Sintra is a magical place, and the whole area is of outstanding beauty and cultural interest, World Heritage since 1995. The city of Sintra is composed of several small 'villages'; the rural character and the quiet location allow you to have a peaceful time. But there is also a stimulating cultural offer, with many palaces, castles, parks & other options for active holidays (golf, beach, trekking). Several amazing Atlantic beaches are about 12 km away; downtown Lisbon can be reached in 30 min by car or about 40 min by train (trainstation in 450m).

Wellness, Beaches and Watersports: There are peaceful, sandy coves - ideal for children, wild rocky beaches and beaches the are ideal for surfing or body board: For the latter water sports particularly Praia do Guincho and Praia Grande should be mentioned, which have been the stage for various World Championships of these sports.

In June the famous 'Festival de Sintra' features classical music.

Feel like at home: Our place has games, guidebooks, videos and music CDs as well as fast wireless internet.

The fully-equipped kitchen has besides oven, stove, microwave and dishwasher also an electric kettle, a coffeemaker, many utensils, plates, glasses, cookware, spices and Portuguese cookbooks, in English.

You will find also find an iron and an ironing board.

There is a hair dryer.

Our apartment is perfect for family vacations, romantic weekend getaways, and we offer special rates for longer term rentals.

Serra de Sintra:: Tourist information: Known in ancient times as Mons Lunae (the Hills of the Moon), because of its strong traditions of astral cults, still clearly visible in the region's countless monuments and archaeological remains, the Serra de Sintra is a granite outcrop roughly 10 km long, rising abruptly between a vast plain to the north and the estuary of the River Tagus to the south. It is a mountain range that twists and turns, projecting into the Atlantic Ocean to form Cabo da Roca - the headland that marks the westernmost point of' continental Europe. The Serra de Sintra today contains a fabulous collection of monuments from a whole host of different epochs, ranging from prehistoric times to the present day. Thanks to its unique microclimate, Sintra has some of the most beautiful parks in Portugal, planted in keeping with a certain romantic taste, as well as a dense and verdant natural vegetation, affording the region an air of great majesty amidst the splash of different greens.

About Dagmar Hedrich

I am German and live in since more than 16 years Portugal with my family. I absolutely love Sintra, and when in 2005 an opportunity arose to buy and a house there, we renovated it for our own use during weekends, and for family visits. In 2009, we decided to rent it out to holiday makers.

Dagmar Hedrich purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Dagmar Hedrich chose Sintra area

Sintra is an excellent place to be in short distance to sandy beaches and breathtaking cliffs - and at the same time within easy reach from Lisbon.

What makes this apartment unique

Our house is one of the 'chalets' which were built around the turn of the century, when the railway line from Lisbon as built. The small town, which had hitherto been reserved to the Portuguese royal family and nobility as summer residence, then became popular among wealthy Portuguese. Besides the large country estates, smaller 'Chalets' for bourgeoisie and the artists were built. Our Villa was designed and built for José Ricardo, an actor and theatre director, who lived here until 1925. When we converted the house into a modern apartment, we tried tho maintain special atmosphere which we had felt at our very first visit.

Lovely house in Sintra

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I recently spent 10 days at Casa Jose Ricardo and were completely comfortable and satisfied with our stay there. The house is large, airy, filled with light, immaculately clean, and very nicely furnished. We had breakfast and dinner at the house each day - the kitchen is fully stocked with modern equipment and every imaginable kitchen supply. Train station and grocery store are in easy walking distance. The owner was in touch with us during our stay to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. Overall, a wonderful experience - highly recommended.

Centrally located, well furnished

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of two couples staying in Sintra for one week. The house has every convenience, most particularly in the kitchen. The main reason we rent houses is so we can cook and there wasn't a single thing extra we could have asked for. We walked everywhere including the grocery store and all of the major sites. The neighborhood is very quiet, parking is provided right in front of the house. Lots of towels and linens provided. The train station is about two blocks away. Two minor quibbles. The front entryway is dark and very musty smelling. Some air freshener or a dehumidifier would certainly help. Also, although the listing shows a washer/dryer, there is only a washer. Drying must be done on the racks that are provided or on the line that runs out the kitchen window. This was definitely an inconvenience since it rained several times during our stay. Nonetheless, we would definitely recommend this lovely house to anyone who wants to skip a hotel or B&B

Owner's Response: Dear Guests, many thanks for your kind review and for your appreciation of the kitchen. We think that cooking and eating are among the most enjoyable things when on holidays and take pride in offering the equipment and comfort that we would ourselves expect. But let me also respond to the 'quibbles': I am really sorry you were led to expect a dryer in our house, as we don't have one (yet). The original advert edited by me only shows the washing machine (its the German website "Fewo") - and I can only imaging that there must be some 'transformational' error when the information gets spread over other websites. My apologies for this! I will let the Fewo-Partners know about this so they can make sure the mistake is corrected. Regarding the entrance: while there are light switches near both doors, they can sometimes remain unnoticed. Will check if the bulb stopped working when I go to the house tomorrow! Finally, following periods of rain, like in your case, the entrance can smell a bit - we then try to air the entrance more often and have now also an air freshener ready for use when needed again. Many thanks again for making us aware of these two issues; this helps us to improve the house for all guests. With best regards, Dagmar

Home Away from Home!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent a wonderful week at this charming apartment! We were looking for a place that was located close to all the historical sites in and around Sintra, had good restaurants and food shops, and would also provide a roomy home base. where four adults and a 3 1/2 year old could plan daily activities and relax at the end of the day. We couldn't have found a more perfect spot!

The apartment was bright (high ceilings and lots of windows), offered numerous lounging areas and eating spots from informal to formal, extremely well equipped gourmet style kitchen, very clean, and well maintained. Sipping coffee on the terrace in the early morning sunlight was an added bonus. With its own entrance, it was also very private.

Booking this holiday rental was easy as the owner (Dagmar) was a real gem to work with. The whole experience was first class and one that we hope to repeat again in the future!

The cultural landscape of Sintra, which developed in the 19th century into the centre of European romantic architecture, is listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 1995. Besides the fairytale castle 'Palacio da Pena', which is one of the main romantic ensembles in Europe and was built by King Fernando II (Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha), the National Palace and the Moorish castle are worth a visit. There are several gardens and parks with the lush vegetation that is so typical for Sintra - and unique in the World. Due to its location, Sintra allows you to combine culturally stimulating holidays with peaceful village life, beach holidays, golf, surf or hiking.

Other Activities: Photographic excursions guided by professional photographer

Golf: Sintra is proud to have some of the best golf courses in Portugal. Set against amazing landscapes, there are several courses in easy reach: Estoril (18 & 9 hole courses), Quinta da Beloura (18 holes), Penha Longa (18 / 9); Quinta de Marinha (18 holes). Due to Sintra's mild micro-climate, golf can be played all year round.

From the website goingforgolf.com: 'The Lisbon Golf Coast has no fewer than 19 full courses laid out to the south of the city across the River Tagus (Costa Azul), to the west (Estoril Coast) and to the north-west (Silver Coast). The vast majority of layouts are within a 45-minute radius of Lisbon airport and overlook, or are close to, the wonderful coastline this area boasts.'
