San Angel is a quiet and charming town inside Mexico City. Pebble-stoned narrow streets, colonial houses, parks, plazas, colonial churches, museums and many other destinations make it a must stop in your visit to Mexico City.

Mexico City’s Secretary of Tourism recently named the San Angel neighborhood a Barrio Magico (Magic Neighborhood). San Angel, located 12km (7.4 miles) southwest of the historic center, was once a retreat for wealthy city residents. Cobblestone streets, plazas, gardens and elegant estates are reminiscent of the neighborhood’s rich colonial past.

San Angel is home to monuments, historic residences, a former Dominican monastery, a cultural center housed in what was once a municipal palace and several interesting museums. Among them are the Risco House Museum (Plaza San Jacinto 15) with its impressive 18th century talavera tile fountain, the Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo Studio Museum (Diego Rivera 2 and Altavista 4) and the Anahuacalli Museum (Calle del Museo 150) that houses yet another of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera’s studios.

You’ll find several colorful markets, art galleries and shops scattered throughout the neighborhood and a good selection of restaurants, bars and cafes, many with inviting open-air terraces. San Angel’s Bazar Sabado (Saturday market), held in a two-story building located just off the main Plaza San Jacintos, makes an ideal place to browse an array of quality handicrafts from across Mexico.

Throughout the year the San Angel neighborhood hosts several festivals and cultural celebrations including the San Angel Flower Festival and the Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen. San Angel is also the site of some of Mexico City’s most impressive alters during the annual Day of the Dead holiday.

The nearby residential neighborhood of Chimalistac has yet to become a top tourist destination, but what it lacks in the way of visitor attractions, it makes up for in Mexican traditions and colonial-era charm. With an atmosphere that’s more reminiscent of a small Mexican town than a big city neighborhood, Chimalistac feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Mexico City.

Host profile image
My name is Juan Gabriel Solorzano and I am a Mexican Architecht who has lived in San Angel all his life. I know this neighbourhood well, and it is with great pride that I welcome guests here. As an architect, I pay special attention to the design and functionality of space. I trust you will find in my place a combination of comfort and elegance. I particularly enjoy landscape architecture and have built lush gardens into my properties. What I like most form VRBO-Home Away is the opportunity to show guests a little bit of the Mexico that I love.

Why they chose this property

We hope you enjoy this magic place as much as we do. We have a very long tradition of hosting guests. Since our grandparents moved to San Angel, we have always share our place with people from all over the world.
In order to continue with this tradition we will ask you to take care of our home as if yours.
San Angel is a special and interesting place full of history. It was declared historical monument in 1987 due to its beauty and culture. Walking around its cobbled small streets is a real pleasure and a journey to the past.
Although this place has changed through time, what you see at Garden House San Angel has been part of this amazing neighbourhood for more than 70 years.

What makes this property unique

Mexico City has been transformed into a great metropoli where the buildings, traffic, lots of people and noise of the horns and ambulances, little by little make you feel very stressed. At the end of the day what you are looking for is a little oasis where to refugee from the tumult of the great city.
When you arrive to our place, you start discovering the cobblestoned streets where cars go at slow speed. The very ancient trees filter the
rays of the sun creating a completly different ambiance from the rest of the city. Those two hundred meters that you walk from the big avenue towards our home, start to relax yourself.
When you open the door you discover a great garden that through small pathways take you to the different suites.
Here there is complete silence. You can hear the singing of birds. The squirrels jumping from one tree to the other. And at night it is completely silent.
We do no accept either children or pets to respect the rest of the people staying with us. It is a place for adults where in its terraces you can quietly have a cup of tea or coffee . Or if you prefer read or simply enjoy the garden.
