About the property

Navona Campo Fiori Wonderful 4 BR, 3 BA, Panoramic Terrace Views, History Palace

This marvellous panoramic and terraced apartment, called 'The Turtles' Dream', comprises four bedrooms, three bathrooms, an amazing sitting room, a most ample dining room / kitchen, a very ample terrace / roof garden with panoramic views of Rome's sights, a second terrace to relax, and it is located in an authentic historical noble palace, in the heart of old Rome.

It is located between the Campo de' Fiori and the Jewish quarters, near Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Roman Forum. The palace is situated in Piazza Mattei, where you find the famous Turtle Fountain, which can be seen from all its windows. It is one of Rome's most world-acclaimed, and most charming, visited at all times year-round. You find four copies of it only in the US.

The apartment is situated at the highest floor (with elevator), in the famous palace 'Palazzo Costaguti', which you can find illustrated in all history / architecture books and websites about Rome. This high vantage point makes the property bright, and it enables excellent views from its stunning panoramic terrace and also from its windows.

The terrace, which is actually a roof garden, is 80 Sq. Mt. large (app. 820 Sq. Ft.), it is endowed with a charming table with chairs, an ample and most elegant sitting area in 'rattan' (sofa, armchairs, table), deck chairs and an ample parasol. From it you can have your meals 'al fresco', or sip a glass of wine, while enjoying spectacular view of Rome's sights, domes and of old roofs.

The apartment is 210 Sq. Mt. (app. 2,250 Sq. Ft.) large. It is situated at the 3rd European floor (of an old-fashioned palace, consequently it is equal to a 4th European floor and to a 5th American floor). As mentioned it is endowed with *elevator*. The apartment was just perfectly renovated. Each room is wonderful in its own right, for its beautiful tiles, décor, furniture, paintings of old masters. The property is silent, inviting and bright. There is also a charming second terrace with table, perfect for a glass of wine, hobnobbing, or to relax or write emails.

The sitting room is astonishing. It still preserves the original Renaissance (16th century) coffered wooden ceilings, and each of the 168 'lacunars' or coffered frames has a painting of a different species of bird. Throughout all the walls you find also finest frescoes of peacocks, spaced out with the intriguing coat of arms of the patrician family. The floors are also spectacular. They are made with original 'graniglia' tiles with beautiful design, different every room.

All four double bedrooms (two matrimonial and two twin beds) have a peculiar charm, and from them you enjoy a direct view of the famous fountain in the square below (you can also hear its water gushing if you open the windows).

The dining room is very spacious, and together with the large kitchen it forms one large open-plan space of nearly 36 Sq. Mt. (370 Sq. Ft.).

The property is equipped with all mod cons to ensure a most pleasant stay: air conditioning in all rooms, heating, internet Wi-Fi, complete kitchen equipment incl. American coffee percolator, Italian coffee pots, microwave, dishwasher, iron, iron board, fridge, freezer, toaster, orange squeezer, washing machine, clothes dryer, electronic scales.

Also the owners, descendants of the same noble family owning the palace since 1578, will welcome you. They are most hospitable and kindest persons, who will share with you the history of the palace and of the family.

Enjoy the detailed property presentation, with PHOTOS, MAPS, ILLUSTRATIONS!

You will find more photos (120!) and detailed description (20 pages!) of this wonderful property, together with the floor plan, map, and panoramic photos in our website.

We provide a property book, regularly updated. It is given to every guest. It is divided in two sections. In the first part you find plentiful and detailed instructions, with many photos, about all aspects of the palace and of the apartment, on how all the appliances work etc. In the second part you find countless tips and suggestions about grocers, supermarkets, shops, cafes, and special places of the area, together with information on transport, sights etc. of the area but also of Rome.

We send the book before their arrival to guests (via a PDF file) , so they can begin studying it, especially the detailed tourist tips, enabling to plan ahead daily activities.

The assistant checking you will be proficient about Rome, Italy, both regarding their culture, history, but also about detailed travel and tourist information.

In high season, if you pay the high season weekly price, upon check-in as a hospitality gesture you will find a bottle of finest Italian wines, mineral water, cereals, fruit, cheese, coffee, milk, tea, biscuits, olive oil, vinegar etc. Practically the kitchen and the fridge will be stored with food.

We also supply special and unobtainable cards through which you can obtain a 10% discount in restaurants of the area.

During the Christmas and New Year holidays we provide a complimentary Christmas tree with lights, an Italian Christmas cake called "Panettone" or "Pandoro", and an Italian bottle of fine champagne for the holidays (called "Spumante").

We anticipate the pleasure of hosting you, and to make your experience of Rome truly memorable!

About Morris

[In the photo: owner Dr. Costaguti and his wife].

Our family purchased this famous historical palace during the Renaissance (1578), and we own it to this day, generation after generation.

Ours is one of the oldest recorded Italian families; the cardinals and a saint in our family contributed to the construction of St. Peter's Basilica. In a totally different world, today we are solar energy entrepreneurs. Nevertheless, we always dedicated ourselves to the community, and we consider hospitality and culture as a mission. We improved the palace, its courts, its décor and all its units throughout the centuries.

