We have lived in the Old Town/Lincoln Park/downtown area for 18 years. The apartment you'll be renting is a garden apartment in our single-family home.
We went through the Licensing process and have our License number #236988 for VRBO rental units in Chicago.
It has gorgeous hardwood floors, a new kitchen with granite countertops, a remodeled bathroom, and a gorgeous picture window that floors the living room with light.
We live upstairs, so we'll be there to help with restaurant recommendations, directions and advice on seeing the sights.
Think of us as your personal tour guide and concierge service!
Jamie purchased this apartment in 2002
Ten years ago we were driving through the neighborhood when we spotted the home of our dreams. We are urbanites at heart, but we wanted a single-family home that offered the charm of old Chicago but was close the beating heart of the city. This place had it all!
You can walk to everything. Every morning we hop on our bikes and rides through the zoo to Lake Michigan and up the shoreline to our office in the Loop.
In the mornings you can grab coffee at the corner Starbucks or walk through historic Old Town to one of the three bakeries nearby.
If you're traveling on business, you can be at your downtown meeting within five to 10 minutes by cab or 15 to 20 minutes by 'L'.
In short, if you're looking for a cozy apartment that is 30 to 50 percent less expensive than a hotel and allows you to live like one of the natives, this is it!
The apartment is very large, comfortable and quiet. We loved that we were close to restaurants and bars but never heard a thing once we were inside the apartment. While we didn't have time to do it on this stay, we also loved that it would be very easy to walk downtown. With a niece in college close by, we'll be back!
Everything was perfect! Location and parking was amazing! Plenty big enough and had everything we needed- even bicycles to ride up and down lake shore drive, which was so close and convenient. Stopped at the zoo on the way. Would definitely stay here again!
This living room of this unit is simply a delightful place to hang out. We loved sinking into the leather sofa and cushiony lounge chairs to relax after busy days of sightseeing. Though this is a basement unit, it has ample light and pretty views into a neighboring yard/garden. As previous reviews mention, the built-in bookcases hold a great collection of books that are quite fun to browse. The bathroom and kitchen are nicely updated and sparklingly clean. The bed was comfortable, the location great, and the photos accurately reflect the place. We had no problems communicating with the owner. I have no hesitations about recommending this to anyone who wants a comfortable, nicely furnished "home-like" place to stay while visiting Chicago.
Fortunately, the owner was able to contact us on the day of arrival with a change in the keypad entry code! We arrived by taxi from Union Station, so did not take advantage of the garage, but would certainly recommend it to others; street parking was really tight. The house has "curb appeal," and we were immediately pleased with our choice of rental for a week in Chicago.
The location is absolutely fantastic. A short walk to Lincoln Park, a slightly longer walk to the "el" and access to all Chicago has to offer. As for the apartment itself, it's small, but the open floor plan makes it feel relatively spacious. Furnishings were attractive, kitchen well-equipped, plenty of hot water. Immaculately clean. Wi-Fi worked well. Owner responsive. CVS and restaurants are just steps away. We have already agreed that, if we return to Chicago, we will try to rent here again. We routinely stay in HomeAway/VRBO properties, and this is definitely one of our favorites.
Neighborhood seems extremely safe. One of us is a "lark" and slipped out early for walks in the park, seeing only joggers and bicyclists. There was some late-night noise from celebratory patrons of the pubs across the street, but no quarreling or threatening behavior. We weren't accosted by a panhandler until we were back at the train station for the trip home (which was a surprise, as our experience has been otherwise in most cities we visit).
The only bad thing about our stay: It was too short! We hated to leave at the end of the week, and spent part of the trip home talking about what we wanted to do on our next visit.
Things to be aware of, if you have special needs: this is a garden apartment, about 4 steps down from street level, and the kitchen is at a slightly higher level than the living room on one side and the bedroom on the other, so not a good choice for someone with mobility issues. Really light sleepers may be disturbed by the sound of footsteps from overhead. There's not a separate thermostat for the apartment, though there's a window air conditioner in the bedroom, with fans/heaters supplied. (We were comfortable, even through a heat advisory in July, so from our experience this wasn't a problem.)
We spent 11 fabulous nights in an apartment that was exactly what we were looking for....IE. self-catering accommodation for 2 persons outside of the main center (not in the Loop) with easy access to the CTA train lines and buses. Situated a 10 minute walk from Sedgwick brown line station, a 15 minute stroll from Lincoln Park Zoo plus 5 minutes walk from the shops and restaurants of the 'Old Town' this was an ideal location for us.
The apartment had everything that we needed for a comfortable our stay....... including a very comfortable double bed and extremely well equipped kitchen.
We did not find time to explore much in the small garden area.....but that was through choice.
The apartment was very clean and well-maintained.
As UK visitors, we did not know any of the Chicago neighborhoods beforehand and I am very happy that we chose the Lincoln Park area and this apartment for our first holiday in Chicago and I would definitely stay here again.
If you are planning to take in many of the Chicago visitor attractions during an extended visit, like ourselves.... I can recommend the 5 day "Go Chicago' pass and the CTA Ventra card 7 day travel pass as extremely good value. We saved several hundred dollars in entrance fees and train and bus tickets....plus we were able to use the 'fast pass' queues to avoid long delays at the most popular attractions.
The apartment is convenient walking distance to Lincoln Park and bus/train services into the city of Chicago. There is plenty of wardrobe storage for clothes and cases. The availability to use bicycles to ride around is a nice touch. Chicago is a great city with plenty to do and see and we were spoils with beautiful weather during our stay. We won't hesitate to book this apartment again should we return.
Lincoln Park and Old Town;
Gorgeous, leafy streets, beautiful victorian homes, and the world-famous Lincoln Park zoo and North Avenue beachfront are all within strolling distance.
For the business traveler, the Loop and conference hotels are a 5-minute cab ride, 10-minute commute on the 'L' or half-hour to 45-minute walk.
The famed Second City Comedy Club is three blocks away. The country's most famous rib restaurant— Twin Anchors — is down the block.
For shoppers, Chicago's Magnificent Mile is a bike ride away (and we'll give you the bike for free!)
