About The Owner

Sheila and Bob K love the compound lifestyle with their home and art gallery located within steps of one only by a small car park and walkway. For the past thirty years the Couple has lived, raised four kids, and totally enjoyed the eclectic nature of the architecture, the privacy afforded by the private drive, gated entrances, and large parking area. Most recently, however, the ten room "Pittsburgh House" has acted as an accidental guest house since the couples' 2015 retirement from their marketing communications firm which was located in downtown Pittsburgh. And, as fate would have it, the Kellers decided to downsize their lives and at the same time purchased a century old Frank Lloyd Wright inspired farmhouse and vineyard in Chautauqua County, New York.

Now, with too many have too many bedrooms, Bob & Sheila decided to set-up a small loft apartment within the confines of the adjoining "Eclectic Art & Objects Gallery" and move out of the "Big House" and instead, share this charming house with visitors who are interested in a comfortable, convenient, and affordable extended stay home experience in Pittsburgh.

We welcome you to Pittsburgh and hope that you will choose to stay at "The Pittsburgh House" the next time you visit Pittsburgh! "The Pittsburgh House" is an Experience...Not a Hotel"

The Owner purchased this house in 1980

Why The Owner chose Pittsburgh

Since I am a retired owner of an advertising/marketing firm in Pittsburgh, Sheila and I were focused on transitioning to a more sedentary lifestyle i.e. vineyard in Western NY, Art Gallery, Host of a world class extended stay residence etc. This is our American Dream!

What makes this house unique

Our private compound is not too close to the hustle and bustle of large Pittsburgh urban the privacy of the compound's gated green space full of trees, shrubs, and hedges, yet situated on Ohio River Boulevard, a major artery to downtown Pittsburgh...It is the best of both the urban and rural lifestyles.

The Pittsburgh House is a destination within your destination. Many of our guests begin and/or end their days relaxing in one of the comfortable bedroom suites reading, listening to music, or watching television or a favorite movie. Others enjoy socializing in the various gathering spaces in the Pittsburgh House, lounging in the sitting room, sipping wine on the terrace or enjoying the comfortable seating in the wine bar. Cooking in the well appointed kitchen and grilling out on the terrace are also favorite pastimes for hungry guests. We even have inquiries about cooking Holiday meals during their stays. But, in the end, many guests admit that it is hard to leave The Pittsburgh House once you settle-in...

Personality, lively, great hosts

  • 5 of 5

We had a 5 night stay with 7 people, the house was wonderful - lot of character, lots of flexibility for folks to hang out. It was a 20 minute or so drive to Phipps, and the Strip from the house, and we made some good scores at the Red, White & Blue thrift shop down the street (cash only). We enjoyed the back patio with the pond feature, cooked on the gas/charcoal, and had plenty of room for our group to have dinner out there.

Unique original art everywhere you look. The fully functional kitchen has everything, though it can get crowded. The upstairs loft is generous and private, with a couch and desk. Parking was off street and ample. Our only regret was that we didn't have enough time to hang out with hosts. We had a few suggestions to the hosts after our stay, and they have already making those improvements.

A couple tips for travelers - the road noise can be a little intrusive. We unscrewed the light bulbs over the bed in the loft to be able to run the ceiling fan at night (a pedestal fan was provided too). Pay attention to the driving directions that the hosts provide, the parking entry is off a side street & Google won't know how to get there from here.

Owner's Response: James Thank you for awarding The Pittsburgh House with the coveted Five Star Review! Unfortunately, I did not have an opportunity to meet James in person... It is our policy to give our guests their privacy even when the temptation is great to knock on their door to visit...With that said, I would like to address several of James' very helpful observations and tips... First, we will in the future, add ceiling fan operations to our visitor guide noting that there are two separate controls on the fan and therefore, next time you stay in the private loft king suite you will not have to unscrew the light bulb to operate the ceiling fan...Thank you also for the comment concerning traffic noise which is actually a wonderful plug for The Pittsburgh House's excellent location on Ohio River Boulevard with amazing door to door access to the stadiums, Warhol museum, National Aviary, Pittsburgh Science Center and Planetarium,Rivers Casino, Sewickley Village, and an amazing gateway to all of downtown Pittsburgh's major attractions and venues. You asked for a larger dining table to accommodate your family and Sheila and I went out the next day and purchased a seven foot dining table and chairs...You asked for fluffier pillows and we responded with a total upgrade to our pillows including zippered pillow liners that provide a double layer of comfort between the guest and the pillow. and before I forget, we anticipated the possibility of ambient street noise and installed triple pane soundproof glass in every window in the house...sweet dreams...And although I didn't have a chance to meet James in person, Sheila and I had a great talk with other members of your family who are spirited and obviously experienced travelers. With that said, your family left the home in immaculate shape! Dave even called on his drive home to alert us that he inadvertently failed to press the start button on the dishwasher. It doesn't get better than that...In Fact, I deservingly also rewarded James with a Five Star Review as a coveted excellent guest and in fact, I would recommend this family to every rental property owner, but I won't because I want them to always choose the Pittsburgh House as their only Pittsburgh destination...Thank you James for the wonderful care and respect that you and your family demonstrated on your stay.. Thank You! Always Our Best Bob & Sheila

We hope to go back next year!

