We are both originally from the Seattle area and we still absolutely love it here. But sometimes you just need to get a break from the doom and gloom and get your fill of vitamin D.
Bill and Rory purchased this condo in 2004
Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding areas have long been among our favorite travel destinations. After having rented everything from villas to condominiums and even staying at some of the resorts in and around the region, we rented a unit in the Playa Esmeralda.
Almost immediately, we fell in love with its location, views, beaches, pool area, and other amenities. It was close enough to feel like we were in the city, but just far enough away to feel secluded. We knew that this the place we wanted to stay each and every time we returned, so we decided that we were in the market to purchase if the right opportunity presented itself. When unit 303 became available, it was exactly what we were after. That was the genesis of Casa Bonita.
Since our purchase, we’ve stayed in the unit frequently over the years. Every time we come back, we become more reassured that we made a great decision.
Our family has been enjoying Casa Bonita since 2004 . Our adult sons have grown up having Spring Break and Thanksgiving on the Beach. Over the years we have been fortunate to be able to share our piece of Paradise with family and friends.
What we love most about Puerto Vallarta are the locals. They are lovely people and always have a welcoming smile for new friends and old.
The best aspect of Casa Bonita is its location on a beautiful, mostly private beach and a fantastic view of the ocean. We enjoy beginning each morning with a cup of coffee, out on the balcony, watching for whales and seeing the local fisherman pulling in their nets. We usually end the day in the same place with a glass of wine, watching the sunset over the ocean and the fireworks from town. Our beach is furnished with palapas and lounge chairs. The pool area is large, also with lounge chairs and tables. The beach is white sand, accented by boulders. Snorkeling is good. The condo is only a few miles from Old Town Vallarta, is a quick taxi ride or bus ride to town, and these are both available on the main road which is a 3 minute walk from our building. Old Town is our favorite part of town and is loaded with restaurants, shopping, clubs, and beaches. The streets and architecture remain old Mexican style. Very charming!
The pluses: The condo is lovely and spacious. It does have wonderful views. It is quiet at night. The concierge is extremely helpful. The pool is a beautiful sapphire blue. The weather (end of Dec) was perfect. Fully stocked kitchen with modern appliances. Plenty of towels in both bathrooms and large beach towels provided. Showers are excellent with plenty of hot water and water pressure. Bottled water is provided in an easy to use system, and replacement water is $2.00. Cleaning is provided 2x weekly.
The negatives: While the views are beautiful, the beach is small and has many rocks. I'm an ocean person, and I want to go in the water. When I say these rocks are large and dangerous, I'm not kidding. The breakwater creates a funnel-like situation. Undertow is strong, and children cannot go in the ocean. The location is about 10 km from downtown, and taxi rides are about $8-10 each way. You really do have to shop and make your own breakfast and lunch or spend the day in town, or you will be paying endlessly for taxis. We had 5 people, and that meant two taxis or one large one, and the cost rose to $15-18. We like to sleep late in dark bedrooms. The two front bedrooms get hallway lighting until 7 a.m. Curtains are not sufficient to block the light. The master bedroom has a lace curtain, so sunrise is also wake up time. There is no place to hang wet bathing suits or towels and nothing dries within 24 hours due to humidity. You can use the downstairs laundry room for 12 pesos a dry, which is pretty cheap, but not as convenient as having a dryer in the condo. Air conditioning is powerful and loud. There are two settings: Arctic and Off.
If beach is not important to you, and you don't mind spending $26 dollars per day +++ for transportation, this would be wonderful. If you would rather not have to produce 2 meals per day, this is not the place for you.
Next time, I will be more careful about choosing a condo, looking for not just great views, but a beach I can swim at, a dryer to dry wet items, and proximity to restaurants, so I don't spend my entire vacation cobbling together meals.
Great views and good location. Comfortable condo which had a well- equipped kitchen. Grill on site was perfect for us and pool nicely heated for kids to play.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Casa Bonita. We were there with our adult children and spouses. The condo accommodated the six of us perfectly. The beach was great and the view from our condo was amazing. Everything was clean and well maintained. We'd go back again!
Thanks Bill and Rory.
I am not one to write reviews, but after our stay at "Casa Bonita" I felt compelled.
This was a last minute trip to escape the incredibly wet and grey winter we have been experiencing in Seattle this year, also to join some friends that were continuing on to Costa Rica. I won't repeat all you might read in the other reviews, because they are all true, although the cleanliness of the condo and the grounds are truly exceptional.
'We have traveled to P.V. many times in the past, so we really didn't feel the need to "see" or do anything. Of course we ventured into town a few nights for great dinners (10 min cab or bus stop 40 yards away) but most time spent by the very private pool and beach laughing with friends.
It was absolutely perfect, and we plan to head down next year with friends and pick up were we left off, oh yeah, a must, BBQ down by the pool 15 feet from the crashing surf!

Last minute trip with family and found Casa Bonita on Vrbo. Loved the spacious condo and all its amenities. We were totally comfortable, there was 5 of us. The pool and beach views were awesome. Very relaxing. Very clean too
A little about us . We are a family of four. Parents are 50+ with our sons 21 & 17. Youngest son brought a friend who is 16. My wife has worked for United Airlines for 25 years so we have done are share of traveling.
First things first, the owners were awesome to deal with ( we travelled last minute ), great communication, condo & area tips. Condo itself was clean & bright, had a/c , hot water , and good water pressure. Great views from master, living room and deck. A 3 bedroom fit the bill perfect - lots of room. Kitchen was fully equipped and functional , we did not use. Not sure if TV had very much English , but was only turned on a couple times. We did use community grill by the pool and it worked great. All condo staff was polite and helpful as were Bill & Rory's contacts and house keeper. Read the guestbook and stack of business cards to get recommendations also.
The pool and beach were very nice and scenic. We did take the bus everyday into town ( Malecon Boardwalk) , the beach in Playa Mismoloya or bus to Boca then water taxi to Las Animas. Both beaches were nice with restaurants, jet skis, and other activities. Dinners in town were nice but a little pricey. Joe Jacks In town ), Langostino's ( on beach) , Pinnochio's ( Italian on beach)I much preferred the taco / tamale stands or local restaurants and bakeries. Tony's Hideway in Mismoloya was really good food.
This was a very relaxing trip for us. We generally stay at resorts with a lot of hustle and bustle but this was a nice change of pace. My wife definitely liked the relaxed atmosphere. You could take a dip in the pool , wade in the ocean and feel like no one else around. If you wanted more just take the 8 peso per person bus into town or Mismoloya.
All in all a great time and highly recommend Casa Bonita. Great owners & staff. Great amenities and short bus rid to plenty of action.
