About the property

Gorgeous designer cabin, indoor & outdoor wood fireplaces, wrap-around porch

LAYER CAKE cabin is within walking distance to the Grand Canyon of the east coast, crown jewel of the public lands in this area. This gorgeous, quiet and unforgettable cabin built with wormy chestnut timbers is a sweet dream retreat with what our guests call “amazing attention to detail at every turn.” Layer Cake accommodates up to 4 guests comfortably.

UPSTAIRS BEDROOM: Those sleeping in the upper master feel it's like sleeping in a beautiful tree house with it’s forest views, A-frame window, large crank windows, mini-balcony, reading lamps, new mattress, tv, and private rooms for commode and vanity sink.

MAIN FLOOR BEDROOM: Guests sleeping downstairs enjoy it's romantic warmth as it is surrounded by rhododendron forest and enjoys a 2-sided wood-burning rock fireplace, 9-foot down sofa and reading lamps and has access to a full bath with gorgeous rock shower with a view of the forest.

STONE PATIO: On the patio, guests rave about evenings spent in our ergonomic Timberlake rocking chairs in front of the exterior rock fireplace - enjoying the stars, the sound of the wind in the trees, a glass of wine, alone or someone special.

MAINI SITTING AREA: This vaulted ceiling area w/A-framE window features a wood-burning double-sided fireplace flanked by perfectly placed very comfortable club chairs and ottoman (with reading lamps). A perfect place to enjoy your favorite glass of wine and intimate conversation, or a good read.

KITCHEN: The kitchen is equipped using care and quality that we ourselves would appreciate (as we too, enjoy our time at the cabin). The kitchen is well-thought-out and features stone countertops, a range, refrigerator/freezer with ice maker, stainless preparation table/bar and barstools, a very large, deep stainless sink, dishwasher, disposal (switch is under the sink), drip coffee maker, coffee bean grinder, microwave oven and a toaster.

DINING NOOK: The dining area boasts an upholstered corner booth with 100+ year old burly maple cross-cut table (created by a local artisan), and light by a lodge-inspired chandelier. Wonderful for working (if you absolutely must), enjoying a puzzle, playing board games or cards, or just dining.

WRAP-AROUND COVERED PORTCH: The exterior features a metal roof (wonderful when it rains), and a wrap-around covered porch with Timberlake deck chairs (perfect for enjoying morning coffee, watching the sun rise up over the trees as the birds enjoy their breakfast), as well as a gorgeous custom slate patio with comfy Timberlake rockers and another wood-burning fireplace.

SWIMMING POOL/TENNIS COURT: There’s even a beautiful swimming pool hidden in the community that guests of Layer Cake may use during summer months. It’s a 10-minute walk along gravel road, or a 3-minute drive. There is also a grill and picnic tables at this site.

LOCAL ADVENTURES: Hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, fishing, gem mining, horse back riding, antiquing, etc. - A binder containing information on local adventures and dining is available for your use while at the cabin.

About Becky and Dave Roletter

Our family LOVES spending time at Layer Cake! We enjoy sharing this experience and the glowing reviews (over 75 now with nothing less than 5-Star since we've begun renting it to guests). make it that much more wonderful to share!

We owe much of our positive experience to our wonderful guests, and to the efforts of the fabulous group that meticulously services our cabin (as we reside 2 hours east in Winston-Salem).

We LOVE to travel and sail, and also consider home swapping an option.

Why Becky and Dave Roletter chose Newland

Once you've been to Layer Cake cabin, you'll understand....

What makes this cabin unique

I never get enough of being at Layer Cake. I don't know what I like best. Is it:

When I open my eyes in the morning, I feel fortunate to awaken in a bed surrounded by views of the woodlands, hearing only the sounds of nature...the breeze flowing through the surrounding tall trees and the birds singing.

It's a place to disconnect from everyday stresses, and reconnect with friends, lovers, family...and best of all, yourself.

