Stratford native, born and raised. I decided to share my family's camp on the weeks we don't use it.
Jamie purchased this cottage in 1965
Our camp has been lovingly cared for and updated throughout the years and affords wonderful privacy while only minutes from a local convenience store, bar, firewood, hiking trails, and several other lakes
Pleasant lake is a private lake that only residents of the lake and their guests can enjoy. That means no crowds, traffic, or hassle. Just bring your food, drink, and swimsuits and you are on vacation.
The owner greeted us when we arrived, even though we were 40 minutes late, and gave us a quick tour. Our three older teens shared the upstairs loft which has three separate beds. We stayed in the downstairs bedroom, which has a queen size bed. There is only one bathroom in the house inside the downstairs bedroom. Unfortunately there is no door, so privacy can be an issue, but we just made a rule that if the bedroom door was closed, it should be assumed the bathroom was in use. There is an outdoor bathroom in a shed if needed. Craig has a great spot on the lake with a nice long, wide dock to hang out on and listen to the loons, or jump into or fish in the very clean lake. There were two canoes, two kayaks, and a rowboat there for us, as well as a heavy duty tube. We especially enjoyed the kayaks, and even attached the tube so I could tow one of the girls around the lake in the kayak. The lake is beautiful and you can kayak the entire perimeter, which includes several secluded inlets in about 4 miles. There are also two small islands you can paddle out to in the middle of the lake. The house itself had two very comfy couches for rainy days and reading at night, and a love seat as well. Downstairs mattress was a little stiff for me and pillows weren't too supportive, so you may want to bring your own, but they do provide linens, which was nice. We also brought our dog. There was a mother and four ducks that would visit us morning and evening out by the dock. I also discovered a pair of loons who had just had a baby in one of the secluded bays on the lake. There are plenty of dishes and pots and pans, though we couldn't find a cutting board. Space is pretty tight in the kitchen, so we ended up having to keep most of our non-perishable items on the counter, as there really wasn't much storage space in the cabinets. The do have some things like olive oil, salt and pepper and some barbecue sauces left behind by other renters which came in handy at times. There is a fireplace outside and inside with plenty of firewood provided. There is also a covered gazebo area with table and nice lake view & a picnic table with metal roof. There is a restaurant with really good pizza and burgers, Pleasant Lake Inn, which is walkable. They only take cash but have an ATM. Canada Lake general store has groceries, boat rentals and supplies. Speculator is 40 mins away, Gloversville 30 mins, and Saratoga 70 mins by car. Hike Kane Mountain, cool fire tower.
The idea of a week with no phone or wifi was terrifying, but, as it turned out, we loved it! This small lake house is quiet, clean, private and peaceful. It's right on the lake, and includes a terrific wooden dock, an outdoor fireplace, a gazebo and picnic table, as well as kayaks and a canoe. The dog loved it, and the deck provided a sunny spot for drying off and watching loons. The house is an authentic 1960s camp, but with numerous updates, including the well-stocked kitchen and wood-paneled bathroom. As the other reviewers have pointed out, the bathroom adjoins the sole 1st floor bedroom without a door, so unless everyone is comfortable with one another, it could be awkward. There is a flush toilet in the tool shed, but just a bit far for nighttime.... Likewise the loft bedroom has no door, but that would be ideal for a family with kids. We had 4 adults and there was no noise issue whatsoever. The linens and towels were new and nice. Everything was provided, and the owner was friendly and accommodating. Thanks!
We will absolutely be back next summer. This place was perfect for our family. The dock is right there, kayaks, a row boat, clear water, swimming, amazing sunsets, fire pit, gas grill and sleeping accommodations were just perfect. The owner is great and gives you a great overview of what is in the area and an excellent tour of the cottage and surrounding area. The best part was NO CELL SERVICE. Perfect vacation and we can't wait to come back next year.
My fiance and our two dogs stayed here for 5 nights and we had an amazing time! The house is set back from the road and right on the water so you have plenty of peace and quiet. There is a long dock which gets a lot of sun, and a patio that was just built that makes for a beautiful spot to sit and look out across the lake. And at night there is a fireplace down by the shore to have a fire and roast marshmallows. Two kayaks and two canoes were provided, as well as all the firewood you could ever need. Inside the house there is an eat-in kitchen, a living room with a wood burning fireplace, and a master bedroom with full bath. Upstairs there are three beds but no dividing walls so best for people who don't mind sharing the same space. The only thing that was tricky for us was the bathroom because it is in the master bedroom and also doesn't have a door. There is a flush toilet outside in the shed but it's pretty rustic and not suited for people who are squeamish about critters and bugs. So when we had guests stay for the night we just had to be strategic about everyone's bathroom routines.
I would highly recommend this house to anyone who wants to go off the grid and get away from it all. There is no cell service and no internet, and the TV has two channels, so you are truly off the grid here! The closest towns are a fair drive away but if you bring all the essentials you will be cozy and happy staying right on the lake everyday.
The owner is very accommodating and is a phone call away if you need anything. Great little vacation spot!
We had a fantastic weekend at this lake house. Owner was extremely accomodating, and the water, dock and firepit were exactly what we were looking for in a relaxing get away. Thanks!
We stayed for a week at this cottage with our 3 girls, ages 7, 5, and 2 and had the most wonderful time! It was quiet, beautiful, and very peaceful! We fished off the dock every day, had fires at night in the stone firepit, went out for rides in the row boat and canoes, took little adventures around the small town, went on hikes (the one to Nine Cornered Lake is a must!), and went swimming off the dock. We took a day trip up to the Enchanted Forest Water Safari in Old Forge too which was about an hour and a half away. It was great to be away from it all and reconnect as a family again! No technology to distract, just good wholesome fun! The owner, Craig, is a very sweet and caring man! He met us there and showed us around. He got my 3 girls crayons and coloring books, all the stuff to make S'mores and even had gotten a bottle of kids shampoo for them too! He was so accommodating! We had everything we needed there and more! All the pots and pans, dishes, silverware, paper products, microwave, you name it! He even left us condiments in the fridge and bottled water! We overpacked that's for sure! We will definitely be going back and can't wait! The cottage was quaint and perfect for our needs! It has been family owned since 1961 and you could really feel the love and memories in the place and were so happy to make a lot of our own! Best family vacation yet! Thank you so much for everything, Craig! You are a sweetheart!
