The hillside location provides expansive views across the valley as well as west to the Bridgewater hills. The sunsets are magnificent sitting on the expansive second floor deck. A brook runs through the property feeding a gorgeous, natural pond below the house.
The house sits back from a quiet town road in South Pomfret, just over the Woodstock line. It is situated in the middle of a gently sloping 5 acre field, affording expansive views. The property works wonderfully for those seeking serenity or an active base of operations for a multitude of year-around sports in the area.
My husband and I live in the Boston area. We raised our three, grown sons taking trips to Vermont often for both skiing adventures as well as spring and fall weekends. My husband bought this house in the late 1970's before we even met and I don't think he could have guessed how significant a purchase this was! Our family still chooses to gather for the Christmas holiday annually in South Pomfret. Our boys now live in Manhattan and in San Francisco, but it is our house in Vermont that brings us all back together!
Nina Hunnewell purchased this house in 1977
The gorgeous views and the peaceful setting simply can not be beat! The house site is perfect for relaxing and also for taking off on many different athletic pursuits during any season of the year. The close proximity to Woodstock town (less than 3 miles) and the total serenity of the location combine to restore and rejuvenate almost overnight! The massive glass sliders in almost all the rooms allows ample sunlight and the western views and sunsets are superb! The open fields are refreshing and the hiking trails abundant. Our pond is a wonderful resource for swimming in the summer or skating in the winter months. Woodstock town has so much to offer from cultural activities to entertainment; the charm of New England is tangible in this idyllic village.
The open floor plan brings our family and friends together in a very relaxed and comfortable setting - on both the first and second floors. We love the concept of all being together in front of the fire, cooking in the kitchen or watching TV. Our furnishings are comfortable and low-key, the ceilings upstairs high, and the views stunning. Ours is a happy house!
Deer Run is obviously a well loved home and is certainly well cared for. The owners were not only prompt in response to inquiries but also touched base on several occasions during my month long stay in order to ascertain that all was going well with the house and property. This capacious home has absolutely everything one could ask for from cooking utensils in the kitchen to monogrammed towels in the bathrooms to artful, craftsman style furniture in the living room to those commandingly stunning views from the deck. I enjoyed every single day in the house! And, needless to say, I certainly enjoyed the wonderful property as well. The pretty pond is a great place to watch the Great Blue Heron and the Merganser Ducks or to quietly read on a Fall afternoon. The open fields surrounding the house were also very scenic especially in the mornings when the crows flocked in for feeding! The ski-mobile trail up the hill in the woods was a nice trail on which not only to look for wildflowers and mushrooms but also to find the solace and communion with nature that is quintessential Vermont to me.
We've rented this house twice and love the experience! The wide open windows make us feel like we are living right in the outdoors. It's a house that feels like home, nicely appointed, comfortable with plenty of space for a big family. The best part is the big beautiful porch that just invites you to look out over the green hills of vermont and wait for the deer to show up in the field. Just a 7 minute drive into the Village of Woodstock, VT. One of the prettiest little towns in America.....which also boasts a National Park!
The house was one of the most comfortable and enjoyable vacation houses I've ever been in. It was spacious, extremely well-furnished, with a wonderful view of hills and forests. The dirt road that the house was located on provided plenty of walking opportunities, and the on-property pond was delightful and clean. Woodstock was only a short drive, as were other small towns, farms and country stores.
This beautiful, comfortable and exceptionally well stocked home provided for a relaxing vacation for our family. The owners are extremely friendly and accommodating - we appreciated that the beds were made and the towels hung in the bathrooms for us upon arrival. The kids loved checking out the salamanders and frogs in the pond and we all admired the morning and evening skies - truly panoramic views from the deck. The kitchen is very well equipped - had everything we needed and then some. The owners thought of everything - providing maps and fliers for local hikes and attractions as well as a list of contacts. We loved hiking up Mount Peg, visiting Quechee Gorge, checking out Billings Farm and the carriage roads across the way. We also enjoyed eating at the Worthy Kitchen, Brick Oven Trattoria and Melaza. We spent a nice afternoon at Silver Lake State Park, took. And lucky for us, we were there for Bookstock's used book sale! Thanks to Nina and Og for true hospitality and a wonderful vacation.
Woodstock, Vermont is often voted the most picturesque village in New England! Town is less than 3 miles from our house. Shopping is wonderful, there are many one of a kind boutiques. Simon Pearce glass blowing, store and restaurant is less than five miles away. Other restaurant options are fabulous too! The movie theater and library in Woodstock are terrific. Billings Farm and Museum is a gem! There are many hiking trails all around the area, and the road biking is exceptional starting right from our door! There is a good health clinic right in town, as well as a super market for groceries and the terrific West Woodstock Market for specialty and organic foods. Hanover, NH is a popular destination with the art museum at Dartmouth College and many more shops and restaurants to choose from.