On a star-filled evening, sitting under the stars on the slate patio in front of the slate outdoor fireplace watching a roaring fire, sipping my favorite wine (Penfold's Bin 389) with special people (or even alone)?

Waking up early just to walk 5 minutes to the overlook to see the heavenly sunrise?

Reclining in the hammock chair on the wrap-around porch either napping or reading a book?

Reclining on the new 9-foot down-filled sofa in a beautiful room with a great book while surrounded by windows that look out on the woodlands?

Enjoying a wood fire in the indoor double-sided wood fireplace in a comfy club chair and with my ottoman, my mini-tray table attached to the arm of the chair with a hot cup of tea, and a good book, or just great conversation with the one directly across from me in the matching club chair?

Then there's the decadence of watching the sun setting from the slate and glass shower....

Listening to rain on the metal roof...

or sitting on the covered porch with a hot cup of tea watching it rain....

And that's at the cabin... the walking along tgravel and paved roads, the 5-minute walk to the overlook on Table Rock road, the hike to Sitting Bear, Upper Creek Falls, Table Rock, antiquing in Foscoe, kayaking Price Lake, and one of my all-time favorites - the Orchard at Altapass on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Spruce Pine for live Appalachian music, flat footing, locals, homemade cobbler, warm local folks and tourists. And every time I go back, I found something else to love. I hate to leave and wish I could retire!!!

Soothing, relaxing, perfect location for area

  • 5 of 5

We loved this amazing retreat! It is a very comfortable, well supplied, clean and cared for home located perfectly to access all the nearby attractions like Grandfather Mountain, Boone, Linville Caverns and some fantastic hiking trails as well. The property is tucked down a quiet drive with a secluded feel and has a wrap around deck leading to a relaxing fireplace and BBQ area underneath a tree- lined canopy that invites easy reflection of fun-filled days. The inside is cozy and relaxing with space to bond with others as well as places to retreat for quiet moments. The open floor plan allows kitchen duty to be a part of the group and the broad windows invite the character of the woods inside. Additionally, the owners are friendly and helpful and definitely ensure an enjoyable experience. We will definitely be repeat visitors!

Classy cabin for romantic get away

  • 5 of 5

Layer Cake was the perfect choice for a weekend get away. It was very cozy and had all the amenities needed. The attention to detail from the furnishings to the construction was apparent of proud owners. No detail was overlooked. The outdoor fireplace with stone patio was the perfect way to relax and enjoy the fresh mountain air. The owner was quick to respond to questions prior to our arrival and was very accommodating with us during our stay. I highly recommend this property. I will definitely rent it again. *****

Layer Cake is located in the Woodlands, just off Table Rock Road in Jonas Ridge. This quiet cabin is surrounded by huge rhododendron and forest on a gravel road off Table Rock Road (from I-181). Near the "Grand Canyon of the East!" hiking (Grandfather Mountain, Table Rock trails, Sitting Bear and too many others to list), antiquing (Foscoe is a must), beer tasting at Blind Squirrel Brewery (Plumtree, NC), Wine tasting at Grandfather Vineyards (Foscoe), dining at Eat Crow (Foscoe), lunch at Christa's (daily-made yeast rolls in Pinola), (daily-made enormous cinnamon buns and sourdough loaves (check hours - Linville Mercantile and Bakery (Newland), biking (route I-181), driving the Blue Ridge Parkway to places such as Linn Cove Viaduct, Price Lake (wonderful walking trail, canoe/kayak/fishing lake with rentals available), and Moses Cone Arts Center with history, high-end crafts, and hiking trails), and one of my personal favorites May-October -- the Orchard at Altapass (near Spruce Pine) for friendly locals and tourists, live music, dancing, ice cream and apple pie. The cabin is also approximately 30 minutes from Boone and Blowing Rock (outlet shopping), and perfect for App State visits.

During summer months, Gingercake pool and tennis court (with picnic tables and grill) is hidden in the woods, just a 10-minute walk down the gravel road from the cabin (3-minute drive).
