About the property

Loft-style Living Area with Modern Kitchen, large balcony, garden and pool.

Set in a tiny hamlet with stunning views in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the Ariege, SW France,The Barn at Bentefarine offers the ultimate escape-from-it-all rural retreat.

Oozing barn charm the property, which was converted in 2011 has comfortable accommodation for up to 5 people & is both child and baby-friendly although it is equally suitable as an idyllic romantic retreat for two.

There are two bedrooms; one double the other a twin which can have an extra child's bed or cot as necessary.

We are 'baby-friendly' with loads of equipment to lend including books & toys.

The accommodation is arranged 'upside down' with the 2 bedrooms, large bathroom (with shower and bath) and separate WC on the ground floor. A wide beech staircase leads up to the beautiful light first floor where there is a well-equipped kitchen with farmhouse dining table and chairs, living area with sofa, log-burning stove and original A-frame beams. Go through one of three double oak French windows to the huge south-facing decked balcony where you can sunbathe and dine al fresco overlooking the wooded hills and mountains beyond.

Visitors to the barn are invited to share the owner's 8x5m pool which is securely fenced and not heated.

The Area: With views of the ruins of Montsegur the hamlet of Bentefarine lies in the heart of the Cathar Region. Other ruins such as Lagarde, Puivert and Roquefixade are all close by. The hamlet of Bentefarine consists of 7 dwellings, the majority of the inhabitants are resident year-round with only the Barn itself and one other house built as holiday homes. We all consider ourselves very priviledged to live in such a beautiful location.

The beauty of the hamlet is that it feels very out-of-the-way despite there being many amenities within close proximity; the nearby village of Leran just a 5 minute drive away, has a daily market with bakery every day except Monday. There is a superb restaurant for evening dining in the Abbaye Chateau de Camon. Supermarkets can be found in Laroque D'Olmes just 8 kms away and in Mirepoix, 12kms away .The Monday market at Mirepoix is lovely.

Mirepoix: The ancient city of Mirepoix, a medieval bastide town the centre of which seems almost unchanged since the early 1400s, is home to a weekly market on Mondays where local produce can be bought direct from the producers. There are also supermarkets, gift shops, chemists, tabacs, bars and many restaurants. The city plays host to a ream of weekend festivals and events. Please visit the local Office deTourisme website for details.

The beautiful Lac Montbel just 7 minutes drive away has a sandy beach, restaurant, plenty of shade and a lifeguard in July and August and has always been our favourite place to cool off in summer. Near the village of Montbel, there is a second pebbly beach with stunning views of the mountains and a beach bar. Both places have pedalos for hire. The lake is home to an organic trout farm and the local sailing club.

Just a 20 minute drive away is another lovely lake at Puivert. It is very popular with families with small children and has a playground and cafe.

In the Spring months the area is home to many rare wild orchids.

In the Autumn we like to forage for mushrooms.

About Lisa Hope

We are a family of five who moved to France from SW London in 2005 in search of a calmer existence and somewhere beautiful to bring up our children..we found it here in the hamlet of Bentefarine.

Lisa Hope purchased this house in 2005

Why Lisa Hope chose Saint-Quentin-la-Tour

My husband is a keen fisherman and I love to ski and ride horses; we were looking for a rural location with proximity to both mountains and the Mediterranean. We had originally thought we would go to Northern Catalunya but when we came over the border and looked around at this little corner of France we knew it would be our home.

What makes this house unique

The views of the mountains, the peace and quiet, starry nights and long Summer days make this place very special.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Had almost 3 weeks at the Barn-a wonderful, relaxing and peaceful holiday.

Highlights include:

-evenings on the balcony, dinner and watching the sunsets. The ever changing shades and colours, the cows, sheep, hares and beautiful skies were just captivating.

-star-gazing after dark, simply amazing on a clear night.

-cycling for 30 miles and not having one car pass you through the beautiful French villages.

