About Liz Bortniak

My husband, Don, and I moved here from Lake Worth, Florida. My husband grew up in Herkimer, NY while I spent most of my life in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. We love Virginia and look forward to our new adventure here.

Liz Bortniak purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Liz Bortniak chose Blue Ridge Highlands

We were spellbound with the beauty of this property and bought it at an auction in 2012. The history of the original builder/owner, Thomas L. Felts in 1904, is really fascinating as is the beauty of this land and the charming area of Galax.

What makes this cottage unique

Access to New River Trail is literally runs through our property. We have our own beautiful little private hide-away pavilion located on Chestnut Creek. It is a great place to relax, read a book, dine or fish.

We are adjacent to the New River Trail and Chestnut Creek at mile marker 2. New River Trail is recognized as one of the top 10 mountain bike trails in the country. August is an exciting time in Galax, which is when they host the Old Fiddler's Convention.

Firefly Fantasia

  • 5 of 5

We had the most enjoyable stay. The weigh house is renovated beautifully, so posh and comfortable. We were right on the trail, so perfect for riding, walking and watching all the trail goers. At dusk the fireflies would light the front yard. It was fantastic. One of my most favorite trail rides and certainly the best stay. We loved the Creek Bottom Brewery in Galax. Thanks so much for a wonderful weekend!

We had a wonderful stay. The cottage was very nicely furnished and clean. Such a peaceful place, yet so convenient to the New River Trail and Galax. We hope to return in the fall.

Clean, comfortable, sweet place.

We are so glad we got to stay in this great cottage, right on the New River Trail and just a couple miles from downtown Galax. Such a beautiful place to watch birds, deer, and fireflies right from the back porch. Terrific customer service!

Adorable and clean in a perfect setting

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the cottage was a pleasant experience from beginning to end. Booking the stay was easy, and the owners made access very convenient. The picturesque scene as you drive up to the property was just the preview for the attractively furnished interior of this unique cabin. It was meticulously clean. Many kitchen and bath staples are provided by the owners so you're not having to bring piles of supplies along with you. Some nice wine and cheese and crackers were a pleasant surprise. The view from the back porch was just lovely and made more entertaining with a daily parade of deer and turkey. Proximity to the New River Trail is a huge bonus. The 2 mile stretch into the center of Galax was an easy level and beautiful walk that we did several times. We brought our kayaks and were able to keep them on the porch. We paddled a stretch of the New River, Crooked Creek, and even a bit of Chestnut Creek. Grayson Highlands State Park was an hour drive, and yes, there were ponies galore to be seen on the hike. Checkout was so easy - no long list of things to do or clean as in other rentals we've encountered. A great peaceful location, but very close to town. We hope to be back again!

Enjoyed this beautiful place so much! It's everything I would ever want in a vacation rental. A wonderful owner provides an exceptional experience as well as wonderful hospitality. The bed, the wrap around porch and the towels were the best part. Cannot wait to stay here again!

Can't wait to go back

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here over the July 4th weekend and loved it! When we first checked in we had trouble connecting to the WiFi (completely user error), so the owner came over to help us out. He was so helpful! We enjoyed all the little touches - from the wine and cheese waiting for us to the fluffy bath towels - which there were plenty of! Very well decorated and cozy.

It was a rainy weekend so when we weren't biking we were enjoying the view from the porch. We used the grill most nights. Unfortunately the brewery that so many folks mentioned was closed on Sunday and Monday so we never got a chance to go there.

The house is right on the trail so we liked that we didn't have to load up our bikes every time we wanted to go for a ride. We are already planning our next trip.
