The Brookcliffe Farm Guest House, sited on a wooded ridge overlooking Beaverdam Creek and the Blue Ridge Mtns., is part of a 30 acre estate located in the heart of VA Hunt Country. This secluded, 5 BR, 2 BA 3,200 sq. ft. stone and clapboard home has two large flagstone terraces (one under roof and the other pool side with a large pergola); a 20'x60' inground heated swimming pool open early May through Labor Day weekend; a new outdoor Jacuzzi 6-person hot tub; and attached garage parking for 1 vehicle (additional covered parking available). A recent renovation included an updated galley kitchen and two full bathrooms, CAC installation, custom lighting, a LR ceiling fan, refinished heart of pine hardwood floors and professionally designed/installed landscaping. There are two bedrooms upstairs in addition to a very comfortable and private sleep sofa in the sun room. Downstairs you will find two more bedrooms, one with a fireplace and sitting area. The bedrooms share access to a full bath as well as a wet bar.
Our farm is located on scenic Foxcroft Rd. bordering the Historic Beaverdam Creek District. The guest house is 5.5 miles northwest of Middleburg, 4 miles from Upperville, 50 miles west of Washington, D.C. and 30 miles east of the Blue Ridge Mtns. We're perfectly located for guests interested in a variety of activities, such as attending family weddings, touring the local vineyards, cycling, fox hunting, polo, steeplechase races (we're 5 min. from Glenwood Park), hiking the Appalachian Trail, fine dining and shopping in historic Middleburg, touring nearby Civil War battlefields and visiting the Virginia State Arboretum just 30 minutes away. The majority of our bookings have been for overflow accommodations for wedding parties. Everyone has found it extremely convenient to be able to have up to 10 family members stay together in the comfort of our home and in such close proximity to the wedding related events. We are a 10 minute drive to the following venues: The Goodstone Inn; The Salamander Resort & Spa; Buchanan Hall; Trinity Episcopal Church. We are within 30 minutes of more that 50 wineries, ciders and breweries which are also popular destinations for our guests.
Brookcliffe is an ideal getaway for guests who enjoy the country life for a long weekend or an extended stay. You're welcome to accompany us as we do our daily chores with our Border Collie, Finn, feeding and caring for our two retired horses in the barn, filling the bird feeders and working in our vegetable gardens. The heated pool is a true delight, particularly swimming at night under the stars with the twinkly lights in the pergola to guide you back indoors. The hot tub is open year round and is a great way to relax in the evening listening to the Barred Owls along Beaverdam Creek, spotting fox in the pasture and watching deer visiting the salt lick under the apple tree.
We've found the house to be very comfortable for the senior members of our family too. Both levels are entirely accessible without any steps, including the short walk from the car. Both showers are step-in rather than tubs for easy access and there is a teak bench available for the large shower upstairs for anyone who may need it. This arrangement can be difficult to find in a country setting.
We're recently retired professionals who have lived in the Middleburg area for the past 25 years. I spent over 30 years in the Washington defense contracting community and founded a consulting firm. My husband, Jim, practiced medicine as an anesthesiologist. Now that we're no longer commuting to Northern VA, we have time to enjoy our farm on a full-time basis and look forward to making the guest house available to others who appreciate the solitude and beauty of this area.
Originally from Louisville, KY, I moved to Washington in 1982 after earning a Masters degree in International Business. I lived in Georgetown and Chevy Chase, D.C. for several years before migrating to farms in Upperville, Warrenton and Middleburg so that I could keep my horses at home rather than boarding them in Middleburg. I've fox hunted in Virginia, Maryland and also in Ireland and enjoyed competing in combined training events as well as playing polo on the womens' adult amateur team at UVA. I've travelled overseas extensively, as has Jim, and we spent 2 weeks on a private African safari in Botswana and Zimbabwe on our honeymoon.
Jim speaks Spanish and Russian. He grew up on Long Island where he was a life guard at Jones' Beach and enjoyed frequent sojourns into NYC. He is an accomplished downhill skier and completed the Marine Corps Marathon several years ago. We're both PADI certified Advanced scuba divers. Jim earned a degree in Biochemistry at Johns Hopkins and attended Georgetown Medical School, completing his residency at George Washington University. He recently retired from practice after taking care of patients at Reston Hospital for 20 years.
Carol purchased this house in 1999
Having interests in fox hunting, polo and eventing, we couldn't imagine a better place to live than Middleburg. The area attracts people from all over the world who are accomplished, interested in the sporting life, share a love of animals and a respect for nature. Visitors can't believe we live in such a pristine setting, yet we're just 30 minutes from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). Living in Middleburg provides a rare opportunity to enjoy a rural yet elegant lifestyle with access to the highest quality entertainment, cultural events, museums and international cuisine.
Our 30 acre property is unique in many ways. Brookcliffe is surrounded by much larger estates which are in Conservation Easement. This means it's very likely that our protected scenic views and complete privacy will never change due to encroaching development. We're fortunate that our farm is bounded by Beaverdam Creek, a bold stream that flows year round and is a magnet for all kinds of wildlife. There is a one-lane bridge at the head of our driveway and we often see people pausing to take photos of the bridge, our pasture and horses. We also have an unrestored Civil War era log cabin which is visible from Foxcroft Rd. near the farm entrance. Civil War artifacts have been found on our property, located less than half a mile from a Civil War battleground near the village of Unison. Indian artifacts dating back several hundred years can be found at the base of the cliffs overlooking Beaverdam Creak.
