Panoramic views of the ocean, Kona coast, tree canopy, landscaped yard, and surrounding pastures will amaze. The cool 1,200' elevation of Holualoa, the open lanais, spacious bedrooms, and a well-appointed kitchen are sure to please. The rural feeling of Hale Akala and the large established yard with old plantings of avocado, ulu (breadfruit,) fig, starfruit (carambola,) dragon fruit, and banana is guaranteed to take you away from life's stresses and please the senses.

Four bedrooms to choose from, of which three have their own private en suite. The fourth bedroom, with a queen-sized bed, is on the lower level of the home and adjacent to the TV/sitting room. Three sets of French doors extend to a terraced area in the yard, providing the room beautiful light. The middle (and main-floor) level consists of kitchen, dining, living room, two lanais, and two bedrooms with queen-sized beds. Upper-level master-suite has a king-sized bed, two window seats, single sleigh bed and pull out twin ottoman to sleep up to four adults in beds. The two wide window seats can sleep a young child. The sleigh day-bed area is just outside a door and separate from the master bedroom. In total, one king, three queens, and one single will accommodate eleven people in beds. Two ottoman twin pull out options for overflow sleep two more and the window seats allow for two children more. Lower floor accesses the yard and outdoor cooking terrace via stairs from the kitchen as well as from the ocean-side lanai.

A charming 1940-era guest cottage with a screened-in lanai, galley kitchen (toaster, microwave, electric kettle, fridge) and shower bath, privately situated across the driveway, sleeps two in a queen bed, allowing larger parties to use the entire property. Please scroll down the page to Owner Information to view this additional VRBO listing, #643478. Separate rates apply.

Take a leisurely stroll through the yard and grounds which includes a sixty year old coffee orchard to the south. Coming in summer 2018, coffee will be roasted in the family's 37 pound Sivetz air-roaster in the roast hale (house in Hawaiian) on property. Take home fresh 100% Kona coffee to friends and family. The expansive yard to the north is super for bocce, throwing a football or frisbee, sitting on the lawn chairs to take in a sunset spectacle and will delight star-gazers, daydreamers and cloud watchers in their appreciation of outdoor offerings. Lastly, a comfortable seating area on terrace below the kitchen sports a gas grill and a teak dining set, certain to entertain the outdoor dining enthusiast.

Three friendly dogs and a social cat live on the property and will greet you and say hello on many occasions as you come and go.

About Lisa

Aloha! I'm Lisa, Hawaii-born (raised in Honolulu and Hilo) and have lived on this property for thirty-four years, raising four children with my husband, Christian. Lisa purchased this estate in 1945

Why Lisa chose Hōlualoa

Hale Akala is a special piece of Kona. Built in 1895 by Manuel Silveira Goularte, a Portuguese rancher who raised his thirteen children here. It was utilized by cowboys of the neighboring Greenwell family's Palani Ranch, to re-supply and feed ranch-hands in the 1920 and 30s. It was abandoned and left to the elements before WWII, eventually being purchased by Christian's grandparents, William and Margaret of Honolulu, in 1945. Wanting to retire to Kona (where Margaret's great-grandparents, Reverend Asa and Lucy Thurston--part of the company of first Christian missionaries to the Islands who arrived in Kailua-Kona (the seat of Hawaii's ruling Kamehameha reign) in 1820 and lived until the 1860s) they chose the cool uplands of Holualoa. Hale Akala has been in the family for four generations. A few cattle roam the surrounding acres of pasture and you'll hear an occasional bull bellowing from nearby Palani Ranch, in the quiet evening hours.

What makes this estate unique

The spacious nature of the property, old established landscaping, dry-stack rock walls (a ranching heritage feature here in Kona,) pathways, fruit trees, flower beds, along with the home's architectural appeal will make you feel held and comforted.

Guestbook comments from the owner

From the moment we walked through the door, I felt all the tension just slide from my shoulders. We were surrounded by beauty, both inside and out. Our host, Lisa, thought of everything we could possibly have wanted: the freshest fruit, right from the garden/trees, books about the island, even Hawaiian music CDs...and the best coffee EVER. She is a wonderful resource about the property and the history of the island.

The house has lots of art and is tastefully appointed, but still feels like a place where you can relax. The animals are part of the welcome committee.

Lisa, mahalo for a wonderful visit. Aloha to you and Christian and Mariella, Hobbs, Maca and co. See you next year!

Amazing stay at this beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 9 nights and even that did not feel long enough. The grounds are beautiful and tropical and the house is spacious and wonderfully and tastefully decorated. It was exactly what we were looking for with some history and culture, but with all the modern conveniences and a spacious kitchen. Everything we required was provided in the house. Our family thoroughly enjoyed their time here. Lisa was extremely helpful and welcoming throughout our stay as well as helping us prepare for our trip with useful information. We hope to visit again in the future.

Paradise on Earth!

  • 5 of 5

We totally enjoyed our second-stay at your fabulous Hale Akala; everything was perfect and just as we remembered it from late 2016. I would give you 10 stars, if possible! I'm sorry that we only got to chat briefly with Lisa near the end of our stay, But she is wonderful and gracious host! Unfortunately, we were only able to get away for 7 days, instead of 9, but I feel like this visit was more relaxed as we were able to enjoy the house more, rather than trying to see so many sights on the island. We took in a whale-watching excursion, this time (actually the reason we came in February), but mostly spent time at the many-splendored beaches nearby. Our favorite turned out to be Manini'owali; reached after a short hike over lava rock, the water was so tranquil and the smooth sand a delight for the children. I think we were there at least four out of the seven days of our visit! It was such fun to feel somewhat familiar with the Kona side of the island; no one wanted to leave when the day came. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for allowing us to "live" in your home again -- it's the closest thing to Paradise we've ever experienced. I can say with a certainty that Hale Akala will never be crossed off our Bucket List. We'll be back!

Owner's Response: I am always so happy when guests enjoy our home and more so when a return guest finds it as nice as the first time stay. It makes all my efforts worth-while and so much more rewarding. Really, its the best part of my job!

A beautiful, historic home in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

My adult family from various locations in the country all met to have our vacations together on the Big Island. I, the father of the group, choose Hale Akala for our stay because of its wonderful location and it's amenities. I was concerned when we my wife quietly walked from one beautiful, comfortable room to another in silence! Did I mess up again? She finally broke the silence with one word "spectacular!" And everyone agreed!

What a fabulous place to spend a vacation on a fabulous island. You can't go wrong!

Beautiful home with lots of charm!

  • 5 of 5

This home, along with the property, was absolutely beautiful! Every aspect of the house was well-thought out; it comes fully equipped with anything and everything one might need (especially the kitchen). Even a bag of the estate's Kona coffee was generously provided.

Speaking of the kitchen..."wow" sums it up. Not only is it well-stocked, but the view is amazing. My favorite part of my stay here is enjoying the stunning view from the kitchen every morning while having my coffee.

Lisa was a wonderful host. She was readily available to address any concerns we had. My party and I especially appreciated her going above and beyond to accommodate a last minute request due to our late flight. Mahalo Lisa, for allowing us this opportunity to make such great memories while staying on your beautiful property!

I will definitely stay here again and will be recommending this property to others.
