About Onaona Maly

Born and raised in Hawai'i all my life. Native Hawaiian. Family involved in historic preservation on the Island of Lāna'i and throughout Hawai'i

Onaona Maly purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Onaona Maly chose Lanai

In 1923 when James Dole initiated design and construction of Lāna‘i City as a part of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company’s Lāna‘i Plantation, several classes of residences were built. In the city two and three bedroom homes were built for families, generally on lots of about 3,000 to 4,000 square feet. Single men who worked on the plantation were provided rooms and board in boarding houses which were occurred on various blocks throughout the city. On the hill overlooking the city, the plantation manager’s house, and houses built for management staff and professionals were built. These “management” residences all had a main house, a detached garage and laundry room, and a guest house. The lots ranged in size from a quarter acre to just under one acre.

The home situated at 452 ‘Ōhi‘a Place, is one of the later management homes built on Lāna‘i, and is part of a group of 15 homes of the same design, built in 1948. The house sits on nearly one-half acre of land, which is buffered by plantings up to 30 feet high on three sides (north, east and west), and by ‘Ōhi‘a Place on the south.

The homes on the hill (formerly known as “Haole Camp”) have always hosted guests to the island. And following World War II, when a public hunting program was initiated by the Territory (later State) of Hawai‘i, families throughout Lāna‘i city hosted both personal guests and visitors during hunting seasons. The use of Lāna‘i homes as a place where visitors were welcomed, is a practice that dates back more than 60 years. While payment was not always asked, the guests always brought food and items not generally available on Lāna‘i, or paid for the boarding. Many families supplemented their income by renting rooms for short term visits.

This one-half acre property offers the comforts of a Lāna'i home. Peaceful.

What makes this cottage unique

Located on hill above Lāna'i City. Large property, peaceful and quiet. At night it's very dark, sometimes you may hear deer barking and during the day see turkeys run through the yard.

Property is located in location that was referred to in the plantation days as "Haole Camp."

A True "Home Away From Home"

  • 5 of 5

The grounds were beautiful and the cottage was perfect for my needs. I felt like a guest in a friend's home as opposed to the coldness of a hotel. The owner left warm touches inside, including a personal welcome note, drinks in the refrigerator, tea and coffee, and even various lotions and bug spray. The cottage was spotless and the towels and linens smelled fresh and clean. Additionally, the owner was extremely helpful prior to my arrival with recommendations for car rentals, activities, and general tips about the island. I would not hesitate to stay here again and highly recommend this property and this owner!

Lanai at its best

  • 4 of 5

The property is tucked away, but still close to town. The unit is in fabulous shape and met our expectations. The only thing missing is an in unit washer/dryer and the refrigerator could be bigger (but it met our needs). The owners were super easy to work with, friendly, and not at all intrusive. The cleaning deposit was promptly refunded (before I had even left the island). Can't wait to go back again!!

This property is a wonderful alternative to the expensive resort on Lanai.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying with in Lanai city, eating at the local restaurants, talking to the residents, and visiting the area shops. Visiting the local art gallery, local craft shop and cat sanctuary are must see.

The unit was very clean, well stocked and comfortable for my wife and I. Its location near the free Cavendish golf voided was also nice.

The unit is highly recommended.

A great place with a wonderful host

  • 5 of 5

From beginning to end, Onaona was an excellent, gracious host - full of aloha. Her cottage was in a great location, she provided all of the amenities you'll need and more, very clean and comfortable. The cost was reasonable for the amount of space you get. We would definitely stay there again, and highly recommend her cottage if you're ever in Lana'i. You will not regret it.

This was a wonderful property in a good location in Lanai City.

  • 5 of 5

The rental cottage was a terrific value and was a major factor in making our stay on Lanai so enjoyable. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom provided what we needed. The kitchen area worked very well for us and had adequate dishes, silverware, pots and pans. We used the microwave a lot.

We used the living room area a lot to sit and talk or read or watch some TV. It was great having a huge grassy area outside to walk around and of course it was great having the animals around.

The owners were extremely friendly and very helpful. In fact Onaona helped connect me with the person with whom we rented a vehicle and that person gave us information regarding tours on the island.

Onaona spent a long time when we first arrived orienting us to the property and the general area.

The property was very clean and well maintained.

The listing accurately described the property.

In summary we were very happy with the the property and will recommend it to anyone we meet who is planning to go to Lanai.
