non-fiction, Sit Like A Man. You can read about sitting like a man, as well as many other medical self-help hints on my blog at I’m also a cowgirl, and an experienced equestrienne, actively competing in the western sport of Reining. One of my retired reining horses lives out at the ranch, along with a few other retired horses, who have nice green pastures in which to spend the rest of their lives. But the Palo Blanco Ranch does not provide a horseback riding experience for clients. Sorry. Horses can be dangerous to all but the most experienced…and even then… My most recent passion, and the thing that keeps me from finishing THE WISH: songwriting and playing my guitar. I just finished recording my first CD, BLOOD RED MOON, which should be released this fall (2018). I hope you’ll consider making a reservation to stay at the Palo Blanco Ranch! I fell in love with it immediately over 20 years ago. When I’m out there, it’s peaceful, and I feel as if I had travelled back in time to my childhood, even though didn’t grow up in the country. I was born in the Bronx! I’ve lived in Kansas City, Houston, and now Austin for the past 32 years. Somehow I feel like country living was in my blood, and when I’m hanging out at the ranch, it feels like a step back in time.
Barbara Bergin purchased this House in 1996
Why Barbara Bergin chose Flatonia
You will understand how I feel as if I had stepped back in time when I'm out there, once you arrive. Even though we have all the amenities, like city and well water, electricity and a Keurig machine, you will notice that we have a functioning windmill in the front pasture. You'll love my old-timey barn, and you'll gather eggs for breakfast! We have a one-acre stock tank (that's a pond for those of you who have never lived in the Texas). Yes the cows and horses hang out there. But so do we. We swim in it, and the water feels fine!
What makes this House unique
-You'll have access to 200 acres of farmland, pastures and wooded areas. We have a whole petrified wood tree, half buried out in the woods. It's magical. We have cut trails through the woods. It's perfect for hiking. When you're done, go jump in the you dare! Our kids did! I would never tell you to do something I wouldn't do! -You'll hike among the cows. They respect you by keeping their distance. The horses might come around, but you can shoo them away, and if they're bugging you, we'll put them up. Please don't feed them treats, and they'll probably just ignore you. It's all about the food for them. -Bring your bicycles. You can get around on them too! -Go take a walk a half mile down the road, and you'll come to St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church. It's one of those little painted churches. Across the street is the SPJST Dance Hall. The Sandra Bullock movie, Hope Floats was filmed in the church and SPJST Hall. What does that stand for? Some People Just Standing Around, is what the folks around Kovar say. But it's owned by a Czechoslovakian insurance company, so it's a Czech acronym. -You can barbecue some steaks out there, and hang out at our little cabana by the barn. -You must get up early in the morning, fix a cup of coffee, and sit out on the front porch. I wrote a song about this. It's on my CD, BLOOD RED MOON. The song is called My Life's Good (Cuz I Don't Live in the City). Well, I do live in the city, but I have this wonderful place to come to every once in a while, when I need a little break!

Quaint and Peaceful
This precious ranch house was the perfect getaway for the weekend. We felt like we were back in time yet we had all the luxuries we needed. The house is decorated absolutely adorable! We loved the fresh eggs and the lake is beautiful. We only wished we had another day to stay longer. We will defiantly be back. Thank you!
Old-timey Ranch stay
We stayed at the old-timey ranch for the weekend. It is a very peaceful remote location. We really enjoyed having coffee in the front porch, picking the farm fresh eggs and making the best breakfast we've had in a long time, a true farm life experience! Miguel was very helpful and made us feel at home. Thank you Barbara! Loved it!!. We can't wait to stay here again!
Thank you for the nice review! So glad y’all enjoyed your experience out there. Come back again!
