About Martin de Koning
We are an Anglo-Dutch family who bought this property from an important Italian family in Genova. We set about renovating the main villa with the purpose of having a family retreat in Northern Italy that was large enough to entertain family and friends and big enough for our teenage children to bring their friends along as well. We have decorated in a modern style according to our own taste. So this is not a typical rental property with Ikea furniture. We have tried to maintain the characteristic design of the house but give it a contemporary look and feel.
Martin de Koning purchased this Villa in 2010
Why Martin de Koning chose Cairo Montenotte
Because it is ideally located near the Mediterranean Sea and is close to several interesting towns with airports: Genova, Torino, Nice (France) and Milano. The small town of Cairo Montenotte is only a three-minute drive from the house where you find shops and restaurants (and even a hospital). With its medieval center and the locals chatting unhurriedly with one another, this is the unpretentious vita bella of Italy without tourists. There is plenty of room for guests to each do their own thing whether you want to hang at the pool, play tennis, go hiking, go mountain biking or read a book in the shade under the oak trees.
What makes this Villa unique
The property is easily accessible, ( a practically level 75 meter drive on a dirt road from the nearby tarmac road), close to the nearby town of Cairo Montenotte for shopping purposes and only a 12-minute drive to the motorway. It is tranquil with lovely views but you do not have to go very far to be part of the bustling Italian action along the coast. For families with children it offers plenty of entertainment with a large pool, a tennis court, a ping pong table and mountain bikes.

The property was as described and had real wow factor. There was plenty of space for 20 work colleagues to relax and have fun as well as host some workshops.
The staff who look after the property were very attentive and made the whole stay very easy and enjoyable.
Great home for large groups!
3 families stayed at the villa for 3 weeks and we absolutely loved it. There was plenty of room to spread out and have space to yourself. The large kitchen was fully equipped with all sorts of tools for a chef. The wood burning pizza oven made some of the best pizza I’ve ever had! The kids enjoyed the pool, playing tennis and watching movies in the TV room. The pool is heated via solar panels, so it was still quite cold but still nice enough to swim on very warm days. The grocery store is only 5-10 mins away so it makes it easy to go on quick grocery runs. There are shutters on every window, which is nice for keeping the rooms dark when sleeping in mornings. The beds are comfortable and there are plenty of towels.
Although I gave it 5 stars, there were a few things I wanted to share. The clothes drier was broken and unusable for the entire first week we were there and ended up having to be replaced. Having said that, the response time from the house manager was very quick, it just took time to order a new drier. One of the toilets also broke and took a few days to be repaired due to the weekend. I would also caution you to bring your own DVD’s because a lot of the ones at the house are scratched and unreadable.
Overall it was a fabulous, unforgettable visit. We loved our stay and would return!
It is a perfect location to visit Barolo vineyards, driving distance to Cinque Terre and soccer stadium in Turin. House lovely and large. Pool is wonderful for all. Great outdoor seating and especially using the authentic pizza oven!!!! Hired Paola as a chef...superb food and Eleanora was especially helpful for any of our questions. Recommend it highly
Everything about the house, the area, and the staff is first rate. No matter what you want to do - relax, entertain, make brick oven pizza!, visit vineyards, or head to the beach- Martin has provided the ultimate home-base for you while the incomparable duo of Eleonora and Lorenzo take care of all your needs.
Thanks! Come back to visit again. Best, Martin
A beautiful Easter in Liguria
We spent Easter at the villa in Cairo Montenotte in Italy. The fabulous weather, the surroundings, the food and wine and good company made this a memorable occasion.
Went with easter with a group to this dream home. The descriptions were fantastic yet the reality exceeded my expectations.
A very spacious atmospheric house situated on a hill. A huge kitchen with four refrigerators and two dishwashers. Fantastic to cook with many people together. A sitting room with a huge fireplace, guarded by two stone lions.
The house is very well equipped, luxurious bathrooms, computer room, washing machines, piano, a well stocked bookcase etcetera.
The house is surrounded by a giant garden and a few terraces. And then I didn’t mention yet the tennis court, swimmingpool and a little house to make pizza’s in.
The setting is superb with open views on hills and the surroundings are beautiful with lots of variety of animals and flowers.
Unfortunately, our visit lasted only three days but I hope to come back soon!
The property lies in a hilly region and offers lovely panoramas of rolling hills but is a mere 4 minutes drive to the centre of the small town of Cairo Montenotte. The surrounding villages have delightful historic centres. There are several towns within a 30 minute to a two-hour drive that merit a visit including Savona, Acqui Terme, Barolo, Torino, Genova, Milano or Nice in France. The nearest town to Cairo M. is Savona which is a mere 25 minutes drive on the Mediterranean coast. From there you can follow the coast west in the direction of France or in the other direction to Genova. In either case a delightful coastal road takes you through small towns and villages which in the Summer become bathing resorts. Typically, these communities have small public beaches as wel as private beaches. To the North is the Piedmonte region, famous for its wines (e.g. Barolo) and excellent food. Torino, an old university town and home to Fiat, is worth a visit as is Milano at a distance of 180 km.
