About the property

2 Bedrooms+, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 6

Enjoy our 5 acre secluded retreat at the edge of the Forest, where you can look out across a meadow to a stunning view of the Peaks. Our home has solar power and a rainwater collection system, and is at the edge of the ponderosa pine forest, which means you can hike, mountain bike, or cross country ski right out the door, or drive a few miles to a network of classic trails. A great home base for adventures. The cabin is located 3 miles from Snowbowl Road, which takes you to downhill skiing in winter and awesome hiking in summer. We are only an hour from the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Meteor Crater and Anasazi ruins (Wapatki & Walnut Canyon), and 17 minutes from downtown Flagstaff. Our guesthouse (aka, the Roost) can be a base for all your northern Arizona adventures.

The Roost has new furniture and amenities, including 1 queen bed, one queen sleeper sofa, and three twin beds. Its upstairs location next to pines gives it a treehouse feel, perfect for viewing the Peaks and birdwatching. Resident elk and deer commonly graze on the property.

The guesthouse is attached to our main house, but is completely separated and has its own entrance and parking area. It has a private sandstone patio with outdoor grill, table, and chairs.

About Suzanne

I'm a 12th generation Arizona native, who grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and moved to Flagstaff in 1975. I always wanted to build a cabin in the forest from the ground up, and had the opportunity to do so in the early 1990's, when this special land was sold to me by an old cowboy. I tried to build as sustainably as I could, with many local materials, and have a rainwater harvesting system as well as grid-tied solar power.

We have traveled all over North America, lived for nearly a decade on two other continents, and still feel the Southwest is the best place to call home. We love the variety of landscape, ecology, and climate within a few hour's travel, as well as the Native American influence in this area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

One month in heaven. Loved the setting and the opportunity to enjoy nature and all it holds. Such a great place and all your homey touches made our vacation such a dream.

Awesome location, spotlessly clean and fantastic views

  • 5 of 5

My wife and two sons spent four nights here and lived every minute of our stay. Being just north of flagstaff allowed for a quick drive to town for dinner when we were lazy, but it seems a million miles away due to the national forest next door. We were able to make a quick day trip to Sedona as well as a beautiful drive to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. We were always looking forward to the rerun to the roost for a relaxing evening. The patio is perfect for relaxing while the sun sets and then the Milky Way lights up like majic. The beds are super comfortable and the water was hotter than any other cabin I've stayed in. Even the plates were above average as they were made by some artist. The only potential downfall to be aware of but my no means a deal breaker is that the main bedroom wall doesn't go all the way to the ceiling so you don't get total privacy. Lights in the den flow into the master bedroom even with the doors shut. It's a non issue if you a couple but with a family it was a minor bother. That being said, this is still an amazing place that's one of my favorite places we've rented.

Better than expected, a fantastic getaway amongst the pines

  • 5 of 5

I would definitely recommend this rental! Our family of 5 enjoyed every minute of it. We used it as a base for visiting the Grand Canyon, hiking around Flagstaff, and visiting the Meteor Site. It's completely quiet except for the breeze flowing thru the pines! The place was very clean, really well stocked, and well-designed. There's a big yard where my kids played ball and a lovely two-person tree swing that we didn't want to leave. The location is about 15min outside of town which was fine for us. We stocked up on groceries and grilled steaks on the grill and sipped red wine; lovely! We were really impressed with the supplies provided. You can have evening wine or morning coffee and take in the view of the SAN Francisco peaks from the patio or rental inside. Well done!!

A Spectacular Retreat !!

  • 5 of 5

The Roost is a perfect get away. It is secluded and in such a beautiful location with a pristine view of the mountains. It is very accessible to all the popular sites one chooses to visit. It was very comfortable and super clean. Had all the comforts of home. Suzanne and Faith thank you for being such great stewards of the land. We look forward to returning for another visit. This rental is highly recommended.
