About Alex Joyce

Our family loves adventure. We spend out time between Portland Oregon and Ogden Utah. We love the massive mountain skiing in Utah and the lush forest hikes and jagged coastlines of Oregon. We also like traveling and experiencing new places and cultures.

Alex Joyce purchased this house in 2010

Why Alex Joyce chose Utah

This house is an architectural gem. We purchased this house as a family getaway spot for skiing and adventuring in the mountains and rivers - all of which are very close by. We also wanted to be close to downtown Ogden, with its shops, bars and yoga studios. The house provides us, and you, a central base camp for all kinds of adventures!

What makes this house unique

A deep sitting porch with swing and several chairs. Major living space on first floor with bedrooms on second floor. Modern kitchen and 2 full bathrooms are stocked w/basics with grocery stores easily accessible. The living room has a 60' internet-enabled Smart TV and seats 6 while the adjacent parlor has a fireplace and seats 4.

Just like grandma's

  • 5 of 5

This was a fun house with lots of personality. I would loved to have known the history behind all the collectibles. The beds were comfortable and clean, showers were nice, plenty of hot water and towels. The weather was unseasonably warm during our visit and we appreciated all the extra fans supplied for more cooling. Wifi worked great. We didn't spend anytime in the back yard due to the weather but did enjoy the front porch with coffee in the morning and cocktails in the evening. We had to stay in a hotel the last night of our visit due to unexpected circumstances and we all lamented not being at the house.

Great stay!

  • 4 of 5

We loved this location. The house was very comfortable. There were a few things that would make us decide against it for next time. The kitchen was super hot when we were cooking. There is a little step from the main floor guest room to the hall that many of our kids and parents tripped on. The backyard was a little messy (while we were there someone came to mow it). Other then that we had a nice stay. The beds were comfortable and very clean. Thank you.

Grandma's house and Via Feratta

  • 5 of 5

I love Ogden....I think I could live there full time...first time I have said that about a place. The house was fantastic. Many memories of Grandma's house. We had a large group. The house was perfect. Drinks on the front porch, fajitas in the kitchen, what more can you ask for. All the cooking supplies we needed, however, we did bring cast iorn skillets for oven cooking.

Fantastic location for our Via Feratta trip. Hope to be back and explore some more.

How about some nightlights in the bathrooms? Yes, a house that has coasters. If you would like,I can make you some coasters out of pictures of the area.

Great Place to Stay While Skiing SnowBasin!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five felt very comfortable in this large, well-appointed home. The beds were comfortable (it was our first time on foam mattresses - we were fans!), and the drive to SnowBasin was less than 30 minutes. The house had everything that we needed and there was a small grocery store blocks away and a larger one less than a mile away. The layout of the house is great, and I loved turning on the gas fireplace and blower each night to wind down with a book after a long day of skiing.

We have young kids, and they were very interested in the decor, but I never felt like it was in danger of being broken by them. They loved the house too and asked to return next year!

Skiing: World-class downhill at Snowbasin, the site of the 2002 Winter Olympics. If you like steeps and high-end skiing, this place is for you. Huge 5,000 acre Powder Mountain is a mom-and-pop ski area with cat runs and an enormous skiable area. Less expensive, less steep, and a personal favorite of mine.

Hiking: Too much to list, but start out with an easy hike on the Bonaville Trail. Drive or walk up 27th St to the end, park and set out into the National Forest. Head up Taylor's Canyon or in the spring, head up to a frozen waterfall. Maps are provided in the guestbook at the house.

Coffee and breakfast: A few blocks from the house, there is a great locally-owned coffee shop called Kaffe Merchantile. They have great local coffee, espresso, pastries and tasty breakfast sandwiches.

If you're looking for a scenic breakfast/brunch/lunch spot, we recommend The Oaks in the Ogden Canyon. It is nestled in the canyon, overlooking the Ogden River. With plenty of outside seating and live music, this place is a great local spot.

Great Beer and Food: If you're looking for awesome food and beer, you must head to Slackwater Pizza near downtown. Friendly staff, awesome beer selection (including dozens of IPAs in the bottle), tasty house-made pizza, and a riverfront location with outside seating and plenty of local live music make this place a must see.
