Why Ms Joanna Green Mr David Green chose Lassay-les-Châteaux

With our busy lives looking after four children and being self employed we have really enjoyed and needed holidays away at our cherished house in France. When we went over to France looking at hundreds of properties as potential holiday homes, Les Maison Fontaine and its setting on the edge of a sleepy village and stunning countryside really stood out as something quite special. The house is located near Lassay les Chateaux which is a pretty market village packed full of character. Market day is Wednesday and there is a wonderful rose garden by the central square, with over 250 species of rose. The local C14th castle is one of the best preserved in France and there are shops, bars and restaurants of every description nearby. Swimming, tennis, cycling and fishing are all popular sports; the surrounding countryside is full of small farms, large forests and picturesque rivers and streams stocked with trout. Caen ferry port can be reached in 70mins, St Malo ferry port in 90mins.

What makes this cottage unique

It is in such a peaceful, unspoilt area of Normandy with the lowest crime rate in the whole of France! I have poured money into the interior, adding real touches of luxury like the new roll top bath in the master bedroom, and recently a lovely new kitchen. I sincerely want anyone who stays in my cottage to relax and revel in the surroundings as much as we do! New for 2017, Huntsman multifuel woodburner, a new floor in the kitchen and living room and a Nespresso machine.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My mother and I had a simply glorious week at this magical and cosy cottage. My mother has not been too well recently and i can honestly say, that by the end of our week at this peaceful haven she felt rejuvenated and well.

The owners have bent over backwards to furnish the cottage with every home from home comfort, and the beautifully made beds for our arrival were a delight with 100 % cotton and pressed sheets :).

We really enjoyed The Lassay Les Chateaux restaurant with its excellent and affordable menu and walking around the cobbled Medieval streets after our meal. We watched the sun setting behind the Chateau itself while we were walking around the lake. Stunning and exquisitely French!

I thoroughly recommend this beautiful cottage for a peaceful get away in comfort and style and Joanna and David the owners are lovely helpful owners who genuinely wanted us to get the best from our stay. Thank you both very much.

The cottage lies in a small and pretty village 3 km away from the petite and historical town of Lassay Les Chateaux, with its imposing fairytale fortress and great patisseries, bars, cafes, petite cosy restaurants, well stocked coop and fabulous outdoor pool..The racing track at Le Mans is 35mins away for those car racing enthusiasts, with the peace of the cottage being a welcome return!

We find that a trip to Le Ferte Mace lake (23km) with its fab beach, boat, fun car hire and cafe followed by dinner in the cosmopolitan spa town of Bagnoles De Lorne a few miles down the road is just one example of a really great day out. There are no end of short trips from the cottage to historical towns like Domfront, castles, and interesting attractions. You can take quiet country walks and cycle rides on the small lanes directly from the Cottage, and just 1km away is a wonderful planned walk which follows views depicted by the great Impressionist painter Emile Pissarro, and pass the house which he frequently holidayed in.

For swimming lovers there is a fantastic swimmimng pool in Le Ferte Mace which has a fun tube slide for kids and other interesting swimming/ playing areas.

A picturesque and tranquil place to stay

  • 5 of 5

A lovely property, beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you could need. The location was extremely peaceful, just the occasional tractor trundling past and a very vocal cockerel! Shops in the local town of Lassay les Chateux are well stocked and the staff are friendly and helpful. A tour of the Chateux itself was interesting too.

We enjoyed following the "Pissaro walk" in the evenings to lovely sunsets, spotting red squirrels and a snake on the way.

There are plenty of activities and attractions within driving distance, a car being a must have in this rural location.

A testament to our lovely holiday was our 11 year old daughter crying on the last day because she didn't want to leave!

Comfortable cottage in a pretty hamlet.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in this little cottage and it gave us all that we needed as an antidote to life at home. It was very clean and had full facilities. We were unable to go down the lane to use the garden as the weather was miserable but we made good use of the many TV channels.

The nearby town was 10 minutes drive away and had a good range of shops. There were enough interesting sites to fill a week, we made a journey to Mont St Michel which was just beautiful. All in all a good holiday.

beautiful little hideaway

  • 5 of 5

A charming period property in a pretty village with lots of friendly locals both French and English.

The best equipped holiday home I have ever stayed in, the owners really have thought of everything even down to charcoal for the bbq. Really pretty cottage and very stylish decor. The area is lovely, Lassay les Chateaux is a gorgeous medieval town with several good restaurants and bars, pretty gardens and of course the chateau to visit. The town has a large supermarket on the outskirts, and bakers, butchers and a small grocers within the centre.

Thoroughly recommend this as a place to stay for a delightful French break.

Autumn colour in Normandie

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is set in a quiet rural village in southeast Normandie with wonderful views of the countryside straight from the bedroom window. We especially enjoyed the hazy light and morning mists burning off before lunchtime and the frenetic chirping of the birds. I plotted several routes and ran on alternate days, while my partner did yoga daily. In between times, we explored the picturesque countryside and local villages.

The house was comfortable with everything we needed, including a well equipped kitchen, but the bedroom was the star feature. Having a bath in the bedroom was a new experience for us, and though we weren't sure about this at first, we quickly came to appreciate its benefits. Elsewhere in the house, we made regular use of the log burner, which once started gave good heat to the lounge. Portable oil heaters are also available in the main rooms, if you need them. (We did at times, due to the time of year).

The property is very much as depicted, furnished in a shabby-chic style, but with no shabbiness. Mrs Green was a great host and responded to all our correspondence cordially and quickly. Though 'out of season' we still managed a visit to La Chateau de Lassay, which was open for La Toussaint weekend (recommended).

The Autumn break was just what we needed.

Delightful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a splendid week in this two hundred year old beautiful cottage. It's full of memorabilia which retains its character whilst at the same time the 21st century electrical appliances are all there, from a large TV down to a decent hairdryer. Plenty of hot water, super bathroom, the large double bed was more comfortable than our own at home! If you are hoping for a peaceful Normandy holiday, look no further. Situated on a quiet country lane, all you can hear are the birds and a distant cockerel crowing in the morning.

Shops? Just two miles to the small town of Lassay les Chateau , with its beautiful medieval castle, where you will find a boulangerie, pharmacie, local butcher, small friendly supermarket, a really good restaurant and several little brasseries . We just loved the whole experience, and can't wait to return.

Lovely and charming in every way!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying in this charming cottage. The village is very peaceful and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. The cottage is exactly as described and has everything you would need for relaxing stay. Joanna and David Green, the owners, could not have been nicer or more helpful in coordinating our visit. They made many suggestions for things to do in the area--we did several. The nearby town of Lassay les Chateaux is just beautiful. We loved the Pissaro walk and just as Joanna said, a little dog came out to greet us!

The cottage is very nicely furnished and has very comfortable beds. I could have stayed forever!
