Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4

Our farm cabin along the bike trail is small--only 425 sf, plus a loft and a large front porch. We had a hand in building it, along with our neighbor and a few other local craftsmen. It is designed to provide solitude and comfort. It includes all the true necessities; at the same time we have chosen to eliminate unnecessary noise and clutter. You will find hot water, a small refrigerator, and a cozy wood stove and wood supply. Gaze from our porch over the valley or take advantage of many recreational opportunities nearby. Hiking (especially Brice Creek Trail or Upper Trestle Falls Trail) is grand. Oregon Scenic Bikeways Covered Bridges ride takes scenic curves around Dorena Lake to and from our cabin to Cottage Grove (17 mi one way). Swimming, kayaking, picnicking... It is ideal for families or couples. If you choose to bike East of our cabin, beyond the bikeway, cars are few, the water is inviting, hiking abounds. In winter, white water kayakers enjoy Brice Creek.

Nearby Cottage Grove is a small town that offers Historic Main Street (where Animal House was filmed), pubs, restaurants, music venues, museums (including Bohemia Gold Mining Museum), murals, and parks. Within striking distance are several wineries (Saginaw Vinyard, Chateau Lorane, and many more). [Please be sure to review UNIQUE BENEFITS below. We want to be sure this cabin is for you.]

Many small farmers inhabit the area, including RUBY AND AMBER'S ORGANIC FARM, which specializes in draft horse workshops for aspiring farmers. We give special rates to attendees of draft horse workshops, so please let us know if that is you!

UNIQUE BENEFITS: We built our home to be simple and beautiful. We intentionally left things out that do not foster inner quiet. THEREFORE NO TELEPHONE, TV, OR DISHWASHER. ALSO, there is NO CELL service, although it can be found (for most carriers) at the Mercantile, about 2 miles away. YOU WILL FIND electricity, indoor plumbing, a microwave, apartment-sized refrigerator, an IPOD/MP3 docking station, and a guitar. We have a small library of carefully chosen books and board games.

About Dan and Cathie

We are semi-retired teachers who have grown children. We all have outdoor interests, and some of us are avid gardeners...even farmers. Dan is a third generation Oregonian, and Cathie's grandparents grew up in Oregon and Washington. We both attended University of Oregon. Our children are grown and engaged in diverse pursuits. Among their interests are: bicycle frame-building and mechanics, managing cropland and trees, salmon habitat monitoring, and providing service in the international sphere.

Dan and Cathie purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Dan and Cathie chose Dorena

Our family loves to bike, hike, back pack, swim, and cross country ski. We wanted rural property where we could be close to nature and also grow our own food. Our family has spent wonderful moments here and we hope you will enjoy it too.

What makes this cabin unique

We built our home to be simple and beautiful. We intentionally left out things that do not foster inner quiet. THEREFORE NO TELEPHONE, TV, OR DISHWASHER. However, there is electricity, indoor plumbing, a microwave, apartment sized refrigerator, an ipod/mp3 docking station, and a guitar. We have a small library of carefully chosen books and board games. Renters need to be aware that there is NO CELL SERVICE from our cabin, although it can be found at the Mercantile, about 2 miles away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dan and Cathie were friendly and amazing to work with, and their family cottage is just amazing! Their hard work shows in its craftsmanship. The property is a beautiful, private oasis. Not to mention that it is difficult to find places that accept dogs, and we were able to bring our dog, Duke, with us. It is the perfect place to get out of the hustle of everyday life and relax, read, listen to music, and talk around the dining room table with a glass of wine. Thanks for sharing your special property with us.

Cozy, Quiet Cabin Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is a delightfully quiet little piece of the world that we really enjoyed! No cell service is a real blessing. The wood stove kept us warm, the birds sang to us in the morning, and the baby cows next door were adorable. This is an excellent place to unwind. We sat in front of the stove with books and tea, we did some hiking, and we slept like babies in the loft. We loved it here, and we would love to come back!

Will stay again!

  • 5 of 5

This place has a little of everything depending on your mood. It rained one day, so we just chilled and relaxed in the cozy cabin, played games, listened to music (bring your own audio device with offline music). Then the next day we wanted to do a hike, thankfully Dan and Cathie stocked the cabin with lots of info on how to find close-by hikes. Check out the Brice Creek Trail up to Trestle Falls! The cabin was clean and had most everything you need, my wife was very impressed with the seasoning level of the cast iron skillets. It was a perfect way to spend my Birthday weekend and would recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable getaway.

Overall I enjoyed my stay. The cabin itself is very quaint and comfortable.

Thank you Dan and Cathie for sharing your farm cabin. I enjoyed my stay except for the mice in the "water heater" closet. Probably no one has told you about them BUT they really are nesting quite comfortably. I on the other hand did not. :) Thank you again for a memorable experience.

Also the code for the gate and house are incorrect. The caretakers arrived as I was trying to unlock the gate otherwise I would have been "up a crick with our a paddle." They had the correct code #.

0704 is incorrect.

Also the written instructions say to "take a left BEFORE the bridge onto Lower Brice Creek Road. It needs to read AFTER the bridge. It took me a couple turn arounds to figure it out.

Ok...That's all the help I have for you. Enjoy your day :)

A great cozy time

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was everything we hoped for! It was secluded and cozy, and we loved relaxing in front of the wood stove :) There was lots of space outside for our daughter to run around and play and inside we had everything we needed! Highly recommend this cabin for anyone who wants to get away and spend a few days without phones, TV or internet.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review. What you liked is what we are always working to provide for our guests. Throw in some great hiking and bicycling and swimming in the river in the summer, and live music and good food in Cottage Grove, and that's our big-picture goal. Dan and Cathie

Perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was absolutely perfect for a long winter weekend of reading, sitting by the fire, cooking, and hiking. Waking up to the foggy valley every morning was a dream. I can't wait to come back when the weather is warm so we can check out all the swimming holes nearby!

Owner's Response: Our farm cabin is about getting away from the techno-centric, high-stress world to experience the natural world directly. It's very relaxing, very restorative. Most people who stay at our place love being "unplugged."

Wonderful getaway in the country

  • 5 of 5

Our second time staying in this peaceful cabin and we'll be back. Great amenities including NO tv, internet or cell service. Just what's needed to unwind. Close to hiking trails - we hiked up in the Umpqua Forest only a half hour away if that. If you want to get away from it all this is the place to go. Dan and Cathie have done a great job making the cabin cozy and comfortable with everything you'll need to unplug.

Car: necessary

We are situated in the Row (rhymes with 'cow') River valley. (Beware that much of this valley has no cell service.) This little-known river has loads of great swimming holes. The Covered Bridges Scenic Bikeway goes from Cottage Grove almost to our door. Next to us are scenic pastures. February through April, Brice Creek is expert level kayaking. (A car shuttle would be easy, since the road is never too far away from the water.) Lots of lovely hikes in the area (ex. Brice Creek and Upper Trestle Falls in Umpqua NF). Comparatively few people fish the upper river, though it is reputed to be quite good for trout.
