Restored Casa with large garden and private pool in hilltop borgo.

Bedrooms 2
Space 914 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

2 double bedroms, both ensuite, large open dining/living area. Private terrace

Casa D'alloro has two beautifully appointed double bedrooms, both en-suite. One has an outstanding view over the chestnut swathed foothills of the Apuan Alps. A fully equipped kitchen includes dishwasher and microwave, while the lounge area also has those spectacular views down the valley towards the Magra river.

Breakfast on the terrace in the cool shade watching the butterflies and listening to the crickets. Evening in the warm sun watching the shadows lengthen. Then the fire flies appear below in the garden flitting from the bushes to the fruit trees. As it gets darker the sky lights up with a million stars so bright without florescent lights and you can hear the owls over the valley and even the rustling in the bushes of the wild deer or maybe even the chingale wild boar so prized by the locals. Far away towards Aulla just a few lights twinkle in tiny villages like ours and above Licciana is the faint orange glow of the cemetery...... this is Lunigiana........

Outdoor Pool - our new in ground pool( 8m x 4m) has just been completed. Roman steps lead into the pool to give easy access for all ages. The pool is 1.25m deep..perfect for adults to do easy lengths and shallow enough for kids 7 and over to be able to stop for a breather. The location is amazing with views far down over the valley.

Local attractions 1: Lucca - 1 hr 10 mins - Provincial capital with intact Renaissance walls. Do not miss the oval Piazza Antiteatro right in the centre which has some of the original arches still in place. This is the birthplace of Giacomo Puccici the famous composer and there is a summer music festival held which has included Eric Clapton, Burt Bacharach, Anastasia and Moby. At nearby Torre del Lago there is a Puccini festival every July/ August.

Potovenere/Cinque Terra - 55 mins - World Heritage Site. Picturesque town on the Gulf of Poets with great seafood trattorias where you can catch the ferry to the 5 villages of the Cinque Terra. Over the centuries terraces have been constructed on the steep hillsides to cultivate vines and olives. No cars can reach the villages and the inhabitants are proud of protecting their way of life.

Eating out - possibly our favourite activity... huge choice from 12 euro local lunches of fresh mountain produce to the more expensive but superb restaurants around Lerici.

Local attractions 2: Lerici/San Terenzo - 35 mins - beautiful typical seaside resort that hasn't changed much over the years due to strict planning regulations. Dominated by its castle, it also has a small fish market right on the harbour. There is a small public beach that is shallow and safe for kids. Great ice cream parlours and restaurants. You can also get the ferry to Portovenere across the bay.

Sarzana - 30 mins - beautiful centro storico with large piazza and marble Gothic cathedral dating from 1355. Some lovely restaurants and ice cream parlours. Huge antiques market every month.

Parma - 1 hr 30 mins - world famous for Proscuitto di Parma, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, architecture and one of the oldest universities in the world. Easy to visit and to park in and amazing food. Many beautiful Romanesque churches and lovely gardens around the Ducal Palace.

Luni Amphitheater and Museum - 40 mins -Founded in 177BC there are remains of the Roman Amphitheater and is located on the via Aurelia which lead to Rome.

for more info please see casadalloro and baccana on facebook

more info.....: Hill walking - directly from Casa D'alloro there are endless spectacular marked hill walks in the Apuan Alps. Wild boar roam the mountains and all the locals search for fungi the day after rain.

Water Parks -There are two water parks within easy reach, one at Villafranca in Lunigiana and one close to Fivizziano.

Karting - there is an outdoor kart track between Lerici and Boco di Magra and a world championship track at Parma just 1 hour drive.

Opera - just one hour from Torre di Lago to experience Puccini where it was written. Book early in the season to ensure you get a seat.

Shopping - Forti dei Marmi is just down the autostrada where you can enjoy the passegata with the locals browsing Tods, Prada, Hogan, Dolce e Gabbana before stopping for your has to be a Prosecco......

Adventure park - parco 100 aventure is the summer activity at the Prato Spilla ski resort. A challenging adventure set high in the chestnut trees caters for 6 to 76 year olds.....

