Cute, tired and dirty

Comfortable in many ways, but really is screaming for a thorough spring cleaning and some updating. Cleaners should be replaced as they only touch the place and it's been a long time since more has been done. Location is sweet with a view of the Superstition Mountains, quiet residential area, coyotes and bunnies passing through. Nice owner was receptive to my suggestions and comments so think it's worth a future visit

Full moon, darkness treasure

  • 5 of 5

Owners Kerry and Kathy are an integral part of the casita environment as are the four friendly horses I greeted every morning, the clucking chickens, the perpetual motion of cactus wrens, and the wonderful covey of quail who scurried around my front door. Kerry pointed out the Harris's Hawk on a telephone pole and the next day I saw it catch dinner and eat it from up there. Two juveniles flew around the area, also. I did not see the "resident" bobcat nor any javalina , but I was up during the full-moon night checking out the territory. Because of the way the loft windows are facing, you can do so from the bed, but I had to get myself outside to enjoy the almost complete darkness.

This treasure is its proximity to Superstition Mountain; I felt like I was not "in town" at all, yet it is an easy drive to many city amenities. For me, I was more interested in hiking trails east of Apache Junction: St. Cloud Trail, and Peralta trailhead, for example.

During this, my first stay in Arizona, I put hundreds of miles on my rental car as I scoped out areas for a return trip with my family. It was so comfortable right there that I almost hated to leave. Friends came over one evening and they, too, were impressed with the darkness, the wilderness feeling you get when you look at that foreboding mountain shadow in low-hanging clouds or...another day a soft red rock reflecting an orange/red sunset.

Other guests mentioned the spiral stairs, and if the muscles are tired after unaccustomed hikes, those skinny, curving steps can be a challenge. A couch turns into a bed, but your suitcase might still be upstairs. My advice: turn on light top and bottom and use the handrail, just to be extra safe.

If you have no need to speak to the owners, they disappear leaving you in your own little desert world to dream, think, enjoy and contemplate how lucky you are to be there.

Western themed home and a relaxed vibe

  • 4 of 5

This was the second time we rented this home - the best proof possible that we liked it a lot. It's on the eastern edge of Apache Junction with a really open, ranchlike feel and great views. The house is very easy to live in, with modern conveniences and a well equipped kitchen - a perfect base for hiking, which was our main activity, and easy to reach from Phoenix and its suburbs if you crave a city experience. The owners are easy to work with.
