Koo Yuen purchased this house in 2012
Unique Historic Home built in the 1800's for Chinese Association. Very Downtown and Chinatown. Yet the living environment makes one feels in a Grand Manson setting with the amenities that are common only in the luxurious lodging places
DC Gallery Place and all the Great entertainment and Great Eats are steps away from this Grand Home. Private Parking On-Site.
My family of 6 stayed at this location for a week and really enjoyed ourselves. The house is very spacious and was close to everything. Two blocks away is the subway that takes you anywhere in DC. Plenty of restaurants nearby as well. The house had a great charm and was a joy to stay in.
Overall the house is a fine place to stay in DC for a large family or group. It looks like it was gutted and rebuilt not too long ago to make it a large residence with the bedrooms and bathrooms. The bathrooms were custom finished more nicely than those at home; they made use of the space they had well. The kitchen cabinets are high-end, and has all appliances/etc that you need. It was fun to ponder what the original floorplan would have been 50+ years ago when it was likely an office or small shop.
However, note that the following should be updated in the description:
- NO PARKING. There is no parking due to construction next door that is slated to last through end of 2016. You will NOT be able to park a car at the house in 2016; your best bet for parking is to go 2 blocks north and park in the Safeway parking deck for long-term parking.
- SLEEPS 17, not 19: the house only sleeps 17 people. The second pull-out sofa in the living room area was replaced with a 2 person recliner, which is not a bed. So unless you like sleeping in a recliner, you can only sleep 17 people on beds. If you bring over 17 people, they're sleeping in the recliner or on the floor! Luckily we had right at 17 people but if we had more I wouldn't have wanted to be the one to draw the short straw.
Note also that this house near alot of action; just a short walk away to all the excitement of Chinatown and Verizon center area. Its safe, at no time did I feel unsafe walking around, but in general with any area with alot of people just keep your wits about you, and you'll see some strange characters.
This is our second time renting this townhouse, the first time we were in the lower 3 bedroom unit. It's a great historic home with lots of character. We were originally a group of 8, but two had to back out at the last minute and with six bedrooms and four bathrooms, six women had a very comfortable stay. We were able to walk to a local grocery store, drug store and restaurants. Jim, the property manager was very accommodating and allowed us to drop off our luggage early while the unit was still being cleaned. We intend to rent again next year, it was perfect for us!
We had two families of four each, originally intending to have 3 families of four. There was an abundance of space for eight people. They were very accommodating for our early arrival in D.C. We used the metro a lot, the station was very close. The area is full of fabulous restaurants and conveniently close to Walgreens and a Safeway. The house was nicely furnished with plenty of extra linens, pillows, dishes, etc. The full size washer and dryer was very efficient and great to have on hand when traveling with children. It was also great to have WiFi for uploading pictures at the end of the day. The house was two stories without a landing, so it may be difficult for people with trouble climbing stairs.
First of all, I would like to commend Tina, the booking agent, and Jim, the property manager, for being extremely accommodating and responsive. Both responded to my e-mail requests within a few hours and Jim responded to text messages throughout our stay. Our party consisted of 3 adults and 4 children ages 12-15. The home is historic with much character, high ceilings, and updated bathrooms. The living and dining areas in the home are very spacious and comfortable (including the sofa bed). The kitchen is clean and has all of the basics including dishes, flatware, cooking utensils, toaster, microwave, etc. Towels, sheets, pillows, and blankets are provided. All of the bedrooms are spacious except the one with the twin bed and the beds were comfortable. The rooms toward the front of the house could hear street noise; however the other rooms were quiet especially the ones with no windows. The house is secure with cameras at the front and back doors and 2 sets of locked doors to the front entry. The parking space accessed through an alley behind the home was convenient but scary at night. We had a few very minor issues – one of the bathroom doors was off the hinges, we couldn't turn on the ceiling fan, and trouble connecting to the internet. None of these impacted our stay.
The children in our group were frightened in the neighborhood at first but they were not accustomed to city living. By the second day, everyone was comfortable staying in Chinatown. We sat on the front stoop during the day and at night for fresh air. The basement apartment was rented by a young couple. There is a Chinese restaurant next door. We walked everywhere as the location is perfect – close to all attractions. We took the Metro to the Pentagon and Arlington Cemetery. There are Metro stations very close by – the closest within 1 block. Restaurants at Gallery Place (within a block) were great and kid-friendly. I highly recommend Clyde’s. There is also a movie theater and bowling alley at Gallery Place, but be advised that the bowling alley does not allow anyone under 21 after 8 pm.
I would recommend this home to groups with teens and adults who are experienced at city traveling. This is not a hotel; therefore there are no concierge, room service, or onsite stores/restaurants. You will need to venture out and figure it out.
We were in DC to install some Christmas lighting at the new City Center complex. We were two blocks from work, a few blocks from Safeway and a short walk to any of the sights. We brought our bicycles with us, but with the abundant rental stations around, you can get around quite easily. The house is well equipped with dishes and linens. Plenty of room for 6 adult men, with room to spare. Having a parking space was a big bonus to us, since we drove one vehicle up for work.