Why Mark Carson chose Province of Massa and Carrara

Unspoiled hilltop village in Tuscany ... Why wouldn't you want to be part of it... Southern Tuscany (chiantiashire) is very different and this was the ideal opportunity to buy a property in real Italy and live with the locals.

What makes this house unique

Expirence the real Italy and the real Italian food and living in the countryside alongside the locals. Great value food and wine. Close enough to visit Lucca, the Riveria, Cinque Terre without paying the high prices.

The local hand crafted kitchen has everything you need if you enjoy cooking (as we do) but also if you have kids and need a microwave and dishwasher (i really don't want to wash up on holiday !) . The lounge has those same views with a comfortable sofa bed and Sony HD TV with DVD player. This whole space has the original stone cleaned and re pointed up to shoulder height and the beautiful arched roof plastered in the traditional way. You exit the house onto the terrace through either the front bedroom or the living area. Here there is enough space to sit and enjoy breakfast taking in the tranquillity of the large garden area with endless chestnut covered hills across the valley.

A real Italian Holiday

  • 4 of 5

On arrival after a long day of travelling we arrived at Casa Dollora, we were initially a little nervous as we took the remote windy road up to the very little village, that looked a little tired and need of love on first sight, then a friendly neighbour then showed us through the cobbled pathways to the Casa. and we loved what we found, a slice of authentic Italy restored beautifully, the village the next day with fresh not tired eyes was seen in a different light, a real treat a real find beautiful, nothing like the tourist traps of the coastal area. The facilities were clean and tidy and information inside all relevant. The views are wonderful from the balcony, the facilities in the Casa are much more than ample, books, DVDs, pool gear, kitchen etc.., the pool area perfect for our family time we desired and BBQ area (on logs provided by the neighbour) perfect, The house was self cooling in the hot weather that we encountered so great when needed to cool down. The village is surrounding by other hillside villages all seem to offer a little local restaurant or something , that all seemed full to the brim of locals. We loved visiting these, a real highlight trying to order without a menu and limited Italian skills.. The house is about 40-50 mins drive from Le spezia and lerici, but we were happy to drive this distance to the peace and quiet of the area, local shops for food in Aulla about 20 mins away. We did no walking but I imagine this would be the ideal location. The communication with the owner was first class, he really cares. We had a good time here.

Run for the hills

  • 5 of 5

Having had family in the manicured, coffee-table landscape of Chianti, we thought we knew what to expect here. Not a bit of it. These northern reaches of Tuscany are wild, mountainous, jaw dropping and majestic, and Casa D’Allora is a wonderful way to experience them.

The house itself sits in the largely deserted old hamlet of Baccana, which you share with maybe three other homes that are actually occupied, various cats seeking the shade of your car, and an elderly mutt. But it’s not overly remote either; you are just a short drive from the neighbouring villages, where we found everyone without exception – the butcher, the greengrocer, the village bartender – exceptionally warm. The local restaurants are equally welcoming, where workers in overalls eat alongside coiffed retirees. We never saw a menu; each day they explain (with ingenious sign language) their daily specials of hearty, unpretentious rural food. And it’s not at all expensive.

The villa itself has a cave-like cosiness to it yet sits amidst a vast sweep of hillside forest. The pool is fabulous and inside you’ll find all the digital creature comforts you might want. In fact, it’s bizarre that in such a rustic location, the Wi-Fi (satellite perhaps?) is as good as any you’ll find in a city.

It’s the kind of place to descend on with a pile of books and a case of wine, and marvel at the deafening tranquillity. Huge thanks to Willa, and the wonderful Antonella who insisted on booking tables for us and even sending us home with some sublime pesto she’d made. We couldn’t recommend it more.

Fantastic location, lovely pool, comfortable beds

  • 4 of 5

Casa dalloro is in a tiny hamlet. You are up on the hill surrounded by forest. Small villages for basic provisions are a few minutes away and a large town is 20 minutes. You wouldn't know it. It feels like you are in the middle of nowhere.

Casa dalloro is a lovely two bedroom property great for two couples or a family of four. With nice bedrooms both ensuite. The kitchen is simple but has everything you need.

There is a folder with comprehensive information about the area for provisions, day trips to the coast and much else besides.

