About Joseph Baldwin

I was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. I have been vacationing with my family on Dauphin Island since I was 5 years old. I currently live in Theodore, Alabama, about a 30 minute drive from DI. I have been a nurse for the last 37 years and an ultrasononographer for the last 14 years.

Joseph Baldwin purchased this cottage in 1955

Why Joseph Baldwin chose Alabama Gulf Coast

This house has been in our family since about 1955. It was built by my grandmother on 2 lots. The lots were purchased before the bridge was built and the house was built shortly after that. We have spent the last 1 1/2 years renovating it. We have put lots of tender loving care into its' revival and we love it.

What makes this cottage unique

This pretty little cottage is in a prime location for birdwatching. It is close to the center of town and a very cheerful home away from home. The house is at ground level and there are no steps to climb.

The Beautiful Birders Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay on Dauphin Island in the birders cottage! The house was so nice & clean. We are already making plans to go back later this year and next. We would recommend it to our friends and family. Thank you Joe & Gina!

Great!

  • 5 of 5

'Birders Cottage' is a comfortable 2-bedroom cottage that sits across the road from Indian Shell Mound Park. It has become our favorite place to stay on Dauphin Island, partly because we're usually there for the Spring warbler migration, and the Shell Mound happens to be a migrant bird hotspot! But that's not the whole reason. The BC also happens to be a neat, very clean, and extremely well-stocked vacation house. We enjoy biking on the Island, and the cottage has a selection of bicycles for guests to use. It's an easy bike ride to the bakery, the grocery, and the fish store, which is convenient for those wanting to cook some of their own meals. The oven/stovetop is brand new. In the backyard is a deck that is nice for winding down in the evening or revving up in the morning. Add to all this the graciousness of the owners, Joe and Gina, and you can't go wrong.

Great for Birdwatchers

  • 5 of 5

We only had time for a short visit but the house was great for our stay at the birdwatchers meeting because we could walk out the back door and immediately start seeing many of the migrant birds at the Shell Mounds area. Definitely would book again. House was very clean and comfortable. Kitchen was well-equipped but we took advantage of many opportunities to eat seafood at local restaurants and did no cooking.

Comfortable, relaxing and homey.

  • 5 of 5

Communication and contact with owners was exceptional. The cottage was well stocked with the basics and attractively simple. It invited relaxation and that "get away" vacation feeling.

The location was near to bird watching sanctuaries, the historical fort, walking trails and prehistoric Indian shell mounds. We were able to explore the island via bicycles and relished the opportunity to be outdoors hearing the birds and smelling the blooming flowers. The drive to West End Beach was short and the views westward and out to the gulf were breathtaking. Thank you for a wonderful trip and the use of your tidy island cottage. We will make every effort to return.

Great winter getaway.

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd visit to the birders cottage. Gina and Joe are great hosts and good people. The cottage is bright, clean and a great place to relax. Everything you need and more is supplied. We love walking with our dog on the beaches and through the bird sanctuary. If you like seafood, you'll love Skinner's Seafood. They have super fresh shrimp and fish and their steamed shrimp dinners are great. We visited Bellingrath gardens and home (https://bellingrath.org/). The azaleas were in bloom and the gardens were beautiful. It is a short drive from the island and is a great place to visit. We also visited the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile. It is a beautiful cathedral. We love the laid back, friendly feel of the island and will be back again.