We would like you to experience Rome's essence, combining its immense historical and cultural heritage with leisure, yet off the beaten track of stereotypical commercial offers.

We are confident that through our hospitality you will experience Rome's legacy and its charm, combined with memorable leisure.

We look forward to hosting you!

From Dr. Afan De Rivera Costaguti and wife (owners, in the picture).

Oasis of Calm and Refinement

  • 5 of 5

The apartment and the location are wonderful. Generous space and a gracious feeling to the residence and the historic 1578 building. The owners are very hospitable, and the property manager is full of information about the apartment, the appliances, the neighborhood, and Roman history. Our family really enjoyed hanging out in the open light-filled kitchen/dining room. The forno around the corner and the Campo di Fiori (five minutes further on foot) provided for sumptuous breakfasts of freshly baked breads (pizza bianca was a favorite), fabulous fragolini (wild baby strawberries), melon, oranges and the like better than any purveyors in New York. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms lovely and up-to-date. As Americans, there was a bit of a learning curve to master the showers and not to get the marble terazzo floors wet. Would recommend bringing slippers to wear inside on the cold marble floors, as well some cozy clothing. Did I mention the roof-top terrace yet? Wonderful views and amazing late afternoon light. A perfect spot for cocktails and cheese and crackers. The location of Turtle Dreams is another plus. We walked everywhere. With thanks and appreciation to Dr. Mauro (Morris) and the Costaguti family !

Our ideal home in Rome.

  • 5 of 5

We live part of the year in Rome, and we love to invite guests from home (US) as our apartment in Rome is a tad small. This beautiful apartment, the Turtles Dream, was perfect in all respects. It is large, with excellent layout, well furnished, equipped, with finest fittings and decor. The ceilings are high, and the rooms airy. It is also a very peaceful and quiet abode in Rome's frenzy center. The terrace is large, serviced, exclusive, and we loved to hobnob especially in the evenings. The views are terrific, you can single out many of Rome's sights and domes. The palace exudes history and character, like we hardly have experienced in all of Italy. The location was to die for, it was a great surprise, much better, with more animation and character than others we knew in Rome's centre. It's like a little village, nestled in Rome's centre, with all kinds of facilities, restaurants and cafes. We are planning to find a long term in the area, after having discovered it. As for our hosts, Dr. Morris and his team, let alone kind Dr. Costaguti, have all been helpful at all times. Morris also organized our car services and an excursion, which was the highlight of our stay. We recommend this property highly, and will return.

Spectacular Easter Holiday in Rome

  • 5 of 5

In organizing a family reunion in Rome for Easter, we considered ourselves very fortunate to have been able to find several apartments in Palazzo Costaguti. My family and I stayed in the penthouse apartment known as the "Turtles Dream"

The proper manager Dr. Morris Abate took care of everything for us and paid attention to every detail. He organized our airport transfers (which I highly recommend) which got us to our apartment door in less than an hour during the morning rush hour. The Palazzo is in Piazza Mattei which is adjacent to the Jewish Quarter with its characteristic restaurants and shops. It's two streets from the Tiber River (great for a morning jog) and a ten minute walk from the Pantheon or Piazza Navona. In addition to the famous Turtle Fountain, the Piazza has several coffee bar/restaurants and is full of activity during the day and evening, but quiet at night. Dr. Abate was also able to recommend a gym nearby where my wife could get her daily workouts in. There is also a large supermarket a 5 minute walk away for food shopping.

The apartment itself is stunning! In contrast to so many apartments in the historic center which are located on narrow streets with diminished access to daylight, this apartment is flooded with sunlight. The ceilings are very high, the windows are tall and the marble floors are spotless. All the rooms have windows facing the Piazza. The large kitchen has a central island with 4 chairs and is well-equipped and up-to-date; it is very inviting and comfortable. There is a dining table in the kitchen which seats 8 guests. Dr. Abate was also able to provide us with a private chef one evening who after reviewing the menu with us, prepared a wonderful, seasonal Roman dinner for twelve guests.

The bedrooms are large, quiet and the beds are comfortable. Two of the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms. Another highlight of the apartment though is the private roof-top patio. Perfect for pre-dinner cocktails or star-gazing at night over the roof-tops of Rome, a visit up there was part of our daily routine. This is a unique feature which is not commonly found in an apartment rental which we really enjoyed.

You can't go wrong with this apartment; it's everything it says it is and the pictures on-line are very accurate. We had a wonderful time here and hope to return. Thank you again Dr. Abate and the Costaguti family for making our Easter 2018 so memorable!

Spacious but noisy

  • 4 of 5

I had been struck by the all 5 reviews that this property received so perhaps my expectations were too high. There were many fine details to the apartment and it is great for multiple families.

I had thought the higher floor would insulate sound better but the piazza is quite noisy very late -- past midnight on weekdays. And the noise in the building (construction, foot traffic) started by 8AM. This was a real kink in the stay. People should consider it.