The pool is wonderful.

I'd really recommend Casa dalloro, great property, great location and lovely, friendly service from the owner and his local contacts.

Lovely villa in a rustic village with amazing views!

  • 4 of 5

Upon arriving in Baccana myself and my partner were blown away by the beauty of the place, the views are stunning and the little village is very rustic and charming, the photos do not do it justice. The villa itself is lovely with ample space and everything you need for a relaxing holiday in the mountains. It does however get rather warm over night with no air conditioning and I imagine it is much hotter in the middle of summer but the back bedroom is much cooler than the front. The welcoming food hamper was also very gratefully received after a long journey from the UK. The pool is very welcoming and perfect for cooling down in on a hot day and it looks lovely when lit up at night, the garden is pretty large but does look a little incomplete and could do with a bit of attention/tidying up, possibly with the addition of paving around the pool. The area is very quiet and the perfect place to escape for a week or two, there is a lot of wildlife around including tawny owls, butterflies, dragonflies and lots of crickets and cicadas which create the lovely ambient hum come sunset. There are several stray cats in the village and although I am a cat lover they did become a bit of a nuisance, trying to get into the house and begging for food. The villa is pretty much in the middle of nowhere up a very bumpy and windy road in the car so be prepared to travel for any sightseeing etc. There are several little local villages with a couple of restaurants, unfortunately we didn't get to visit as many of them as we wanted but Beatrice's Pizzeria and Montagna Verde are a must. It's also worth visiting the beautiful Cinque Terre villages, we drove to La Spezia station and got the day train ticket to visit all 5 villages which worked out very well, you can also get the ferry but this is a lot pricier and you get less time in each village. Overall we loved our stay in Baccana, we were very sad to leave and we will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review....we are waiting on quotes for paving around the pool .... after the pool was intsalled the soil level dropped a few times as is normal so now its settled is the time to sort the surround. Cats can occasionally come onto the terrace but by not encouraging them with food they generally don't cause us any trouble...we do ask in our arrival instructions that you do not feed or encourage cats or the village dog Pappi to come up to the terrace area... In summer best to keep curtains pulled during the day to keep interior of house cooler and open up all the doors once it cools in the evening to get air flowing through the house..this keeps the whole house at a nice temperature without the need for air con......

Welcome to Casa D'alloro and find out why George Clooney has swapped a villa on Lake Como for a country retreat in Lunigiana.... Set deep in the ancient territory of Lunigiana it is Tuscany before the huge influx of tourists. Restaruants are superb serving local produce from the mountains and the nearby Mediterranean sea at very reasonable prices. Beaches are shallow and safe, perfect for kids. You can take the ferry to the UNESCO coast of the Cinque Terra or take to the mountains for summer hiking, autumn mushroom hunting and winter skiing. The beautiful cities of Lucca, Parma and Florence are an easy drive or train journey or you can soak up the style of Portofino and shop in the designer boutiques of Forti Dei Marmi.

Casa D'alloro has two beautifully appointed double bedrooms, both en-suite. One has an outstanding view over the chestnut swaithed foothills of the Apuan Alps. A fully equipped kitchen includes dishwasher and microwave, while the lounge area also has those spectacular views over the private pool and down the valley towards the Magra river.

Other Activities: skiing just 27km from house. porcini mushrooms in local woods with licence

Ski: Cerreto Laghi - is the major ski resort of the region with 28 km of challenging slopes, a snow park, ski school with travelator and snow making facilities. Piste 2 has FIS approval and hosts slalom races during the season. The instructors say that if you can ski Monte Nuda you are then able to ski anywhere in the Alps.... There is also a cross-country course and an Olympic size ice rink. Around the lake are great value hotels and restaurants, ski hire shops and delicatessens selling local and regional produce and there are some exclusive ski wear and clothes shops specializing in Moncler, Timberland and Geox. There are rarely long queues for the modern lift system, every one is very friendly and the instructors at the ski school are superb and really great value. (28 euro for private 1 on 1 lesson).

Prato Spilla is closer though is a much smaller resort with around 12km of runs which are less challenging than Cerreto but equally great value and very friendly. 15 euro day pass .
