No better view, and great central location.

Guestbook comments from the manager

From the minute we drove up to the house we were in love. As you pull into the driveway you have a spectacular view of the waipio valley and it only gets better when you get into the house. The house is fantastic, nothing has been overlooked. The lanai is the place to relax, enjoy the view and listen to the surf, although you can do this from inside as well. The furnishings were first class. The master bedroom is huge, the bed was super comfortable, and the sliders to the lanai (with great outdoor shower) was perfect. The master also has a huge walk in closet and bath with jacuzzi tub. The main part of the house was very warm ,with dining, living and kitchen(fully stocked) all in one area - plenty of room. As there were only 2 of us we didn't even go into the other wing, but the rooms were all large and nicely appointed. Everything is new and I can't say enough about how nice this house is and how much we felt at home there. There is also a great in-law suite downstairs. Ron - the property manager, was available for our few questions. Thanks Ron! The town of honokaa has a nice grocery store, gas stations, restaurants, and shops to poke around in, about 10-15min. drive. Lastly, the biggest draw for this home is the valley itself. It is truly a sacred place. I never tired of looking at the view - you can see from all over the house. You can explore by walking down, or driving if you dare. If you have a chance, stay in this house, you'll be happy you did.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers.

Notes:
Located on the northern Hamakua Coast, the sacred Waipio Valley was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I, and an important center for political and religious life in Hawaii. Not only is 'The Valley of the Kings' an important site for Hawaiian history and culture, it's also a place of dramatic tropical beauty. This fertile valley is about one mile across and over five-miles deep, and surrounded by cliffs up to 2000-feet high. Waipio Valley was once the home of thousands of Native Hawaiians. Today, there are less than 100 residents living amongst the waterfalls, taro fields and rivers permeating the valley. Hawaii Island's tallest waterfall, Hiilawe Falls cascades down 1,300 feet in the back of Waipio. You can view the valley from the coastal Waipio Valley Overlook at the end of the Hamakua Heritage Corridor drive, or you can take a guided van tour, hike, or horseback ride to explore the hidden wonders within. Amazing place

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six adults and three young kids had a marvelous ten days in this beautiful home. The beds are comfortable, the furniture is comfortable, the kitchen functions very well, the house is clean and bug-free. So it was a great place to lounge and meditate upon the unbelievable view.

It is remote, as one reviewer mentioned, but as the Big Island's sites are quite distant from one another, it doesn't really matter where you stay, you still have to drive a lot. But when you drag yourself back in the evening, exhausted, there is the lovely lanai and the sound of surf awaiting you.

Breathtaking!

  • 5 of 5

My fiance (now wife) and I traveled with our parents to this vacation rental as part of our grand tour of the Big Island of Hawaii. Last time I visited the island I stopped at the lookout for all of 5 minutes, and I vowed I would return one day to further explore the beauty Waipio has to offer. After looking at all other vacation rentals around the area, this one best suited my needs (at least 4 beds, ocean view, and private) with ease.

When we arrived at the rental everything was perfect, and the property description was spot on. The management is very good a communicating. The pictures speak for themselves; it truly is paradise. The home is located on a private road and it is the second last property before the road dead ends (the last house being a long term residents of the area whom are very friendly), so this property is VERY private. The home is well appointed with natural and neutral colors though out. The kitchen is higher end (when compared to most vacation rentals) with above average dishware and cutlery, which is a very nice touch when contrasted against the usual "cottage rated" kitchen accessories other owners use. The beds were comfortable and there is a neat outdoor shower on the patio off the master, which I used every day during my stay while I peered into the valley.

Overall, we spent a lot of time on the balcony (which is only accessible by walking through the house). From there you can watch the whales breach in the water and the odd surfer catching a wave. We spent little to no time in the lower level (which is the studio walkout and a VERY large garage). It is worth noting that the lower level studio is not directly accessible from the main house, it has its own entrance with no internal stairways connecting the two.

I plan to return one day, and I would recommend for anyone to stay here. If you have an appetite for secluded nature with the comforts that come from a lavish home such as this one I would highly encourage you to stay at this rental, regardless of your party size.

Amazing Christmas

  • 5 of 5

We celebrated a family Christmas a little bit early in this wonderful home overlooking the Waipio Valley. It was definitely memorable to have this view and the tropical "jungle" sounds as our own. My son's family with 6 month old baby were in the little apartment downstairs. My husband and I, another son, daughter, their spouses and 2 more grandchildren were in the 4 bedrooms upstairs. We were quite comfortable and could enjoy time together, or apart. The kitchen was well supplied and we made use of the barbecue on the patio under the lanai. The owner had a little artificial tree with lights for us that added to the festivities. We explored various places from this location: west coast beaches, Botanical Gardens, Volcanoes National Park (bit of a drive for little people), and the van ride down into Waipio Valley. Magical with small children! The lanai is amazing and large. The grandkids ate out there and worked on crafts. Adults enjoyed the hammock and other comfortable seating while taking in the incredible surroundings. This home and location were just a very nice place to be! We won't forget this Christmas. Our grandson, 7, wants to know if we are coming here again next year!!! Can't blame him for wanting to make this a tradition!

What an amazing view. Stunning, just as it shows in the pictures along with the peace and tranquility found there. My wife and I just returned and found it was everything it was billed to be. Having seen the short you tube video link we were given we went right to the home. The home was very clean and had more kitchen utinsels/cookware than most other places we have stayed in. The BBQ grill was very clean and ready to use so we grilled steaks one evening and ate on the deck then and some mornings for breakfast as well. We saw whales and other marine life quite often from the deck. They had binoculars there to use. We hiked the steep paved road just below the home quite often for exercise and drove it in the jeep as well. We even hiked across the valley and on top of the other ridge opposite us. It was a great hike and did not see many people on the hike, (it was fairly steep) but safe. If you need beach the black sand beach is right below and accessible. The place is green and lush and very secluded which is what we were after. The location is up north but we did not feel that it was to long a drive to the Hilo or Kona side to see the volcano and other sites and at the end of the trip felt like we woke up and went to bed in one of the prettiest places on the island. Daniel promptly replied to all our inquiries and the home was great! I would recommend it, and particularly for families or larger groups.

Great house, gorgeous view

  • 5 of 5

This house is clean, comfortable, well stocked (including beach umbrellas!), quiet, and has a view of one of the most beautiful spots on the big island.

Please know it is isolated and a 30 min drive to Waimea. We enjoyed the drive - it was beautiful paaaing the fields and farm animals.

It is also on the wet side. We had fantastic weather but it can rain every day. It is also in a jungle. There are frogs that sing every night which we loved but certainly made a background noise. There are also centipedes and mosquitos- both managed fairly easily.

I really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to anyone. The owner was great to work with.

The outdoor shower is divine!

You can find some additional info about the area at dannat.net/waipio. An intro video shows how easy it is to get to the house.

There are two different horseback groups in the valley and both go through streams and are more relaxed and free with your use of the horses. A favorite of my girls.

There are boggy boards and a surfboard if you want to try the waves, an intermediate wave beach but favorite of locals.

Local guided tours of the valley can be arranged. Multiple trails so be sure and bring your hiking shoes, water shoes.
