About Lana Richardson

My husband and I met 25 years ago in a beautiful, red, 2 story cottage in South Lake Tahoe, very similar to our vacation home. I had flown to Tahoe to attend a friend's birthday and he was one of her roommates. We fell in love that weekend(I know, still hard for me to believe) and were married less than a year later. Ten years ago we were actively looking for a vacation home and I saw the internet listing for our vacation home. I called my husband and told him that it was so similar to the home in which we had met,and although at that time it needed a lot of work, we bought it and it became a labor of love. It has been the center of so many happy family memories. Our children are young adults now and our middle son married young and we have two beautiful granddaughters. They have helped us create another generation of wonderful family adventures. We hope to share our home and help other families create happy memories to last a lifetime.

Lana Richardson purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Lana Richardson chose Y Area

My husband and I fell in love 25 years ago when I was visiting Lake Tahoe...so Tahoe was a romantic choice for our vacation home.

What makes this cottage unique

Our home is unique in the 1950's design and architecture. It is different than many of the cabins nearby with its cottage themed decor instead of all wood interior. Interior design is my passion and I am drawn to the eclectic warm and cozy feeling of cheerful colors that seems to take us back to a simple, family based lifestyle. For the knotty pine fan, we still have one room that holds true to that theme. Best of both worlds!

Perfect Winter Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We love, love, love this rental the moment we set foot in it! Lana's cottage had the beautiful characteristics of an older yet updated home with a unique layout. Our 3 daughters (12, 10 & 6) felt the upstairs area was a magical hideaway with plenty of room to play and explore. The surrounding grounds is such a winter wonderland with a large backyard to sled around and build snowmen. This rental was more than we had hoped for. Lana was so helpful, pleasant and quick to reply with any questions. The love and care she puts into her cottage is felt and evident throughout. We truly can't wait to come back:)

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much for your kind words and for being such a pleasure to work with. I am so glad that you and your family enjoyed your stay. Old houses can be truly magical, especially for children because they are usually more open with their imagination. It sounds like you and your family are similar to mine in our appreciation of the unique architecture and the history that welcomes you in older homes. We hope that you all will be able to visit again soon. :) Lana

We went to celebrate my daughters 8th birthday and Thanksgiving. The house supplied everything from a cork screw to sleds & bikes for outdoor play.

It was warm and welcoming, absolutely perfect!

Thank you!

  • 5 of 5

We had a very comfortable stay here at Lake Tahoe. Our family had been travelling for nearly 2 weeks and were so glad to find a "home" for a few days. Lana, thank you for all the extra lovely touches that made our stay so appealing!

I was also glad of the laundry facilities you offered with even the washing detergent supplied!

The beds were super comfortable and our children enjoyed having their own rooms.

The location was convenient too and we ate out locally and used the local grocery store for supplies.

Thank you again, we wish we could have stayed longer!

Regards, The Iacobellis Family.

Cozy and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We all enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The beds are super comfortable and the house suited us very well. We were able to have friends join us for dinner one evening and enjoyed watching the US Open on the large screen TV. For us, it was a relaxing place to decompress from our Burning Man experience.

Nice location, yet dangerous...

  • 3 of 5

PROS: Central location with 5 minutes to Camp Richardson, Raleys, etc. Nice kitchen with all necessary utensils, good size rooms, nice dining room. Rooms and baths were pretty clean.

CONS: The house is located on the main road with a very poor visibility, so when you are backing out from the garage, it is VERY dangerous. Also, because it is right on the main road, forget about any sleep, bc it is extremely noisy all the time. It was very warm in Tahoe and the house has no AC and no fans at either bedroom. The rooms were very stuffy. The fan in the living room was broken. The inside stairs to the 2nd floor were so narrow, that we had to walk sideways. The windows were very dirty with lots of cobwebs. The bed in the master bedroom was horrible.

Owner's Response: Elina, I am sorry that your stay was not as you had hoped. Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year, so I'm sure that the traffic was much worse than normal. We live 2 hours away and it was 109 degrees that weekend, so the mid-high 80's is very high and unusual for Tahoe. In the 14 years that we have owned the house, air conditioning was not needed, but if the weather continues to change, we will need to revisit that option. Thank goodness that it cools off to the 60's or lower each night to capture the beautiful cooler evening air. My husband and I were there in late August and he cleaned all of the outside Windows. I cleaned all of the French Door window panes and all of the kitchen inside windows and each of the window panes of all 3 doors leading to the outside. I apologize if we missed some, or if the weather caused them to be dirty again so fast. The ceiling fan in the living room was working when we left. Sometimes it gets turned off at the fan and just needs to be manually turned back on instead of the light switch? The only bedroom facing the street can be noisy. We are thankful that the other 2 bedrooms face the backyard. The front room may not be suitable for people who are sensitive to noise unless they have earplugs. The plus side to having a home in a busy location is that it is within walking distance to several good restaurants. Also, a plus is that during the winter, we do not get stranded in our driveway because our street is one of the first to be snow plowed. Old homes come with a lot of charm but were also built with different codes, so one of our staircases is narrow. We had the outside staircase from that floor completely replaced, so descending from that staircase if also an option. We installed a sturdy hand rail on that inside staircase when we first purchased the house to make it as safe as possible. I hope that overall you and your family enjoyed your trip and enjoyed the beauty of Lake Tahoe. Sincerely, Lana
