Hudson Valley - 2-Bedroom Retreat on 120-Acre Farm

Overview

About the property

Historic Renovated Cottage, sleeps up to 6

This 2-bedroom sunny cottage - originally built as a schoolhouse in 1847 and completely renovated in 2013- sleeps up to six people and provides guests a getaway on a 120-acre farm.

The cottage works well for friends' reunions, families with children, and as a peaceful, romantic escape. Writers have used the cottage for quiet inspiration. Climbers and hikers use it as a base for getting to the Cliffs and Mohonk Preserve

Inside the Schoolhouse, the clean cozy design will leave you rested. Windows and skylights light the great, wood-beamed room where there is a pull out double couch, a renovated eat-in kitchen, and a dining table for six. The kitchen has cooking utensils, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. The Cottage has cable, a flat screen, Blu Ray, and WIFI.

The Master bedroom looks out on the farm and the second bedroom has twins that can be pushed together to make a king. There is an in-between room that has a stackable washer/dryer and an additional single bed. There are clean linens, towels, and fresh soap.

Just outside the Schoolhouse, guests enjoy using a Weber Grill for barbeques and sitting on the Adirondack chairs and taking in the acres.

Depending on instructors' availability, beginners to advanced English riders can take lessons in our year-round, indoor riding barn or outdoors as they look up at the Shawangunk cliffs. Whether you ride or not, you're sure to enjoy walking the carriage trails, meeting the donkeys, ponies, and horses. Amateur photographers will love how the sun lights the farm the mountains, and the animals, etc.

The Cottage is a perfect location to enjoy the Hudson Valley. It is less than 5 minutes to the Mohonk Preserve trailheads and less than 10 minutes to Main Streets in New Paltz and Gardiner with great nearby restaurants and shopping.

About Tom

Although we never imagined living on a farm - it is one of the prettiest places on earth. We love nature and never tire of cliff views, the changing light, and the chance to see hawks, wild turkey, deer, etc.

New Paltz is a phenomenal place to live with a great vibe in town and nice people who love outdoor adventures, art, and delicious food. We used to live in San Francisco and thought we'd never live anywhere else, until we got here.

Come visit our farm. It's a great place to be. If you've got kids, they will love meeting the donkeys, horses, ponies, chickens, and our friendly dogs: Charlie, Oscar, and Olive.

Tom purchased this house in 2007

Why Tom chose Hudson Valley

The dead-on views of the Gunks. Early morning sun hits the rocks and the day begins fresh. At night we hear crickets, owls, frogs, and in the summer, we see fireflies as night sets. Hard to imagine a prettier place than LaLuna Farm.

What makes this house unique

The Schoolhouse Cottage has been a fun project. We like to make places nice...in this case, we wanted the Cottage to be the type of clean, quiet retreat we always wish for when we travel. We hope that our guests feel at home and enjoy the farm, the walking trails, the horses and animals. The Cottage is a perfect base for exploring the Hudson Valley.

Don't hesitate! Lovely cottage, great location, wonderful hosts.

  • 5 of 5

The Schoolhouse cottage provided a wonderful getaway for our family with two small children. With the cottage as home base we were able to explore the area, taking in New Paltz, Mohank Preserve, hikes and surrounding areas. The cottage itself is very comfortable and lovely. Tom and Julie were wonderful hosts, making us feel comfortable to explore the grounds of their horse ranch. Each day we said hello to the animals even got to enjoy a dozen of the farm fresh eggs. I can't recommend this lovely spot enough.

Owner's Response: We are lucky to have great guests! No exception here. As we often say, we are the happiest when our guests are the happiest. In this case, a family took advantage of New Paltz, Mohonk, being at the farm, and enjoying the Cottage. Look forward to having them return. We are close enough and just far away enough from New York!

Weekend retreat with friends + little ones

  • 5 of 5

Great place. Met up with a couple of friends for a long weekend. We brought our toddler and baby, they brought their toddler. The little ones (and we, equally, as the adults) loved touring around the farm to meet the animals and the very friendly hosts. The house was very comfortable and exceeded our expectations. Great location - half way between the Gunks and New Paltz. We were planning on a weekend of cross country skiing, but ended up hiking due to warm weather, which was equally as enjoyable. We look forward to coming back for a longer stay.

Owner's Response: We were delighted that this family and their friends currently enjoyed the Cottage as a site for their reunion, but also that they enjoyed the farm and its prime location between New Paltz and the Gunks. We hope they come back! Tom & Julie

Nature retreat

  • 5 of 5

My son and I loved our stay here. The rooms are filled with light and the furnishings are artistic and comfortable. We took some walks on local trails and roads which were covered with snow. These walks were inspiring and contributed to a very restorative 3 days. Thank you, Tom, for some tips about the trails.

Owner's Response: So glad to have Hilda and her son visit. They got some quiet time, hiking, visits to nearby restaurants--and enjoyed the calm fun of midweek New Paltz.

There is so much to do - every day. Here's a brief list:

Apple-picking; pumpkin picking; Art: Storm King Art Center and DIA Art Museum; Brew Houses, wine tasting, a whiskey distillery nearby; Cuisine...there are loads of restaurants to explore on both sides of the Hudson River given our proximity to the CIA, the Culinary Institute of America.

HISTORY: Huguenot Street - the oldest stand of functioning stone houses in America; Hyde Park is home to FDR's presidential library and Valkill where Eleanor Roosevelt lived.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: Walkway over the Hudson - a famous and fun state park for walking, roller-blading, jogging, etc. Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park offer amazing carriage trails for hiking, and premier rock climbing.

It's hard to capture the area in a few words. Safe to say, the Mid-Hudson Valley is a piece of paradise.