Jim and I live on the property and are available to answer any questions guests might have about the farm or local attractions. We've spent the last 15 years improving Brookcliffe and it's truly heaven on earth for the two of us to live here. We work outside together every day, weather permitting, and notice the changes from season to season, such as Red Tailed Hawk nests on our floodplain, Bald Eagles hunting from branches above the creek, wild turkeys in the woods around the house, Pileated Woodpeckers visiting our bird feeders and the Red Fox kits frolicking in our back meadow in the Spring. We're so fortunate to live in such a beautiful place!
Thank you so much for sharing your home with us! It was such a nice weekend--your property is beautiful. We loved your Border Collie, Finn, and your horses, Pal & Sebastian. Carol, you were so warm and welcoming throughout our stay. We appreciate it!
8 girls stayed here this past weekend for my bachelorette party, and we could not have picked a better place! We were looking for seclusion, and we definitely found it. The pool area is beautiful, with a beautiful view. We got in the pool at 9 am and didn't get out until dinner time. The area next to the pool has a beautiful terrace overlooking the barn and pasture. We enjoyed feeding the horses, and we loved meeting Finn, Carol and Jim's border collie! Carol and Jim were so gracious and accommodating during our stay, and even brought us vegetables and a watermelon from their garden. Our only regret was not staying longer!
8 friends and I stayed at Carol & Jim's farm for the weekend and had an incredible time! The house is located on a beautiful piece of land with lovely views around the pool area. It is a very quiet and peaceful place to spend time.
Carol was extremity easy to work with in coordinating the trip and goes the extra mile to make sure the house is set up for when you arrive. We really spent most of the weekend hanging around the pool and It really could not have been a better stay. Thank you Carol & Jim! We all hope to be able to return next year!
Our group had the best time last weekend at this property. It's an easy, quick ride from the metro DC area, but it felt like a world away. We rented the house with a few families that we have vacationed with once a summer for a few years now. We went to the Eastern Shore of MD the past few years but decided to change it up. This place was great for our group and both the kids and adults were happy. The pool and outdoor area is where we spent most of the time and it was the perfect spot to sip a drink as the sun set over the hills. I really liked how there were numerous spots to sit outside around the house and plenty of space to relax. The kiddos loved feeding the horses who were just down the hill and also enjoyed exploring the woods and creek on the property. Also, the owner clearly takes care of this house and puts love and care into the details. Everything was very clean, nicely decorated, and thoughtfully laid out. The adults all agreed that we would return in a heartbeat. Anyone looking for a relaxing, low-key getaway that's only an hour and change away from most of the metro DC area should consider this property. Once you bust out of the Dulles area heading west and catch a glimpse of the rolling hills and the Shenandoah mountains in the distance, you will immediately feel a peaceful energy.
Thanks Carol for the hospitality!
I, along with 9 dear friends, stayed at Carol's property for our annual Girl's Cabin Weekend this year. We have been doing a similar trip for over 5 years, and this house has by far been the best. Beautiful pool and outdoor area, plenty of beds for everyone, and well-stocked with essentials (spices, oil, coffee, sugar, towels, plates, silverware, paper towels etc.) Carol was very accommodating and available without interrupting the fun. The house is an easy drive from DC, with a Costco and grocery store in near by Leesburg. We may have found our annual house! Thank you for a perfect weekend, Carol! - Kelly
Carol and Jim's house was absolutely perfect. We were a group of 8 girls staying there for the weekend and, despite the rain, we had an amazing time! Carol was so helpful from the start -- giving recommendations for meals and helping with ideas. The house was perfect -- had everything we needed and was clean and comfortable! We had dinner catered one night from Market Salamander (at Carol's suggestion) - and it was great! Amy was so nice to work with there. The house is also perfect distance to both Middleburg and Upperville, as well as wineries. We had a fantastic weekend and I can't wait to go back!
What a lovely Memorial Day weekend we had at Brookcliffe! A group of friends with young kids gathered at the house to relax and cook good food. The house was perfect for us! The kids enjoyed the heated pool and feeding carrots to the horses, plus there was a long rope swing in a tree that provided much entertainment. For grownups, we could sit on the patio under twinkling lights after the kids went to bed. The owners provide everything you might need--towels, sheets, even paper towels--and check in to make sure all is well. The house is only an hour from DC but feels totally different, with rolling hills and rambling streams. I'm sure there is tons to do in Middleburg but we mostly happily stayed housebound, except to go to the Safeway 10 minutes away. We hope to be back again soon!
Brookcliffe Farm is perfectly located for guests to enjoy a variety of activities--vineyard tours, Civil War era destinations, historic plantations, arboretums, special equestrian activities such as steeplechase races, fox hunting, polo and events at Great Meadow just 20 minutes away. You can easily spend a full day exploring historic Middleburg, just 10 minutes from our farm, with great dining, shops and the Salamander Resort & Spa. We are also located only 10 minutes from the quaint village of Upperville.