-fresh fruit, veg, cheese and honey at any of the markets.

If you are after a tranquil, serene and charming holiday then this is the place to come.

The pool is securely fenced and not heated as we have not found it necessary; the pool has a grey liner which attracts and holds the heat most efficiently. It is in a quiet area of our garden and quite private. We have plenty of baby equipment, if you need it; cot, stairgate, baby bouncer, steriliser, to name just a few. Please contact us if you have any specific requirements.

Stunning and relaxing location, great host, fantastic for young children

  • 5 of 5

Quiet rural barn with an ideal open plan living space with child friendly balcony and outdoor eating area onto a very scenic view. Range of toys for our 6months baby and 2 year old was fantastic and Lisa was excellent in correspondence leading up to the stay to make sure that bedding for them was suitable (choice of bassinet/travel cost/toddler beds with guards). Lots of helpful kids equipment and use of pool and small playground very helpful.

Double bed was also very big and comfortable for us.

Lots of nice daytrips nearby (lake swimming, market towns) and we would definitely stay here again.

We had a really good time.

Pool is really nice, with a lot of inflatables.

Our little babygirl (2 at arrival) found a lot of toys at the Barn.

The terras has an amazing view and it is really nice to spend time on!

Rooms are big, bathroom was perfect with rainshower and separate bath.

All was very spacious!

Excellent house and location, great holiday

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the Barn and it was exactly as promised. The property was clean and immaculately maintained. The views are amazing and the balcony was a great place to take them in. The beds were really comfy and the quiet location really helped us all sleep. There were plenty of toys to entertain our 4 yr old son, when we were in the house. The satellite TV service didn't work, which upset my husband who was keen to follow the football, but really it wasn't an issue. We went to Lac Montbel but preferred the lac at Puivert. The Monday market at Mirepoix was fun. When the weather wasn't that good, we had a great time at the dinosaur museum in Esperaza. I would recommend this property 100 %

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. So sorry that the TV wasn't working I'm afraid it's due to the new satellite but we're hoping a larger dish may help.

All creature comforts

  • 5 of 5

Immaculate, everything we needed. Comfortable beds, lovely bathroom which was warm and cosy. Nice touch with shampoo and shower gel already in shower (so thoughtful as normal supermarket brand, not tiny 'hotel' sample size). Milk, butter, bread, homemade jams left for us, along with coffee and good tea. Upstairs kitchen and living room spacious and well equipped. Beautiful view and chairs on balcony to enjoy it! Our hosts, Lisa and Bas made us very welcome, very comfortable and best of all, we enjoyed the sunshine, peace and quiet and views of the Pyrenees. Our children loved it, too. We will be back as there are still so many things to do in the area. Bravo!

A wonderful property in an amazing location

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent a wonderfully relaxing 2 weeks at this amazing location. The property exceeded our expectations in terms of space, views, facilities and feel. The location is in a very quiet rural setting (a car is essential). Within walking distance are very pleasant river walks. Within a few minutes drive are a number of lovely villages and small towns, eg Mirepoix. A little further afield are the amazing Pyrenees and other places of interest such as Foix & Carcassonne. The pool was a great place to relax on the hot days and the balcony a great place to watch the distant herd of cows and the far high mountains (with a G&T of course!). I would have no hesitation in recommending this property and the wider location as a great holiday destination. Kev & Deb Aug/Sept 2015

Cycling:The area is very popular amongst cyclists and the Tour de France passes through the Ariege almost every year.

Golf: Golf course at Carcassonne.

Ski: The nearest ski resort can be seen from the balcony. Les Monts D'Olmes is a typical small Pyrenean resort which is suitable for all levels of skier with affordable ski hire and ski passes. Only 45 minutes from the Barn, it's a great day out in the winter months and an ideal resort for learning to ski.

If you're looking for something more challenging there is Ax-Les-Thermes just 1hr 15 away or even Andorra
