Guestbook comments from the manager

We just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful time we had in Crested Butte. River Nest was the perfect place for my husband and I to unwind. We left the home everyday to explore the area and found the road to be well maintained and easily traveled. Returning each evening to the hot tub overlooking the river was such a luxury. We had everything we needed, as far as kitchen ware, bath towels and linens. The home was comfortable, cozy and suited us well. The homeowner made improvements to the home that the past guest mentioned. It was clear to us that the home was well maintained and cared for. We just wanted to make sure you all know what a fantastic time we had. Thank you for the hospitality, we would definitely return to this home.

Absolutely perfect location

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I both agreed, we could definitely live at this house. On the back deck you can barely see any other cabins, but plenty of the river. If the price was lower we would probably be traveling here every year

Disappointed for the price we paid

  • 2 of 5

We do not usually provide reviews for places that we have stayed at but we are making an exception with this home. The house was very large and had a wonderful river going through it in the backyard. This is what made us book this particular house & pay the premium price per night.

We were pulling a trailer with ATV’s and upon arriving, we noticed that the road to get to the house was one of the worst roads we had ever driven on. It was nearly 80% full of large potholes. We had to experience this every time we went anywhere. The house is located at the bottom of a small, but steep hill and we had to pull our trailer in. The sloped driveway was so washed out and rutted that we were afraid our trailer would get stuck in the ruts (that appeared to have been there for some time). Beware that if you are pulling any kind of trailer, you will have to make a tight 90 degree turn to try to back into an extremely narrow drive. It will be difficult and it will take multiple attempts to maneuver it in every time, so do not plan on pulling it out much.

As we approached the front door, we saw that the sliding glass doors had a broken lock on them and the homeowner had a piece of wood in there to keep the door “locked”. Upon entering the house, we noticed that while nice, it was relatively outdated as far as plumbing fixtures, tile, etc. were concerned. The bathroom on the main floor had a basically unusable sink, as it was tucked in a corner and the smallest we had ever seen. My husband could barely squeeze in there to shave and brush his teeth. The two bathrooms both had sliding doors in the tub, but there were shower curtains on both the inside and outside (in addition to the sliding doors) with a note saying that they need to be there or there would be a leak within the walls. Seriously? How about the homeowner fix the problem? They are asking premium price for renting it out. The back deck also had major drop offs that someone could easily fall off.

If this had been a modest amount of money, we would have looked past the problems. When you pay that much, however, you do not expect to have the issues that this house has.

Also, if your body is not used to high altitudes, be careful. Crested Butte is at an altitude of 8,885 feet above sea level & “Crested Butte Mountain” reaches 12,162 feet. If you are from lower elevation states like in the Midwest, you may have difficulty breathing! We did and had to leave early and there is no getting any money back.

Owner's Response: Hi Jeffrey, To begin, we are so sorry that you got ill due to the altitude and had to cut your trip short. We want to thank you for your review and we appreciate your feedback. I apologize for the condition of the road and driveway, but we had a lot of rain this summer which contributes to their condition. I know the owner plans on regrading the driveway and has been in touch with the county about the road. Nonetheless, even if they were in great condition the driveway is not ideal for a trailer and we would have given you the heads up had we known you were planning on bringing one. As far as the sliding glass door goes, we haven't had any issues in the past with it and we would have gladly gone by to help you with it. On a side note, because this is Crested Butte the wood bar is extra security to keep a potential bear out. As far as the tile and fixtures go, we do make sure to post recent photos so the guest knows what to expect. Please let me assure you that all of our homes we rent are safe and up to code. Had we known about any of the issues you were having we would have been able to assist you during your stay. Thanks again for your feedback and we hope that someday you are able to visit the Rockies again, as we know it was on your Bucket List.

Tranquility in Crested Butte

  • 5 of 5

My fiance and I stayed at River Nest for a romantic getaway and all I can say is WOW! The views are incredible! I want to live here! The hot tub is right on the river, so peaceful. The home had everything we needed. Love the privacy and tranquility of the home. We plan to come back every summer. We love CB!
