You will never experience anything like our mill anywhere else, steeped in the country side but just 1 hour from Nice airport, on the river, totally private, just get back to nature and shed the weight of work, ill health, stress, problems just seem so far away in our corner of heaven. Listen to the birds, paddle in the brooke that forms in the garden on its way down to the river, swim in the pool and just chill.
Children just love it, teenagers love it and parents love it, bonding with the whole family is just natural
Imagine long, lazy summer days lounging by the pool, splashing in the river, sitting under the shade of the weeping willow keeping cool with your feet in the babbling brook that flows through the garden reading your favourite book, sipping a glass of local red wine or an ice cold prosecco. The children running free searching for frogs, fishing for little river fish and seeing who is the first in the pool every day. Finish the day with a bbq and a walk into the village for an ice-cream or to listen to the local band playing or even join the locals at the village dance. You will not experience anything like it anywhere else. The old mill can be found a few hundred metres along a country lane, steeped in the countryside yet 15 minute walk from the village or 5 minutes by car. Silent and peaceful set in its own gardens surrounded by trees and the sound of the brook gently babbling by providing the mill with it's own private rock pools big enough for bathing. The river also feed the swimming pool at the mill free flowing in and out, no products are used in our natural pool.
You can buy an internet key for your laptop if you need to keep in touch.
There is a large private garden.
We have a proper pizza oven and gas BBQ.
The mill has various terraces with seating arrangements for quiet reading or an alfresco aperitif overlooking the river before lunch or dinner in the garden or by the river or even around the pool, the choice is yours.

Allavena purchased this villa in 2008
It is magical
Just the peace and the feeling of being in a different world.
What a great Easter break, the weather was glorious and the scenery so peaceful, we walked and walked and even had a dip in the pool. Well done Sandro for creating a piece of heaven
A wonderful place to relax, unwind and recharge the batteries. The Old Mill is wonderful in location - lots of wild life to observe including some of the prettiest butterflies. The facilities are excellent and the accommodation very comfortable. The pizza oven makes great pizzas and the local eateries particularly in Pigna and Apricale are superb. A trip to the beach is a great day out although you feel relieved to get back and shut the gates immersing yourself back into your own little world. We loved our two weeks at the Old Mill and would recommend it to anyone looking for some time to get away from the rat race.
The Old Mill is simply a magical place. We quickly felt like it was our own, and loved every minute. The pictures really don't do it justice - it's all it The rooms are comfortable (our big bed in the master room was the most comfortable mattress ever!!) and we loved cooking in the tiny but beautiful kitchen. Sandro's olive oil is delicious, by the way. It's very clean and for the 4 of us there was plenty of room. We spent every day relaxing in the yard, braving dips in the chilly pool, and hiking down the river - if you go far down enough you can find some amazing natural swimming holes. We fired up the pizza oven and had fun making our own pizzas from scratch using herbs from the garden!
Sandro met us and was so kind and accomodating, he returned again to bring us some supplies for the heater and the pizza oven, and also took us up into the old town to show us a hike - it was STEEP, but the hike was incredible with valley views and wild strawberries included. By the way, take Sandro's advice about food shopping at Maxi Sconto in Campo Rosso - an incredible selection of really great food and low prices.
We did a few day trips into Dolceaqua (the little castle is actually worth exploring), Villefranche-sur-mer (great little beach), and Cannes (for an incredible catamaran sail on the bay). We cooked a lot but also had a meal at the Ristorante Terme which we really enjoyed - typical Ligurian cuisine and fairly heavy but lovely. Mostly we just wanted to relax at home - which is how we came to see this beautiful place. We truly loved our time at the Mill, and want to return one day - hopefullly sooner rather than later! Thank you Sandro for everything!
I stayed at the Mill with my wife, we wanted to escape a cold winter and have some peace and tranquillity somewhere not to far to drive from. Well the Old Mill is truly an amazing place, the weather was just perfect and the property is a gem. Spring had arrived and all the flowers and trees were blooming, the scent in the air was just magical, everything we were hoping it would be.
The website describes the property well and Pigna is a very charming village. We recommend the gelateria for the ice creams and the famous Cappuccini which are huge!!
After relaxing the first week, we adventured around the valley and there are some very pretty places, Dolceacqua and Apricale are definitely worth a trip.
We would recommend staying in the Mill, especially if you are looking to escape the dark weather at home!!
Looking forward to coming back,
Jerry and Wilma
Thank you so much for a fabulous stay at the Old Mill in Pigna. Our week here in the sunshine has surpassed our expectations. We loved the remoteness of the mill which gave us some much needed relaxation (it is possible with a 10 month old baby!!) We will most definitely be returning to the Old Mill and this pretty part of Italy and hope to discover more of what Pigna and the surrounding area has to offer.
Thank you again for a perfect week!
Mara, Matteo and Amelia
Thanks a lot Sandro for sharing your piece of paradise! The hosting was just perfect and we got a very nice family gathering and we will for sure be back!
There are some moments with a big "M" which cannot be described and this holiday was one of them, thank you again!
The Wood family
We (4 adults) arrived in late May at this converted stone mill, having driven from Nice (about 90 minutes). We loved the location and the accommodation: the bedrooms are a good size and their is plenty of space downstairs in the lounge, However, when we weren't out exploring we spent most of our time outside in the garden area next to the spring pools. It was delightful
There is plenty to see and do in the surrounding areas, and if you like getting out there are some absolutely stunning walks in some of the neighbouring villages.
If you arrive in late May (as we did) or September it can be quite cool, especially in the evenings, and the mill can get quite cold (there is a boiler to heat the rooms that Sandro turned on for us). However, that did not spoil our enjoyment of the holiday at all.
A very memorable vacation.
Pigna is a medieval village steeped in countryside with small rivers and rock pools, hiking tracks and trekking trails, cycle paths and some of the most beautiful nature trails changing with the seasons. Pigna is strategically placed 1 hour from Nice international airport, 1 hour from Monte Carlo and 3 hours from Milan.
The famous Italian Riviera is just 20 minutes away and you can choose between the stony beaches of Bordighera and Ventimiglia or the sandy beaches of Sanremo and Ospedaletti.
Pigna boasts the famous church of St Michele, full of the paintings of Canavesio from the 15th century including the priceless politico which hangs behind the alter.
The chapel of San Bernado's frescos depicting biblical scenes by Canavesio, have been painstakingly restored over a 10 year period.
The mountain of Torraggion dominated the village and can be reached by a 5 hour hike from the 'refugio Allavena' in the Melosa area just 20 mins from the village by car or 2 hours by foot
