Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday cottage in Monteensudder - West Cork Hunting Lodge

Luxury - Sleeps 8 - Golf - Fishing - Sailing - Walking - Very Private

Utter perfection for all seasons. This wonderful thatched lodge is located 1km from the West Cork town of Glengarriff, in beautiful surroundings of 2 acres of tropical gardens and lawns. The comfortable lounge is the perfect place to laze around the cosy log fire after a day's touring. The well equipped large kitchen, ideal for the chef, leads to a wonderful conservatory which opens out to the furnished terraces and gardens complete with BBQ. There is a large master en suite bedroom on this level as well as guest WC. The upper level has a huge master en suite bedroom with Burmese bed, Persian rugs and wonderful views over the river and gardens. The spacious green double bedroom with in-room wash basin has great views to the mountains. The twin bedded blue room has en suite WC and views over the bridge and river. There is a superbly appointed bathroom on this level complete with roll top bath. This luxurious house has it all and is highly recommended!

The Grounds: The House, a most enchanting thatched cottage, was originally built as a hunting lodge for the Earls of Bantry. Carefully restored to a high standard this captivating residence is now a unique self-catering destination and has everything one might reasonably expect in a luxurious country house. Unrivalled tranquillity of setting, period furniture, log fires and the easy elegance of this home create an atmosphere which is warm and welcoming throughout all seasons. The Grounds comprise almost fifty acres in total with the garden of three acres blending almost seamlessly into the surrounding woodland and meadows. The island on which the house stands comprises just under two acres of landscaped gardens and lawns on which many specimen trees and shrubs flourish in the subtropical climate for which this area is renowned. The island is connected to the rest of the property by three timber bridges, which give access the many paths and trails, offering plenty of opportunities to explore.

Glengarriff: Glengarriff is a renowned destination for the discerning tourist with its spectacular scenery, dramatic history and relaxed people, this lovely town is seen by many to exemplify the attractions of Ireland’s beautiful South-West and is popular with domestic as well as international visitors. An exceptionally mild climate due to the benign warming waters of the gulf stream encourages the luxuriant plant life for which the area is famous and with the rugged Caha Mountains sweeping down to the sea, the scenery is breathtaking. Glengarriff village, known as the gateway to the Beara Peninsula, is a lively and picturesque spot with a selection of restaurants, food shops, craft shops, an art gallery and of course many friendly pubs in which to enjoy a drink, meet the locals or take in a night of traditional music. Garnish Island, famed for its subtropical gardens is only a short ferry ride from the village but with its tree ferns and giant eucalyptus can feel like a different continent.

Activities: Several golf courses are nearby and there is a wide selection of recreational activities available throughout West Cork: excellent fishing, sailing, hill walking, whale watching, surfing, canoeing, cycling and pony trekking are all easily arranged in the locality.

Why Janet Byrne chose Glengarriff

I loved this property from the time I went to view it. It is a very special house in a superb setting. There is plenty of space - an ideal house for a family gathering - for which it is used regularly. Minutes drive into the lovely village of Glengarriff and also in a central location to do any amount of touring in this beautiful part of Ireland

What makes this cottage unique

The house - although presented in old style - is superbly presented with all mod cons to include wifi / central heating. Superbly equipped kitchen to allow for large party food preparation. All the bedrooms are large - 3 have own bathroom facility. I also love the lounge - perfect to sit around the log fire and catch up with old friends.

What a wonderful location. This fairy tale cottage is set on a 2 acre island of tropical gardens amid the ancient trees of Glengarriff Woods just 1 km from the town itself. Glengariff is a year round holiday destination given it's proximity to the Atlantic and to the Gulf stream thus ensuring that rare plants flourish, frost is rare and snow almost unheard of. This is a lovely town with local shopping, restaurants, traditional bars and medical centre. Not to be missed is the wonderful 'Garnish Island' which can be reached by ferry from the Blue Pool from April to October - you can also watch the playful seals on route. The nearby Bamboo Park and Nature Reserve are also worth a visit. Do not miss the local Wednesday Farmer's Market in lovely Kenmare just 20 km away. The historic town of Bantry with its majestic Bantry House is also a 20 km drive.

There are many drives in the surrounding area with spectacular scenery to be experienced.