The area is pretty and convenient and the layout and amenities of the property are charming. Kitchen/dining room in particular were well stocked and warm/inviting.

Owner's Response: Dear Mr. Robert, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Thank you also for appreciating the many features of this great apartment, situated in a famous old Rome historical palace. Allow us though to pour a grain of objectiveness on your remark about the noise. We acknowledge that there was some noise during your stay, yet it was caused by sudden temporary renovation works that occurred in the apartment below ours, of which we were not notified. Once we found out about them, we contacted the owner, and he reassured us that the works were carried out only between Mon-Fri and only from 8:30 am til 4 pm, i.e. during the time in which usually our guests are outdoors sightseeing. As mentioned, the works occurred in the apartment below, because there are no properties above ours, the Turtles Dream, so fortunately the noise wasn't loud. The works are also temporary, they will end in a few weeks: in the town with the greatest architecture historical legacy in the world, some works are exceptionally necessary, in order to make its visitors find the Eternal City in good shape. As for the square with the Turtle Fountain, and the location, please appreciate that they are universally renowned for being among the quietest and most charming of Old Rome, off the usual routes of the millions visiting Rome, making it a noisy town since ancient times (even Julius Caesar complained about it). Our property is loved by our guests especially for its quiet, as you can read in all previous reviews. One in particular, describes our property as "Oasis of calm and refinement". Many of our guests in summer leave the windows open to make the gentle Turtle Fountain water splashes become their lullaby. We truly enjoyed hosting you, and we would love to host you again, though we suggest that perhaps on your next Rome vacation you might consider staying in a more peripheral / rural setting near Rome. Kindest regards by Dr. Costaguti, Dr. Morris, Clara and all the staff.

Excellent property and service. Will return.

  • 5 of 5

Third time in Rome, by far this was the best accomodation. The property is as advertized and as the reviews report. We loved everything: the spacious unit, the décor, the terrific terrace Rome views while sipping a glass of wine in the evening, our morning stroll in the Ghetto and along the Tiber banks with the first cappuccino and "cornetto" (a morning dough). The historical palace has great character. Yet the best value comes from the charm and hospitality of the staff and of the owner. Dr. Morris guided us through the process from A to Z, and made us always feel at ease. Owner Dr. Costaguti is charming and helpful, a real gentleman. We are reommending this property, which they call "The Turtles Dream", to family and friends, and we plan to return.

Just Perfect

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is amazing. It was the first time I rented a flat where the reality was better than the pictures. The location is unbelievable, the unit is elegant and confortable. The building is an historical dream. The staff could not have been nicer. We coordinated our stay via email with Morris, who was super helpful. We were greeted by Clara, who was truly a delight. If you are going to Rome with a group, this is the place to stay.

This wonderful apartment is located in the heart of Rome, between the Campo de' Fiori and the Jewish Ghetto, and near Piazza Navona. It is situated in the famous historical and noble palace called Palazzo Costaguti, which faces the square called Piazza Mattei, from the name of the opposite aristocratic palace, Palazzo Mattei. The square is famous for its world-acclaimed, wonderful Fontana delle Tartarughe, or Turtles Fountains (1580), considered by most Romans and critics Rome's most beautiful.

The apartment is situated at the higher floor or 'piano nobile' of the fabulous noble 'Palazzo Costaguti' palace, one of Rome's most famous, and it is owned to this day by the aristocratic family. It is a truly a wonderful and most elegant property.

Both the apartment and the noble owner (descendant of a family counting kings, viceroys, saints and cardinals) are very inviting and will make you feel instantly at home - the one you always dreamed of, with the kindest landlord.

Nearby you also find all Rome's sights, churches, monuments, squares, palazzi, fountains, places of interest, historical landmarks, parks, museums, academies, and let's not forget the numberless restaurants, cafes, bars, shops (including those of artisans), artists' clubs, cinemas, and theatres. All these sights and places can be easily reached on foot, and if you don't feel like it, there is a taxi stand nearby, and public transport is efficient, fast and well organized.

In addition to enabling you to see and enjoy all Rome's wonderful sights, the quarter has a very homely feel. There are scores of family-run grocery stores (each with its peculiar specialty), bakers, confectioneries ('pasticcerie'), renowned and inviting restaurants, art and book shops, artisans shops. Shop owners are very welcoming and you will feel immediately part of the local community.

The apartment is situated between three of Rome's most famous central districts, with a completely different personality: 1) Piazza Navona with its elegant square, the marvellous fountains and churches and the chic, Dolce Vita atmosphere; 2) Campo de' Fiori, Rome's liveliest area, with its morning market, its grocery shops, and its bohemian character. 3) The Jewish Ghetto, with its unique ancient charm, its millenary inhabitants and traditions, its historical shops / restaurants / and also with Jewish sights (the main synagogue, Rome's Jewish Museum etc.).

In the end, you couldn't find a more elegant, large and complete property, situated in a most authentic and historical Roman palace, in a uniquely quintessential Rome location.