  • 5 of 5

The house is lovely and perfect for our family get together. We were close to our destination and other points of interest, i.e. downtown Pittsburgh. The patio area is great and we were able to make use of the grill for a nice meal outdoors. The beds were comfortable and we all slept well every night. There were plenty of suggestions for food delivery and the house was well stocked with anything we needed. We had a grand time and the added bonus was the beautiful art on the walls and the stunning decor.

Guys weekend

  • 5 of 5

I enjoyed the house and the backyard with grill. The rooms were quaint but well maintained and stocked. We were 5 guys and everyone enjoyed the art style. The only drawback was the traffic that is loud from Ohio River Blvd. other than that it was a great stay!

Owner's Response: Bhagat Thank you for the excellent five star review, We are pleased that you and your group enjoyed your stay at the Pittsburgh House. With that said, I would like to explain, and perhaps apologize, for not emphasizing strongly enough the importance of pre-planning the specifics of your sleeping arrangements i.e. There may be privacy issues, for bedroom and/or bathroom sharing requirements and accommodations for babies, kids, couples, families, singles, etc. In your case, five single men sharing four bedrooms without pre-assignment of sleeping accommodations led to the necessity to use an auxiliary (Quaint) bedroom (Sun-room) with a convertible sofa vs premium accommodations with the other four single guests. In the future, we will ask guests to specify their special sleeping accommodation requirements when booking. This will take the guesswork out of who sleeps where and ultimately avoid unnecessary impositions on guests. (I.E. Your group could have pre-planned to comfortably sleep in four bedroom suites by splitting one of the king beds into two singles with room dividers. Also all premium bedroom suites are located on the second floor and loft of the house where ambient outside noise is not an issue. We welcome you and your friends to stay at The Pittsburgh House again in the future...and we hope that this simple booking tip will help to assure that your next visit will be even more satisfying and memorable! Always Our Best Bob & Sheila

Beautiful home in a charming neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

Bob and Sheila have created an oasis in the city. The house is spacious, beautifully decorated and has everything you could need, they thought of everything!

We loved Sutton in the patio mat night with a glass of wine and in the morning with our coffee. It was perfect for our group of 7.

We’ll be back!

Owner's Response: Susan, you and your family are always welcome to stay at "The Pittsburgh House" when you are in Pittsburgh...Sheila and I have only been sharing "The Pittsburgh House" for two months, and in that short period of time have been so fortunate to have attracted such wonderful visitors including their friends, and families. Our owner experience has been both satisfying and encouraging, as we continue our journey, with HomeAway and VRBO who have been wonderful and responsible partners. As our signature implies, Sheila and I will continue to Always Give Our Best to those who trust us with the memories of their visit to Pittsburgh... Always Our Best! Bob & Sheila

Vegan Wedding Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful home, look no further! We were looking for a comfortable home to accommodate family and friends for a very special wedding that I was cooking for. The Pittsburg Home fit the bill perfectly. The well-appointed kitchen was stocked with fresh herbs (that were cut and in water before we arrived), spices, snacks, bottled water, condiments, and coffee, it felt like home. The kitchen is equipped with plenty of cookware, dishes, and utensils. The back beautiful patio, grill, and pond were an added bonus. The house is clean, well appointed, and filled with beautiful art. Bob and Sheila were invaluable before our visit. They familiarized us with the area, shopping, and our last minute needs for our additional wedding guest. The adjacent street to the house is busy but didn't bother ourselves or guest. We have rented multiple vacation homes, the Pittsburg House is at the top of our list. The location, cleanliness, homey accommodations, and phenomenal hosts make this home a MUST! Thank you, Bob and Sheila, for making a hectic wedding weekend a little less stressful. Molly thanks you too!

Owner's Response: Karen You and your family are always welcome at "The Pittsburgh House"... We realize that most visitors don't need extra stress associated with their lodging during their stay in Pittsburgh ...You mitigated any possibility of "The Pittsburgh House" being the weak link during your Pittsburgh stay through your concise and thorough communication before, during, and even after your visit that made the difference....You were facing: A Wedding... one of the most important events in our lives (stress)...Personal responsibility to prepare the perfect Vegan wedding meal (Stress)...Coordination of Flower delivery to The Pittsburgh House" before your check-in (Stress)...Molly package mid-day delivery during your stay (Stress)...Upgrading rental agreement to accommodate last minute housing for surprise international house guests (stress)...Countless other unknown and unforeseen obstacles (Stress)... Our Property Manager (Nicole) does an excellent job assuring that The Pittsburgh House) is Clean, Safe, and Stocked with ample supplies of the basics in the kitchen, coffee station, and bathrooms, and assures that all linens, bath towels, blankets, pillow cases and sheets are clean and fresh. But, she and we cannot anticipate your special needs and preferences without the kind of communication that you exemplified throughout your Pittsburgh stay. Sheila and I thank you for the glowing review but, we must share the positive outcome with you.. Nicole thanks you as well! Always Our Best Bob & Sheila
